# Silence

**Silence** is a term used to describe the punishment of limiting a user's means of communication within the osu! community. Silences can be placed by members of the [Global Moderation Team](/wiki/People/Global_Moderation_Team) and [Nomination Assessment Team](/wiki/People/Nomination_Assessment_Team), and are only placed on users that have broken the [Community Rules](/wiki/Rules).

Members of the [Global Moderation Team](/wiki/People/Global_Moderation_Team) and [Nomination Assessment Team](/wiki/People/Nomination_Assessment_Team) typically issue these silences to maintain a clean environment for the website and in-game.

In addition to that, all messages of a silenced user are removed from all chat channels and private conversations.[^chat-cleanup]
Once a silence is issued to a user, all of their messages in chat are removed and an alert will be displayed in the place of the chat input field containing the duration of the active silence.

After a user is silenced, an alert will be displayed in place of the chat input field, saying when the silence wears off. The silence record can also be observed at the bottom of the profile on the website, from which it will disappear after 28 days.
## Durations

## Appealing a silence
The duration of a silence starts at 5 minutes and doubles for each subsequent offence, up to a maximum of 28 days, but the initial duration may vary depending on the offence committed and the user's previous history. The factors considered when determining the length of a silence include:

## Common reasons for silences

*Caution: Engaging in "inappropriate behaviour" in private messages is not against the rules, unless said inappropriate behaviour is being delivered to unwilling or unconsenting recipients. If reported, appropriate punishments will be placed.*
Here are some common reasons why users get silenced in public chat, but not limited to:

- **Spamming or Flooding:** Self-explanatory.
- **Caps Abuse:** Chatting with all uppercase letters.
- **Inappropriate Behavior/Conversation:** The public chat is not a place for such discussions.
- **Racism:** Discrimination or hatred based on race, religion, gender or sexual orientation.
- **Advertising:** Promoting products or services. This includes Discord invite links and streaming links such as Twitch and YouTube.

Silences may also be given to users for other reasons such as but not limited to:

- Inappropriate behaviour in public chats or forums (e.g. `#multiplayer`, beatmap discussions, comments, etc.), including — but not limited to — spamming, nonsense chat, racism, etc.
- Uploading or posting inappropriate content via other means (e.g. profile avatars, beatmap submissions, profile details, user page bio, banner, etc.).
- **Inappropriate Beatmap Submission:** Details such as metadata, tags and background image.
- **Inappropriate Conduct:** Places such as the forums, beatmap discussions and comments.
- **Inappropriate Profile:** Contents such as avatar, cover and profile details.

The length of a silence may vary based on the severity of the infringement. Silences can stack on top of each other, adding more time for each one. Please note that if an offence is heavy enough, or if a player is a repeat offender, it may result in an [account restriction](/wiki/Help_centre/Account_restrictions) instead of a silence.
