Adds the specification for the viewport fidelity indicator — a per-viewport indicator and
detail view telling the user when the displayed image is not a faithful rendering of the stored
pixel data, why, and whether it will improve.
Documentation only. No code changes.
Funded scope: OHIF / FU Berlin Set-Aside, task T6 (Aim 2.3, required), with the
Cornerstone3D viewport fidelity state it consumes (T3).
A state machine over lossiness through time, not a severity scale. Yellow = lossy now,
expected to improve. Red = lossy now, and this is as good as it gets. Green = was lossy, is not
any more, shown for ~1s then withdrawn. No indicator at all for a viewport that has never
been lossy — its presence is itself information. A viewport with no data displayed is neither
lossy nor lossless.
The premise, stated as requirements in §4.1 VF-AUTO: the system decides what to render, not
the user. The previous decimated-views approach failed by making users dictate the settings
needed to view things quickly. An indicator is what makes automatic decision-making acceptable
rather than opaque — which is also why it is read-only.
Specification convention
This spec is the first to use a two-section split: §4 user requirements and §5
implementation requirements. The distinction is load-bearing — §5 may change freely as better
approaches emerge, while §4 changes only if a requirement was described wrongly or the intended
user-facing behaviour is itself changing, never because it proved inconvenient to implement.
Proposed as the preferred convention for this register generally. Existing specs are not
retrofitted here.
Not yet done
The specs/ register tree is not on master, so the VF prefix row and the specs/index.md
conventions edit are both pending, to be applied on whichever branch carries specs/. The
companion design.md follows once the spec lands there.
Added draft specifications for a per-viewport indicator showing when displayed images have reduced fidelity.
Defined indicator states for temporary, final, and recently recovered fidelity loss, and when no indicator is shown.
Described the read-only detail view, fidelity state changes, and requirements for progressive loading, reduced resolution, decimation, and coarser sampling.
Added guidance on behavioral specification structure, requirement identifiers, and authoring conventions.
Specification for the OHIF per-viewport fidelity indicator (T6), plus the
Cornerstone3D viewport fidelity state it consumes (T3).
Split into user requirements (VF-INFO, VF-VIS, VF-DET, VF-CFG, VF-LANG) and
implementation requirements (VF-STATE, VF-VOCAB, VF-REG, VF-UX, VF-CS3D,
VF-DOC), so that the implementation half can change freely while the
user-facing guarantees change only when described wrongly.
Includes draft issue bodies for the design feature request and the two
implementation issues.

The system decides what to render, not the user. Adds VF-AUTO as the first
user requirement group in the viewport fidelity specification, ahead of the
information requirements, because it is the premise the rest depends on
rather than a design preference.
The previous decimated-views approach failed by requiring users to dictate
the settings needed to view things quickly. An indicator is what makes
automatic decision-making acceptable rather than opaque: the system decides
continuously and discloses when a decision cost the user something. This is
also the substantive reason the indicator is read-only, beyond keeping
excluded scope out of a funded gate.

The description covers the required sections. The Summary explains the viewport fidelity indicator and states that the PR is documentation only. The file table lists the four new spec files. Define non-pointer activation for the detail and recovery states.
This request makes the detail view click-based and makes the recovered state hover-based. The requirements use activation and require the state to remain re-revealable, but these instructions do not define keyboard focus, keyboard activation, or touch behavior. Add an equivalent non-pointer path and test it; otherwise some users cannot complete VF-DET-1 or VF-VIS-1d.

Define the T3/T6 state and event contract before implementation.
VF-VIS-5 allows multiple simultaneous fidelity differences, but this contract lists singular dimension, cause, magnitude, and status fields. It also does not define current image/display-set identity or event ordering. Specify whether the state is a collection, name one event contract, and define its payload, identity, revision, and compatibility rules. Without this contract, OHIF cannot reliably render every affected dimension or ignore stale events after scrolling and display-set changes.

Define standing before mapping it to terminally lossy.
The requirements define terminally lossy as not expected to improve for the current data, viewport, and device. This file only defines standing, while the requirements map standing directly to terminally lossy. If standing only means persistent at the current time, OHIF can show red while a later load or interaction can still improve the rendering. Define the invariant and the transient-to-standing transition.

Define the mapping from T3 state to the OHIF reason registry.
T3 supplies separate dimension, cause, magnitude, and transient/standing state. This issue requires OHIF reason keys with typed translation arguments, but it does not define whether T3 emits a stable reason key or OHIF maps (dimension, cause) to one. Define that boundary and the generic fallback for unknown values. Without it, extensions can register keys that no event can select, and new T3 reasons can be mislabelled or dropped.

Scope VF-VIS-1 to enabled deployments.
VF-VIS-1 requires an indicator whenever a fidelity difference exists. VF-CFG-1 permits a deployment to remove that indicator. A deployment that enables removal cannot satisfy both requirements. State that VF-VIS-1 applies when the indicator is enabled, and make the removal warning the explicit exception.

Add VF-VIS-5a: a viewport that shows more than one display set shows
the state of the worst display set. A terminally lossy display set wins,
also while another display set still loads, and the detail view says
that other data still loads. Consistent with FIDELITY-STATE-12 in the
Cornerstone3D viewport fidelity spec.

Define the cross-display-set aggregation contract.
VF-VIS-4a applies within one display set. VF-VIS-5a applies across display sets, so it does not need to be an exception to VF-VIS-4a. The linked OHIF and Cornerstone3D issue bodies define the current-image state but do not define how a viewport combines states from multiple display sets.
Add the aggregation contract to both issue bodies:
-Report the state of the image **currently displayed**, not the worst across the display set- (`VF-VIS-4a`).+For each display set, report the state of the image **currently displayed** (`VF-VIS-4a`).+If a viewport shows more than one display set, apply the defined state precedence across+those per-display-set states and report the worst display set (`VF-VIS-5a`). Do not select+the worst image within one display set.
Keep the source of loading information as a separate contract.

Align the stability rule with the two-section model.
