[#20989][fix] DeepSeek streaming tool parsers: scan only new text and complete a call that ends in the last delta - #20990
This PR now also carries #21005, which changed the same two DeepSeek V3 and V3.1 parser files. It was folded in here as requested in review so both changes are reviewed together. #21005 is closed in favour of this PR.
It has two parts:
The DeepSeek streaming tool parsers (V3, V3.1, V3.2, and V4 and V4.1 through V3.2) scan only new text while a tool call streams, so a long call costs linear time.
DeepSeekV3Parser.finish and DeepSeekV31Parser.finish complete a tool call whose end arrives in the last delta, which otherwise reaches the client with empty arguments.
The branch is rebased on current main (0a03c3ed05), which includes #20873 and #21025. #20873 reworked deepseekv32_parser.py streaming (layout newlines around the calls block, and reading the rest of an increment once the block closes). The V3.2 part of this PR was re-applied on top of it. Its early return now applies only while an invoke is open and its end tag has not arrived, so the text after the calls block that #20873 reads in the same increment is still emitted. The search position resets whenever #20873's code trims the buffer from the front.
Part 1: scan only new text while a tool call streams
Problem
The DeepSeek streaming tool parsers rerun a regular expression over the whole buffered tool call on every increment, so one long tool call costs time that grows with the square of its length.
Streaming one write_file call, four characters per increment, the argument made of ordinary code lines (CPU, two runs each, shown as first / second):

On main each fourfold step in length costs 10 to 15 times more. With this PR it costs about 3 to 7 times more. A profile of the 64k case with this PR shows the time inside the two parser functions themselves, which append each delta to the growing buffer and argument strings. A model that repeats the DSML opener until max_tokens took 53 s for 16k characters with deepseek_v32 and 62 s with deepseek_v4. It takes 0.15 s with this PR.
With the default num_postprocess_workers=0 the parser runs in chat_stream_generator on the server event loop, so this time is taken from every other request on the server.
Root cause
deepseekv3_parser.py: parse_streaming_increment searches <|tool▁call▁begin|>(.*)<|tool▁sep|>(.*)\n```json\n(.*)\n```.* over the buffer on every increment. The pattern can only match once the closing fence of the json block has arrived, but the greedy groups backtrack over the whole buffer each time it fails.
deepseekv31_parser.py: searches <|tool▁call▁begin|>(.*)<|tool▁sep|>(.*?)(<|tool▁call▁end|>|$), then strips, compares and json.loads the whole argument text on every increment to find the part that is new.
deepseekv32_parser.py (also used by deepseek_v4 and deepseek_v41): searches the invoke pattern (.*?)(</|DSML|invoke>|$) and runs _parse_parameters_from_xml and json.dumps on the open invoke, though a call is only sent once </|DSML|invoke> arrives.
Fix
Each parser remembers how far it has searched the buffer and looks for the marker that can change its result only in text that arrived since then.
deepseek_v3 runs its pattern only when new text holds the closing fence `\n```` (or once the name of a call is out).
deepseek_v32 runs its invoke loop only when new text holds </|DSML|invoke>, and parses the parameters of an invoke only once it is complete.
deepseek_v31 runs its pattern only when new text holds <|tool▁sep|>. While the arguments of a call stream, it reads them from the new text and tracks whether a string or bracket is still open, so it calls json.loads only when the arguments can be complete. If a second separator arrives while a call is open, it falls back to the existing whole-buffer match for the rest of that call, so that case also behaves as before.
deepseek_v31 also holds back a partial <|tool▁call▁end|> at the end of the buffer until the rest of the token arrives. Without that, a delta ending in complete JSON plus the start of the token sent the partial token as arguments and the call stayed open. Main sends the partial token and then the full arguments a second time in that case.
Apart from that V3.1 change, the streamed results are the same as on main. For each of the five parsers, a seeded corpus of 3000 outputs (well-formed calls with text around them, truncated outputs, inserted or removed characters, several calls in one block) was streamed with five chunkings each (one delta, one character per delta, three random splits, never splitting a special token). Every increment's normal_text and tool call deltas, and the finish() result, were identical between main and this PR, for three seeds (45000 streamed runs per parser). With the partial end token hold-back, V3.1 differs from main on about 16% of the inputs. The differences are inputs that end inside the call end token, malformed inputs where both outputs are wrong, and a lone < in the arguments that is sent one delta later. In every run where main's streamed calls match detect_and_parse, this PR's calls match too.
Part 2: complete a tool call that ends in the last delta
Problem
With several tokens per streamed delta (MTP or other speculative decoding, or stream_interval above 1) the last delta of a response can hold the end of a tool call. The DeepSeek V3 and V3.1 streaming parsers then send the tool name with an empty arguments string.

