What this pull request does

This pull request lets a reviewer see the Cornerstone3D multi-resolution volume work in
OHIF. The Netlify deploy preview builds OHIF against the Cornerstone3D branch. A volume
viewport can then reduce its texture to fit the GPU of the device.

Cornerstone3D calls this reduction "final downsampling". Final downsampling is lossy, so
OHIF turns it on in the app config:

  • config/default.js keeps final downsampling off. A viewport there uploads the
full-resolution texture, as before this work. Two other changes reach every config, also
    config/default.js:
    • The MPR load order changes. The coarse stages load first.
    • The Cornerstone3D label "Transient Low Fidelity" shows in red while an MPR volume loads.
  • Every other app config turns final downsampling on, with
lossyDownsampling: { final: true }. These configs include config/e2e.js for the
automated tests and config/netlify.js for the deploy preview.
  • The customization cornerstone.gpuSettingsPreset selects a GPU settings preset. A
preset in the customization also turns final downsampling on in config/default.js.

A GPU settings preset is a named set of GPU settings: the largest texture edge and the
texture memory. With final downsampling on and no customization, the default preset of
Cornerstone3D applies. On the branch of
cornerstonejs/cornerstone3D#2931, that default is high.

An automatic mode, which computes the GPU settings for the device, is not part of this pull
request. The automatic mode turned out to be more complicated than expected, because a
browser does not report the GPU memory, and a texture that is too large can lose the WebGL
context. A later pull request will add the automatic mode.

The base Cornerstone3D pull request is
cornerstonejs/cornerstone3D#2931.

This pull request changes one type in platform/core: lossyDownsampling in
AppTypes.ts. The other changes are in the cornerstone extension, in the app configs, in
the CI scripts, in the public customization files, and in the documentation.

The design and the test notes

The Cornerstone3D links go to the docs preview of cornerstonejs/cornerstone3D#2931, and
that site draws the Mermaid diagrams. The link to the test notes goes to GitHub. This
pull request has no docs preview, and GitHub draws the diagram of the test notes.

How to test

The deploy preview

The deploy/netlify check builds the preview on each push:
https://deploy-preview-6295--ohif-dev.netlify.app.

The preview links the Cornerstone3D branch of the CS3D_REF line below,
feat/multires-voxel-manager-base
(cornerstonejs/cornerstone3D#2931). That branch now holds the whole set: the
multi-resolution work, the fidelity indicator of cornerstonejs/cornerstone3D#2992 (squash
3ea2420b9), and the acquisition-plane change of cornerstonejs/cornerstone3D#3018 (squash
e99bd737b). The description of cornerstonejs/cornerstone3D#2931 says how to review each part. The preview uses config/netlify.js, which turns final downsampling on and accepts ?customization=.
Thus a URL with no customization uses the default preset high, and a
?customization=gpu/<preset> URL overrides high.

The Playwright workflow no longer publishes a preview. Commit 57954ade9b removed that
preview, because the Netlify preview builds the same Cornerstone3D branch.

Quick start

The main test series is Body 0.5 CE, a CT series of 2464 images in the study
CT ANGIO ABD AND PEL WWO IV CONT. Before this work, a device with a texture limit of 2048
could not display that series. The author opened the series on the Netlify preview, and the
series displays well.

The large series in MPR, with no customization. The preview uses the default preset high:
a texture edge of 2048 and 32 GB of texture memory. Use a GPU with a large amount of memory,
or use the gpu/medium link below:

https://deploy-preview-6295--ohif-dev.netlify.app/viewer?StudyInstanceUIDs=1.3.6.1.4.1.14519.5.2.1.99.1071.24993177073256607564948872275593&hangingProtocolId=mpr

The same series with the customization gpu/medium. The preset states a texture edge of
2048 and 8 GB of texture memory. A laptop with an 8 GB GPU (NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060 Laptop
GPU) crashed under the preset high (32 GB), which is the Cornerstone3D default on
cornerstonejs/cornerstone3D#2931:

https://deploy-preview-6295--ohif-dev.netlify.app/viewer?StudyInstanceUIDs=1.3.6.1.4.1.14519.5.2.1.99.1071.24993177073256607564948872275593&hangingProtocolId=mpr&customization=gpu/medium

