After thorough testing and now that all the issues I noticed are fixed, I feel that the new GUI is ready for prime time.

Purpose
This PR merges the
releases/ssg-standalone-componentsbranch into develop. The branch contains the content of the #500 PR.PRs with modifications will be created. Before it is complete it should not be merged. For previous discussions see #500.
Replaces #509 after name change of branch.