(Arguments the client receives, with finish() called at the end as postprocess_handlers.apply_tool_parser does.)
Root cause
parse_streaming_increment sends at most one tool name or the arguments of one call per increment, and the arguments come one increment after the name. V3 sends the name only once the closing fence of the json block has arrived. V3.1 sends it when the separator arrives. When no increment follows, the arguments stay in the buffer. Neither class overrides BaseToolParser.finish, which returns nothing.
Fix
DeepSeekV3Parser.finish and DeepSeekV31Parser.finish send the rest of the arguments of the open call. They act only when all of these hold:
the name of the open call has already been sent,
the buffer holds exactly one <|tool▁call▁begin|>, and that call is complete with its <|tool▁call▁end|> token (matched with the class's own func_call_regex and func_detail_regex, the patterns detect_and_parse uses),
the name in that match is non-empty and equal to the name that was sent,
the arguments in that match are a complete JSON object and start with the arguments already sent.
Then finish() sends the remaining part, so the client ends up with exactly the argument text detect_and_parse reads for that call. In every other case finish() returns an empty result, as on main. finish() never sends a new tool name, never changes arguments already sent and returns no normal_text.
Cases left as on main on purpose:
Two calls in one delta. The whole-buffer pattern of parse_streaming_increment has a greedy first group, so the first call has already received the arguments of the second. Completing the second call would send those arguments twice. At finish() this shows as a call in the buffer whose name was never sent.
A damaged or missing end token, or arguments that are no complete JSON object. detect_and_parse drops such a call, so there is nothing safe to send.
Test Coverage
New CPU-only tests in tests/unittest/llmapi/apps/test_tool_parsers.py:
test_deepseek_long_tool_call_streams_in_linear_time, parametrized over the five DeepSeek parsers. It streams a 64k-character argument four characters per delta, checks the name and arguments against detect_and_parse, and bounds the time at 10 s.
test_deepseek_v31_two_calls_stream_at_any_chunk_size, chunk sizes 1 to 8, checks names, argument text and stored arguments of two V3.1 calls.
Results on current main (0a03c3ed05), CPU, tensorrt_llm 1.4.0rc1 wheel with the tool_parser package loaded from the checkout:
Whole test_tool_parsers.py with this branch's tests on main's parsers: 16 of the new tests fail (5 linear-time cases on the 10 s bound, 6 of 8 V3.1 chunk sizes, 5 finish_completes cases with empty arguments), plus the 4 tests below.
The same four tests fail on main and with this branch (TestQwen3CoderRequiredTools::test_required_stream_matches_complete_response[10000-True] and three TestQwen3CoderParameterRecovery::test_chat_recovery_policy_preserves_required_arguments cases). They go through postprocess_handlers and the reasoning parser, which this local setup takes from the 1.4.0rc1 wheel, so they come from the setup.
The timing table and differential run in Part 1 and the result table in Part 2 were measured on 687359e2, before the rebase onto #20873.