The same series with the customization gpu/low-tablet, which makes the reduction easy to
see:

https://deploy-preview-6295--ohif-dev.netlify.app/viewer?StudyInstanceUIDs=1.3.6.1.4.1.14519.5.2.1.99.1071.24993177073256607564948872275593&hangingProtocolId=mpr&customization=gpu/low-tablet

The same series with the customization gpu/high-texture-4096, which states a texture edge
of 4096. The 2464 images fit in one texture, so nothing reduces. This preset is a control
and not a real device: no device is tested to render a texture edge above 2048. Some devices
report a larger MAX_3D_TEXTURE_SIZE, but a reported size is not a reliable limit, so a
device can fail to allocate the texture. Use a desktop GPU with a large amount of memory:

https://deploy-preview-6295--ohif-dev.netlify.app/viewer?StudyInstanceUIDs=1.3.6.1.4.1.14519.5.2.1.99.1071.24993177073256607564948872275593&hangingProtocolId=mpr&customization=gpu/high-texture-4096

Compare the links. gpu/low-tablet reduces the most. gpu/medium reduces on one axis
only, because 2464 is more than 2048. gpu/high-texture-4096 reduces nothing.

To try a different preset, change the last part of the URL to customization=gpu/<preset>.
The presets are low-tablet, low, medium, high and high-texture-4096.

Fidelity Indicator

The fidelity indicator is currently the CS3D based indicator that is NOT intended for OHIF release, but is merely a warning indicator to prevent users of CS3D from accidentally assuming full quality images when being shown lower quality images.

The indicator is shown when the actual display resolution has enough voxel pixel information to not lose information.
For example, a 512x512x512 original volume downsampled to 256 x 512 x 128 shown in acquisition orientation at 256x256 has enough image pixels to provide information for all the display pixels. That is lossless as displayed.

The indicator has two states - transient lossy and final lossy. During load or interaction, the system may use lower display resolution and scale it up, or use lower pixel resolution. That will show the transient low fidelity indicator.

In specific, with the 2464 slice example below, the acquisition orientation use using box averaged 512x512x1232 data. Since every acquisition plane volume view for this no longer corresponds to the slice views, every acquisition plane view will be lossy. The stack view of this is NOT lossy because it doesn't use the volume reduced view. As well, the new planar viewport of acquisition views isn't lossy because it uses the same logic as stack views when the viewplane normal happens to be acquisition. Most views of sagittal or coronal orientation are NOT lossy for this data because they display at 512 x 1232 or less vertically, which according to the rule above has enough source voxel information to full specify the result.
This can be confusing to users, and will be addressed in the future. In the meantime the current display is correct for the lossy indicators.

Test links

Each link opens the MPR layout on the Netlify preview. Each row gives one GPU settings
preset. The 2464-image CT is Body 0.5 CE. The 535-image CT fits in a texture edge of
2048, so only the low presets reduce the 535-image CT.

GPU settings preset Texture edge Texture memory 2464-image CT Expected result, 2464-image CT 535-image CT Expected result, 535-image CT
none (high on the preview) 2048 32 GB Netlify A reduction on one axis only, as gpu/high. Use a GPU with a large amount of memory. Netlify No reduction.
gpu/low-tablet 256 1 GB Netlify A strong reduction on all three axes. The reformats refine while the series loads. Netlify A strong reduction on all three axes.
gpu/low 256 2 GB Netlify A strong reduction. The edge is the same as low-tablet, so the reduction is similar. Netlify A strong reduction, similar to low-tablet.
gpu/medium 2048 8 GB Netlify A reduction on one axis only, because 2464 is more than 2048. Netlify No reduction.
gpu/high 2048 32 GB Netlify A reduction on one axis only, as medium. Use this preset only on a GPU with a large amount of memory. Netlify No reduction.
gpu/high-texture-4096 (control) 4096 32 GB Netlify No reduction. A real device can fail to allocate the texture. That failure is the expected result. Netlify No reduction.

Test links for the new viewports

The parameter &useNextViewports=true draws each viewport through the generic viewports of
Cornerstone3D. With
cornerstonejs/cornerstone3D#2931 (the acquisition-plane work of cornerstonejs/cornerstone3D#3018),
the acquisition plane draws the original frames when the preset reduces the volume. Each
link opens the 2464-image CT in the MPR layout.

