Randi Markussen and Christopher Gad authored an article that takes a closer look on the democratic consequences of internet elections. The norwegian population reacted positively on the internet voting trials in 2011, but while it might seem a natural step, with the current technological achievements taken into account, the underlying problems is often neglected. Being an IT-system, online elections can be compared to modern banking where the damage, should a hacker succeed in ripping an account, is relatively small. But if an election result is wrong or even manipulated it could result in severe mistrust and the damage will probably be irreversible. Similarly voters can be coerced since no election authority is present to protect the voters.

In conclusion we should not expect that successful technologies from one area works just as well in another. Electronic elections needs to work the first time they are tried. Hence a long-term and patient strategy must be the most effective.