Dev Engineer Review
The DeepSeek V3, V3.1, and V3.2 parsers now track scan positions to avoid repeatedly searching buffered tool-call text. V3 and V3.1 also add finish() handling for complete JSON arguments held at stream end; V3.2’s finish() emits held text only when no calls block remains open. V4 and V4.1 use the V3.2 parser behavior. Verify partial delimiters, consecutive calls, whitespace, and incomplete or malformed JSON. Test execution results are unavailable.
QA Engineer Review
Modified test file: tests/unittest/llmapi/apps/test_tool_parsers.py. The added test_deepseek_long_tool_call_streams_in_linear_time checks streaming and one-shot results for five parser variants, with a 10-second bound. test_deepseek_v31_two_calls_stream_at_any_chunk_size checks two calls, preserved argument strings, parsed stored arguments, and call-end tokens split across chunk sizes 1–8.
The test module is listed in tests/integration/test_lists/test-db/l0_cpu.yml. No manual-QA list entry was found. The tests cover the reported performance issue and selected chunk-boundary cases; malformed arguments and broader delimiter boundaries need follow-up. Coverage verdict: needs follow-up. Test execution results are unavailable.

The new finish() path should emit only complete, matching JSON arguments that extend the already streamed arguments.
tensorrt_llm/serve/tool_parser/deepseekv32_parser.py: Verify that invoke parameters are parsed after the closing tag and that saved search positions remain correct as text is consumed. Check held text at stream end and behavior inside an unfinished calls block.
tensorrt_llm/serve/tool_parser/deepseekv3_parser.py: Verify closing-fence detection across chunk boundaries and after buffer prefixes are removed. Check finish() behavior when the final delta contains a call end.
tests/unittest/llmapi/apps/test_tool_parsers.py: The new tests cover long streamed arguments across five parsers and V3.1 calls across chunk sizes 1–8. The file is listed in the CPU CI test list.
DeepSeek V3, V3.1, and V3.2 now track streaming search positions or argument state as tool calls arrive. V3 and V3.1 add finalization for eligible buffered arguments. Tests cover long calls across five parsers and V3.1 calls split across small chunks.
V3 and V3.2 track where end-marker searches should resume. V3.2 parses parameters only after an invoke closes. Tests exercise long arguments across five DeepSeek parsers.

Explanation
Active directly linked issue [#20989] requires near-linear streaming time for DeepSeek V3, V3.1, V3.2, V4, and V4.1 parsers. The diff adds search positions and marker-gated parsing in deepseekv3_parser.py, deepseekv31_parser.py, and deepseekv32_parser.py; V4 and V4.1 inherit the V3.2 behavior. The V3.1 path streams only new argument text and tracks JSON state. The V3.2 path parses parameters only after an invoke end tag. The added tests cover all five parsers with long streamed arguments and cover V3.1 chunk boundaries. The available evidence supports the performance requirement.

Explanation
The diff also adds DeepSeekV3Parser.finish and DeepSeekV31Parser.finish. These methods emit buffered arguments when a tool call ends in the last delta. The related tests cover final-delta completion and ambiguous-buffer cases. This is a separate functional change from [#20989]'s performance requirement. The current description associates it with closed issue #21005, but closed issues provide background only and do not establish an active scope target.

Add a V3.1 regression test for separator fallback and argument whitespace.
The new linear-time test covers one separator-free call. The existing V3.1 multiple-call case is one-shot, and the streaming cases use one call. They do not exercise the _args_start = -1 fallback or _stream_arguments across chunk boundaries.
Add a parametrized V3.1 streaming case with a separator inside a JSON string, two consecutive calls, and meaningful whitespace split across chunks. Assert explicit expected streamed names, argument fragments, and final calls. Do not rely only on detect_and_parse for the embedded-separator case because its greedy func_detail_regex can share the same failure.