GPU settings preset Link Axial (the acquisition plane) Sagittal and coronal
gpu/low-tablet Netlify The original frames at 512 × 512. No lossy fidelity indicator after the frame loads. Until then the reduced texture shows, and the indicator shows lossy. A strong reduction, the same as the legacy viewports.
gpu/medium Netlify The original frames. No lossy fidelity indicator after the frame loads. A reduction on the slice axis only. Usually full fidelity at the display resolution.
gpu/high-texture-4096 (control) Netlify No reduction. The viewport keeps the volume path. No reduction.

Check these items on the new viewports:

  1. The axial view shows the acquired slice. Under gpu/medium, compare the axial view
with the axial view of the legacy link. The new view must show the detail of one
acquired slice, not the average of two slices.
  2. A rotation keeps the slice. Rotate the axial viewport to sagittal, then back to
axial. The slice, the pan and the zoom must stay the same.
  3. A slab or a MIP keeps the volume path. Set a slab thicker than one slice, or the MIP
blend mode, on the axial viewport. The view must show the slab, as on the legacy
    viewports.
  4. The crosshairs and the sync work. Move the crosshairs in each view. The other views
    must follow.
  5. A SEG stays aligned. Load the SEG series. The labelmap must stay aligned in each
view. The axial view keeps the original frames while the labelmap shows. Report the
    result.

The author checked item 1 and the orientation menu on the preview on 2026-11-03: the
orientation menu works, and the indicator shows lossless in the acquisition plane. Items 2 to
5 are not checked yet.

NextViewportAdapter.isInAcquisitionPlane() now uses utilities.isAcquisitionPlaneNormal of
Cornerstone3D, so the progress scroll bar of an axial MPR viewport on an axial CT shows the full
form, as on the legacy viewports. Fixes #6405.

A small tilt of the axial view, for example with the crosshairs rotation, shows the reduced
texture. The original frames show only when the tilt moves the plane by less than half a
slice across the volume.

What to check

  1. The large series opens. The 2464-image series displays in all three MPR views.
  2. A reformat holds no band and no black line. Watch the sagittal view and the coronal
view while the series loads. Each view must refine as the data arrives. A block of one
image that repeats down the view, or a black line across the view, is a defect. Report
the defect with the link and the preset.
  3. The measurements do not change. Draw a length and a rectangle ROI on the 2464-image
series under gpu/low-tablet and again under gpu/high-texture-4096. The length, the
area and the mean value must be the same, because a measurement reads the
    full-resolution voxels.
  4. A segmentation stays aligned. Open the same study in the basic viewer
    (Netlify),
then load the SEG series. The labelmap must stay aligned with the CT images.
  5. The preset changes the reduction. gpu/low-tablet shows a strong reduction,
gpu/medium reduces less, and gpu/high-texture-4096 reduces nothing for a series of up
    to 4096 images.
  6. The viewport draws the expected grid. The section
    See the reduction
of the test notes gives a console check and the expected grid for each preset. The
?debug=true stats overlay does not show the reduction.
  7. config/default.js does not reduce. Run OHIF locally with
APP_CONFIG=config/default.js and no customization. A viewport must upload the
full-resolution texture, as before this work, so the 2464-image series can fail on a
device with an edge of 2048. Then add ?customization=gpu/medium. The reduction of
    gpu/medium must show.

Known limits

These two limits are not defects:

  • The resolution of a viewport does not change while a volume loads. The values refine,
so a reformat gets sharper, but the grid does not get finer.
  • A named preset does not probe the device. The automatic mode of a later pull request will
select the GPU settings for the device.

This limit is a defect, with an open issue:

These limits are known, and a later pull request addresses each one:

  • Only the mpr protocol uses the coarse stages. The other protocols with an
    imageLoadStrategy (fourUp, main3D, mprAnd3DVolumeViewport, only3D, primary3D,
primaryAxial, and tmtv) still show gray lines while a volume loads.
  • The Cornerstone3D fidelity indicator (fi-root, z-index 1000) can cover the OHIF menus
on a reduced volume. The OHIF fidelity indicator pull request will address this.
  • No automatic test covers the new viewports or the reduction. See Tests for the new viewports (useNextViewports) and the multi-resolution volumes #6404.

