My ideas for an electric car project. This may already be in progress: http://www.rahtmobile.com/
Rather than use conventional accelerator and brake pedals, control similar to a bicycle, and allow the driver/passengers to put energy into the system. Torque from motor proportional to torque on pedals, and pedal load increases with motor load. Backpedal to stop.
Driver could exert the same amount of effort required to bike at e.g., 14 mph, but would be able to travel 65 mph.

Add a diesel or natural gas genset module that plugs right into the trunk or something. Exhaust would be pointed out at the right location. Controls inside the car and available remotely. Could automatically charge when parked in a remote location.