Keep active argument streams on _stream_arguments().
A valid JSON string can contain <|tool▁sep|>. The changed branch treats that value as a new delimiter and switches to the greedy fallback regex. The regex then captures the JSON prefix as part of func_name and only the suffix as func_args_raw. The closing JSON and call-end token normally fail is_complete_json(), so the parser emits polluted argument deltas and leaves the call unfinished.
Advancing _sep_search_start only fixes the repeated scan. Route an active argument stream through _stream_arguments(), which already preserves separators inside strings and handles completion.

Test added in 6c7f5a7: test_deepseek_v31_two_calls_stream_at_any_chunk_size streams two consecutive calls with whitespace inside the values and around the JSON at chunk sizes 1 to 8. Those cuts also split the call end token. It asserts the streamed names, the exact argument text per call and the stored arguments. Six of the eight sizes failed on the previous head and all pass now. The failures came from the partial end token in the other thread.
On routing an active stream through _stream_arguments() when a separator appears inside a JSON string: I kept the fallback in this PR. Main uses the same greedy pattern for that case and produces the same broken arguments, and detect_and_parse shares the limit through func_detail_regex. A complete fix also touches the one-shot path, so it fits better in its own PR with its own tests. For the same reason the new test leaves out the embedded separator case.
For normal V3.1 JSON arguments, each delta reaches _stream_arguments and executes both growing-string concatenations. Each update materializes the previous argument text again, so the total work is quadratic. _track_json_nesting delays JSON parsing until completion, but it does not avoid these copies. Accumulate chunks and join once when the call completes, while preserving the string contract required by streamed_args_for_tool for unfinished streams.

Update `_stream_arguments` to accumulate argument deltas in append-only chunks
instead of repeatedly concatenating onto `_last_arguments` and
`streamed_args_for_tool`. Join the chunks once when the call completes, while
preserving the string contract of `streamed_args_for_tool` for unfinished
streams.

I measured this and kept the current code in this PR. With cProfile on one call of 262144 argument characters at 4 per delta, the two concatenations in _stream_arguments take about a third of the time. self._buffer += new_text in parse_streaming_increment takes about another third, and the same buffer append is in 13 places across the tool parsers. Switching only these two strings leaves the copy pattern in place. At 65536 characters the whole V3.1 stream takes 0.64 to 0.69 s on this branch. Main takes 33 to 35 s. A fix for the growing-string copies should cover _buffer as well, so I would do it as a separate change.

Consume the retained call-end prefix before emitting normal text.
If JSON completes with a partial <|tool▁call▁end|> suffix, this line keeps the suffix in _buffer and closes the call. When later chunks make the suffix differ from a call-start token before the call-end token is complete, parse_streaming_increment() emits the suffix as normal_text. For example, split the end token after <|tool▁call▁, then deliver end and |> separately. Keep the pending call-end token out of normal text until the parser consumes it. Add a V3.1 streaming test that asserts both the arguments and empty normal_text for this split; the existing small-chunk test checks only calls and arguments. As per path instructions, material changed streaming behavior needs a meaningful regression test.

…xt while a tool call streams
The DeepSeek V3, V3.1 and V3.2 streaming tool parsers (V4 and V4.1
inherit V3.2) reran a regular expression over the whole buffered tool
call on every increment, so streaming one call cost time quadratic in
its length. One 64k-character write_file call took 23 to 33 s of CPU,
on the server event loop when num_postprocess_workers is 0.
Each parser now remembers how far it has searched the buffer and looks
for the marker that can change its result only in new text:
- V3 runs its pattern only when new text holds the closing fence of the
json block, which the pattern needs to match.
- V3.2 runs its invoke loop only when new text holds the invoke end tag,
and parses the parameters of an invoke only once it is complete.
- V3.1 runs its pattern only when new text holds a tool separator. While
the arguments of a call stream it reads them from the new text and
calls json.loads only when no string or bracket is open. A second
separator inside an open call falls back to the whole-buffer match.
The streamed results are unchanged. A seeded corpus of 3000 outputs per
parser, each fed with five chunkings, gives identical increments and
finish() results before and after.