Local test

Testing the Multi-Resolution Volume Work
gives the pnpm commands that link the Cornerstone3D branch into a local OHIF.

Changes

GPU settings preset and lossy downsampling.

  • appConfig.lossyDownsampling goes to the rendering.lossyDownsampling option of the
Cornerstone3D init. The option has three flags: final, interactive and
interleavedLoading. The Cornerstone3D defaults are final: false,
    interactive: true and interleavedLoading: true.
  • Every app config except config/default.js sets lossyDownsampling: { final: true }.
config/default.js does not change, so final downsampling stays off there.
  • The customization cornerstone.gpuSettingsPreset replaces
cornerstone.gpuCapabilityProfile. Its default is null. A value selects that preset
and turns final downsampling on. null returns to appConfig.lossyDownsampling.final
and to the Cornerstone3D default preset.
  • OHIF no longer selects medium by default. With final downsampling on and no
customization, the Cornerstone3D default preset applies.
  • extensions/cornerstone/src/utils/initGpuSettingsPreset.ts replaces
initGpuCapabilityProfile.ts. The function applies the preset with
setGpuSettingsPreset before a mode opens a viewport. The function applies the preset
again when the global or the mode customization changes.
  • A build of @cornerstonejs/core without presets logs a warning and keeps its behaviour.
  • Files in platform/app/public/customizations/gpu/ select a preset: low-tablet, low,
    medium, high, and high-texture-4096. platform/app/public/customizations/index.html
lists the files. A later pull request adds gpu/auto with the automatic mode.
  • low states a texture edge of 256 and 2 GB of texture memory. An earlier version of the
documentation gave wrong values for low.
  • high-texture-4096 is a control for the demonstration, and not a real device. No device
is tested to render a texture edge above 2048. Do not use this preset in production.

Fix in the cornerstone extension. The updateVolumeData command now skips the frame
updates when the volume has no texture. A multi-resolution volume has no texture until a
viewport mounts the volume at full resolution.

CI: CircleCI and Netlify read the CS3D_REF line. These commits are the same commits
as in #6137. The two pull requests keep the same CI code until one of them merges into
master.

  • .scripts/ci/cs3d-apply-ref.sh applies the CS3D_REF line in the CircleCI unit test
job, in the CircleCI Cypress job, and in the Netlify deploy preview.
  • .scripts/cs3d-read-ref.mjs reads the line with the rules of the Playwright gate.
.scripts/cs3d-read-ref.test.mjs fails when the two copies of the rules disagree.
  • eslint.config.mjs ignores libs/, so a cloned Cornerstone3D does not count against
    the React Compiler lint budget.

CI: the description without a token. CircleCI and Netlify give a build only the number
of the pull request, and not the description. The script reads the description through the
GitHub API without a token. When the API does not answer, for example at the rate limit,
the script prints a warning, and the job uses the pinned Cornerstone3D version. A read-only
GITHUB_TOKEN avoids the rate limit of the API, but CircleCI and Netlify do not need one.

Documentation.

  • multiresolution-testing.md is a new page. The page says how to run the branch locally
and in CI, how to select a GPU settings preset, and what to check.
  • specificCustomizations.md documents cornerstone.gpuSettingsPreset.
  • cs3d-integration.md documents the CircleCI and Netlify jobs.

Expected result of the merge guard

The CS3D Branch Merge Guard job reports a failure while the CS3D_REF line names a
branch. That result is correct and it is advisory: a merge of this pull request would
leave master dependent on unreleased Cornerstone3D code. Do not merge this pull request
until the Cornerstone3D work has a release. Then change the line as the integration page
describes.

CS3D_REF: feat/multires-voxel-manager-base

Future work

  • cornerstonejs/cornerstone3D#3034: a memory budget for each display set in view. The GPU settings presets of this pull request work when all of the display sets in view fit in the GPU memory. Cornerstone3D does not know how many display sets OHIF shows, so the fit test can fail on a device with less memory. In the proposal, OHIF calculates a budget for each display set in view after an event of insufficient GPU memory, and sends the budgets to Cornerstone3D.