When a delta ended with complete JSON and the start of
<|tool▁call▁end|>, _stream_arguments sent the partial token as
arguments and the call never completed. It now holds back a suffix
that starts the call end token. When the JSON completes, that suffix
stays in the buffer so the rest of the token is read as markup.
Add a V3.1 test that streams two calls with whitespace in their values
at chunk sizes 1 to 8 and checks names, argument text and stored
arguments.

…l call that ends in the last delta
parse_streaming_increment sends at most one tool name or the arguments
of one call per increment, and the arguments follow the name one
increment later. When the last delta of a stream holds the closing part
of a call (V3: the closing fence and the end tokens, V3.1: the separator,
the arguments and the end tokens), the name went out and the arguments
were never sent, because finish() was the default no-op. Several tokens
per delta happen with speculative decoding and with stream_interval > 1.
finish() now sends the rest of the arguments of the open call. It acts
only when the name of that call has been sent, the buffer holds exactly
one call with its end token, the name in the buffer is the same non-empty
name, and the arguments there are a complete JSON object that starts with
what was already sent. These are the arguments detect_and_parse reads for
that call. In every other case, for example a damaged end token, a call
without its end, or two calls that arrived in one delta, finish() sends
nothing, as before.

** A partial call-end token held in _buffer can leak into normal_text.**
This repeats the earlier open Major comment on this line. Line 341 keeps the partial <|tool▁call▁end|> suffix in _buffer. On the next increment the buffer has no start token, so Lines 144-154 only hold it back if it is a prefix of a start token.
<|tool▁call▁ is a prefix of <|tool▁call▁begin|>, so the parser holds it. After end or e arrives, the buffer is no longer a prefix of a start token. The parser then emits it as normal_text. With chunk size 1, <|tool▁call▁e reaches content.
Hold a partial end token in the no-tool-call branch (Lines 145-148):

When finish() emits a complete argument payload, it updates _last_arguments and streamed_args_for_tool but leaves prev_tool_call_arr[current_tool_id]["arguments"] as {}. The serving-layer completion state can therefore contain empty arguments for a fully streamed call.