    • Documented GPU profiles and how to configure them.
  • Chores
    • CI and deploy previews can now test against a specified Cornerstone3D version or branch.

…work

The page says how to run OHIF against the Cornerstone3D branch
`feat/multires-voxel-manager-base`, both locally and in CI, and it says what a
tester must check: that a series of more than 2048 images opens, that a
reformat holds no band and no black line, that the measurements do not change,
and that a segmentation stays aligned.

It also states the two limits that a reader may otherwise take as defects. The
resolution of a viewport does not change while a volume loads, and nothing
probes the device.

The page links the existing CS3D integration page rather than repeating the
`CS3D_REF` mechanism.

The change broadens which Cornerstone3D code runs in tests and preview builds while keeping the source repository fixed. No introduced privilege escalation was established, but build credential isolation and external rendering behavior remain unverified.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — Selected dependency code runs with the build job's ambient authority and can affect the generated viewer artifact. Demonstrated scope includes the CI workspace and Netlify output. Credential, production-environment, and downstream data access depend on unavailable provider policy and deployment configuration.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — PR metadata newly selects dependency execution in additional jobs, but the inspected comparison does not establish newly gained credential authority: checkout-controlled install and test execution and the Cypress context already existed. Treating these additions as a verified privilege escalation or bypass of the separate self-hosted GitHub gate would exceed the evidence.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The parser restricts ref grammar and Git ref-name shape. The consumer quotes the branch argument and fixes the clone repository, preventing the supported input from naming an arbitrary fork or supplying shell syntax. These are input controls, not proof that every selectable upstream branch is approved or that build secrets are isolated.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — The profile handler ignores falsy values, but a simple null or cleared higher-priority customization normally resolves through the service to the medium default. Thus a non-default-to-null transition cannot be assumed to retain stale state. Empty strings remain ignored, and reconfiguration of existing viewport actors depends on uninspected Cornerstone3D behavior.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Resolve branch selections to immutable commits shared across test and deployment builds, and explicitly verify provider-side secret isolation and preview-only publishing permissions. These are provenance and containment improvements, not verified missing production controls.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title uses the conventional commit format and names the main change: CS3D multi-resolution volume demonstration in the cornerstone extension, with GPU presets, lossy downsampling flags, and CS3D_REF CI support. It is long and lists several secondary items, but it clearly reflects the changeset. The title is 151 characters, which is longer than a concise title should be, but it remains accurate.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The PR description is thorough and follows the repository template's intent. It covers the context (what the PR does and why, with links to Cornerstone3D PR #2931 and the deploy preview), the changes (config, GPU settings presets, the updateVolumeData fix, CI scripts, docs), and detailed testing steps with links and a checklist of what to verify. It also documents known limits and future work. The template's Checklist section is not ticked, and the Tested Environment fields (OS, Node version, browser) are left as template placeholders, though the description does name a test GPU (NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060 Laptop GPU). The PR title checklist and the code documentation checkbox are not confirmed. These are non-critical gaps, so the description is mostly complete.

Before, only the Playwright workflow read the CS3D_REF line. The CircleCI
unit test and Cypress jobs, and the Netlify deploy preview, always used the
pinned @cornerstonejs/* versions, so a PR that needs an unreleased CS3D
change failed there even when Playwright passed against the branch.

- .scripts/cs3d-read-ref.mjs reads the PR body with the rules of the
Playwright gate job. The gate keeps its copy inline, because it runs
  before any PR code.
- .scripts/cs3d-read-ref.test.mjs runs the real gate script from the
workflow file against the same bodies, and fails when the two disagree.
- .scripts/ci/cs3d-apply-ref.sh applies the ref after the ordinary install:
nothing, a version rewrite, or a clone, build and link of the branch.

The lint budget lints `.`, and eslint.config.mjs did not ignore libs/. When
a CS3D_REF line names a branch, cs3d-apply-ref.sh clones and builds CS3D into
libs/@cornerstonejs, so the CS3D files counted against the OHIF budget
(99 errors and 106 warnings, against 96 and 94). A local CS3D checkout had the
same effect.

…ume has no texture

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
CircleCI and Netlify give a build only the PR number, not the body, so
cs3d-read-ref.mjs reads the body through the GitHub API without a token.
At the unauthenticated rate limit the job lost the CS3D_REF line and ran
against the pinned version.

A `.cs3d-ref` file at the repository root now holds the same
`CS3D_REF: <ref>` line. The script uses the file only when the API does not
answer. The body still wins when it is readable, and the script warns when
the file and the body disagree, so a stale file is visible. This removes the
need for a GITHUB_TOKEN in the CircleCI and Netlify settings.

Same ref as the CS3D_REF line of the PR body. Delete this file together
with that line.

The `cornerstone.gpuCapabilityProfile` customization names a Cornerstone3D
capability profile, and the cornerstone extension applies it with
setActiveGpuCapabilityProfile before a mode opens a viewport. A build of
@cornerstonejs/core without profiles logs a warning and keeps its behaviour.

Five `?customization=gpu/<id>` files ship for the demonstration of the
multi-resolution volume work: low-tablet, low, medium, high and the
high-texture-4096 control. The testing page now uses pnpm commands and
describes the profiles.

The default of cornerstone.gpuCapabilityProfile is now `medium`: a texture
edge of 2048 and 8 GB of texture memory, after the matching change in the
Cornerstone3D branch. A laptop with an 8 GB GPU crashed under the
Cornerstone3D default of `high` (32 GB).

The docs, the customization files and the customization index also state
the real values of `low` (256 edge, 2 GB), which were wrong.

…nd drop the nth strategy from mpr

The volume retrieve configuration is now the Cornerstone3D
coarseInterleavedRetrieveStages, with a fallback to the stock interleaved
stages for a Cornerstone3D that lacks them. The stages retrieve every 64th
image at the offsets 0, 21 and 42 first, and copy each one to the empty
frames around it, so a reformat shows no gray lines while it loads.

The mpr hanging protocol no longer names the nth strategy. A protocol with
a strategy loads through getImageLoadRequests and never reaches the volume
retrieve configuration.

…wnsampling from the app config

- `appConfig.lossyDownsampling` goes to the Cornerstone3D init. The e2e,
netlify and dev configs turn on final downsampling; config/default.js
  keeps it off.
- The customization `cornerstone.gpuSettingsPreset` (was
`cornerstone.gpuCapabilityProfile`) selects a preset and turns on final
downsampling, also in config/default.js. It defaults to null, so the
  Cornerstone3D default preset applies.
- Add `customizations/gpu/auto.jsonc`.

…efault.js

config/default.js stays locked down with final downsampling off. The other
configs, which serve tests, demos and local servers, turn it on, as e2e.js,
netlify.js and dev.js already do.

…xplain how to turn it on

Only the developer configs (dev.js, netlify.js, e2e.js, customization.js)
turn on lossyDownsampling.final. The other configs that c1f4f03 changed
return to the master version. default.js and the docker-nginx recipes get a
short commented-out block that shows the options and the device risk.

Docs: configurationFiles.md documents lossyDownsampling; the testing page
gets user and implementation requirements for which builds turn it on;
correct the config lists and the ?customization= claims for default.js.

…nd list the known limitations

- updateVolumeData calls volume.modified(), which marks the imageData and
every texture set, also a reduced set, dirty.
- The test notes narrow "as before" to the texture, and list the MPR load
order and the transient label as user-visible changes in every build.
- The new-viewport text follows the hybrid design of the CS3D branch.
- Add the known limitations: the other hanging protocols, the indicator
z-index, the acquisition-plane test of the new viewports (#6405), and
  the missing tests (#6404).

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…geometry

An axial MPR viewport on an axial CT names the orientation 'axial', so
the old test of the view state gave false. For a volume source, the
adapter now calls utilities.isAcquisitionPlaneNormal of Cornerstone3D,
which is the rule by which the planar viewport draws the acquired frames.
A build of Cornerstone3D without that function keeps the old test.

Fixes #6405

…ll bar for a small tilt

- The contract test of isInAcquisitionPlane on a native volume restores
the cache.getVolume spy in afterEach, so a failed assertion does not
leak the spy into later tests.
- The test notes say that for a tilt of about 0.5 to 8 degrees the new
and the legacy viewports show different forms of the scroll bar.