Description
Fixes #20989. Fixes #21004.
This PR now also carries #21005, which changed the same two DeepSeek V3 and V3.1 parser files. It was folded in here as requested in review so both changes are reviewed together. #21005 is closed in favour of this PR.
It has two parts:
DeepSeekV3Parser.finishandDeepSeekV31Parser.finishcomplete a tool call whose end arrives in the last delta, which otherwise reaches the client with empty arguments. The branch is rebased on current
main(0a03c3ed05), which includes #20873 and #21025. #20873 reworkeddeepseekv32_parser.pystreaming (layout newlines around the calls block, and reading the rest of an increment once the block closes). The V3.2 part of this PR was re-applied on top of it. Its early return now applies only while an invoke is open and its end tag has not arrived, so the text after the calls block that #20873 reads in the same increment is still emitted. The search position resets whenever #20873's code trims the buffer from the front.Part 1: scan only new text while a tool call streams
Problem
The DeepSeek streaming tool parsers rerun a regular expression over the whole buffered tool call on every increment, so one long tool call costs time that grows with the square of its length.
Streaming one
write_filecall, four characters per increment, the argument made of ordinary code lines (CPU, two runs each, shown as first / second):On main each fourfold step in length costs 10 to 15 times more. With this PR it costs about 3 to 7 times more. A profile of the 64k case with this PR shows the time inside the two parser functions themselves, which append each delta to the growing buffer and argument strings. A model that repeats the DSML opener until
max_tokenstook 53 s for 16k characters withdeepseek_v32and 62 s withdeepseek_v4. It takes 0.15 s with this PR.With the default
num_postprocess_workers=0the parser runs inchat_stream_generatoron the server event loop, so this time is taken from every other request on the server.Root cause
deepseekv3_parser.py:parse_streaming_incrementsearches<|tool▁call▁begin|>(.*)<|tool▁sep|>(.*)\n```json\n(.*)\n```.*over the buffer on every increment. The pattern can only match once the closing fence of the json block has arrived, but the greedy groups backtrack over the whole buffer each time it fails.deepseekv31_parser.py: searches<|tool▁call▁begin|>(.*)<|tool▁sep|>(.*?)(<|tool▁call▁end|>|$), then strips, compares andjson.loadsthe whole argument text on every increment to find the part that is new.deepseekv32_parser.py(also used bydeepseek_v4anddeepseek_v41): searches the invoke pattern(.*?)(</|DSML|invoke>|$)and runs_parse_parameters_from_xmlandjson.dumpson the open invoke, though a call is only sent once</|DSML|invoke>arrives.Fix
Each parser remembers how far it has searched the buffer and looks for the marker that can change its result only in text that arrived since then.
</|DSML|invoke>, and parses the parameters of an invoke only once it is complete.<|tool▁sep|>. While the arguments of a call stream, it reads them from the new text and tracks whether a string or bracket is still open, so it callsjson.loadsonly when the arguments can be complete. If a second separator arrives while a call is open, it falls back to the existing whole-buffer match for the rest of that call, so that case also behaves as before.deepseek_v31 also holds back a partial
<|tool▁call▁end|>at the end of the buffer until the rest of the token arrives. Without that, a delta ending in complete JSON plus the start of the token sent the partial token as arguments and the call stayed open. Main sends the partial token and then the full arguments a second time in that case.Apart from that V3.1 change, the streamed results are the same as on main. For each of the five parsers, a seeded corpus of 3000 outputs (well-formed calls with text around them, truncated outputs, inserted or removed characters, several calls in one block) was streamed with five chunkings each (one delta, one character per delta, three random splits, never splitting a special token). Every increment's
normal_textand tool call deltas, and thefinish()result, were identical between main and this PR, for three seeds (45000 streamed runs per parser). With the partial end token hold-back, V3.1 differs from main on about 16% of the inputs. The differences are inputs that end inside the call end token, malformed inputs where both outputs are wrong, and a lone<in the arguments that is sent one delta later. In every run where main's streamed calls matchdetect_and_parse, this PR's calls match too.Part 2: complete a tool call that ends in the last delta
Problem
With several tokens per streamed delta (MTP or other speculative decoding, or
stream_intervalabove 1) the last delta of a response can hold the end of a tool call. The DeepSeek V3 and V3.1 streaming parsers then send the tool name with an emptyargumentsstring.{"city": "Paris"}{"city": "Paris"}""{"city": "Paris"}""{"city": "Paris"}""{}""{"city": "Paris"}(Arguments the client receives, with
finish()called at the end aspostprocess_handlers.apply_tool_parserdoes.)Root cause
parse_streaming_incrementsends at most one tool name or the arguments of one call per increment, and the arguments come one increment after the name. V3 sends the name only once the closing fence of the json block has arrived. V3.1 sends it when the separator arrives. When no increment follows, the arguments stay in the buffer. Neither class overridesBaseToolParser.finish, which returns nothing.Fix
DeepSeekV3Parser.finishandDeepSeekV31Parser.finishsend the rest of the arguments of the open call. They act only when all of these hold:<|tool▁call▁begin|>, and that call is complete with its<|tool▁call▁end|>token (matched with the class's ownfunc_call_regexandfunc_detail_regex, the patternsdetect_and_parseuses),Then
finish()sends the remaining part, so the client ends up with exactly the argument textdetect_and_parsereads for that call. In every other casefinish()returns an empty result, as on main.finish()never sends a new tool name, never changes arguments already sent and returns nonormal_text.Cases left as on main on purpose:
parse_streaming_incrementhas a greedy first group, so the first call has already received the arguments of the second. Completing the second call would send those arguments twice. Atfinish()this shows as a call in the buffer whose name was never sent.detect_and_parsedrops such a call, so there is nothing safe to send.Test Coverage
