Description

The benchmark readiness probe drops HTTP error bodies and retries a rejected request for 15 minutes. Fail promptly on permanent HTTP 4xx responses with the server reason, preserve retries for 408/429 and server errors, and keep heartbeats best effort. Remove the unconditional disaggregated KV-transfer diagnosis. This is a diagnostic improvement; the underlying MiniMax-M3 HTTP 400 remains unresolved.

Test Coverage

Reproduced the discarded HTTP 400 reason against a local HTTP server. All 29 readiness and existing client CPU tests passed. Register new readiness tests in l0_cpu. Repository pre-commit and DCO checks passed. The original Blackwell benchmark has not been rerun. Combined CPU validation: 60 passed.

PR Checklist

  • Please check this after reviewing the above items as appropriate for this PR.

Dev Engineer Review

  • post_one_token adds the keyword-only fail_on_client_error option. When enabled, permanent HTTP 4xx responses except 408 and 429 raise RuntimeError with up to 2,048 bytes of the response body.
  • verify_endpoint enables this option for both aggregated and disaggregated endpoints. Transient HTTP responses and transport failures remain retryable; heartbeat requests remain best effort by default.
  • The change improves readiness diagnostics but does not resolve the underlying MiniMax-M3 HTTP 400.

QA Engineer Review

  • Added tests/unittest/scripts/test_perf_client_readiness.py and registered it in tests/integration/test_lists/test-db/l0_cpu.yml.
  • Five test functions cover permanent rejections, retryable HTTP statuses, heartbeat errors, transport failures, and bounded error messages. Parameterized cases cover five rejection statuses and four transient statuses.
  • The tests use a local HTTP server and verify request count and selected request fields. Coverage verdict: sufficient for the changed readiness paths.
  • Test execution results are not established by the inspected source.

Per-File QA Perspective

  • tests/integration/defs/perf/agentx_client.py: Verify the new fail_on_client_error path, permanent 4xx response handling, retry behavior, and best-effort heartbeat behavior. Confirm readiness diagnostics apply to both endpoint modes.
  • tests/integration/test_lists/test-db/l0_cpu.yml: Adds the readiness test file to the CPU CI list.
  • tests/unittest/scripts/test_perf_client_readiness.py: Tests rejection reasons, transient retries, heartbeat and transport failures, and bounded rejection bodies. The file is listed in l0_cpu.yml.

Walkthrough

The AgentX client can fail readiness checks immediately for non-retryable HTTP 4xx responses. It continues retrying transient failures. CPU-only tests cover response handling, retry behavior, heartbeat requests, transport failures, and bounded error messages.

The description includes the required Description, Test Coverage, and PR Checklist sections. It explains the problem, solution, test coverage, validation results, and known limitation. The checklist details are brief but sufficient for this change.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title names the main change: benchmark readiness now reports request rejections. The changeset makes permanent HTTP 4xx responses in post_one_token raise RuntimeError with the server reason, and adds tests for that behavior. The title uses the bracketed tags and a short phrase, which fits the author's convention. It does not mention the retry and heartbeat behavior, but it does not need to cover every detail.

91-104: 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win

Run the heartbeat caller instead of calling the helper directly.

This test calls post_one_token directly, so it does not cover _Heartbeat._run. A regression that adds fail_on_client_error=True at the heartbeat call site would pass this test while making a 400 response raise from the heartbeat thread. Drive _Heartbeat._run synchronously with a controlled wait result so the test exercises the caller without timing dependence.

…erver threads

The readiness tests failed in about 4 of 5 local runs with the
pytest-threadleak settings from tests/unittest/pytest.ini (threadleak =
True). ThreadingHTTPServer handles each request in a new thread, and that
thread can still be running when the test returns, so threadleak reports
"Test leaked [<Thread(... (process_request_thread) ...)>]". The stub
endpoint now uses the single-threaded HTTPServer, which handles each
request on the serve_forever thread. That thread is started and joined
by the fixture.

The readiness deadline in these tests is also raised from 1 s to 60 s, so
a slow CI worker cannot run out of time before the retry request (from
review). time.sleep is already patched out, so passing tests do not take
longer.

Locally, with the CI pytest flags: 0 failures in 40 runs with the fix,
against failures in 15 of 21 runs without it. With the unfixed client from
main, the fixed tests still fail the same 6 rejection cases.

@BowenFu I pushed one test-only commit to this branch: d94b7a6. It changes 3 lines in tests/unittest/scripts/test_perf_client_readiness.py and does not touch agentx_client.py.

Why: tests/unittest/pytest.ini sets threadleak = True. ThreadingHTTPServer handles each request in a new thread, and that thread can still be alive when the test returns. Locally, with the CI pytest flags, some test in the file failed in about 4 of 5 runs with Test leaked [<Thread(... (process_request_thread) ...)>]. Which test failed varied between runs. The CPU stages would most likely have gone red on this file.

Change:

  • The stub endpoint now uses the single-threaded HTTPServer. Each request is handled on the serve_forever thread, which the fixture starts and joins.
  • The readiness deadline goes from 1 s to 60 s, as CodeRabbit asked. time.sleep is already patched out, so passing tests still take milliseconds.

Local result: with the CI pytest flags, 0 failures in 40 runs, compared with failures in 15 of 21 runs before the change. Against main's unfixed client, the fixed tests still fail the same 6 rejection cases, so they still detect the bug.

/bot run --disable-fail-fast is now running on d94b7a6 (PR_Github #79845).

Merge status: the ruleset requires a CODEOWNER approval from @NVIDIA/trt-llm-devs, which owns tests/unittest/**, the l0_cpu.yml test-db and defs/perf. The existing approvals do not satisfy it: LarryXFly is in qa-perf and yiqingy0 is in infra-devs. GitHub does not let a PR author approve their own PR, so the approval has to come from another trt-llm-devs member. @brnguyen2, could you take a look? You reviewed the earlier perf-sanity client and harness PRs (#20297, #20424). The full pre-merge label is added automatically after that approval, and then the multi-GPU stages can run. Once CI is green, I'll merge with --match-head-commit d94b7a6 and close nvbugs/6958731.

CI note for d94b7a6: L0 #65744 (PR_Github #79863) failed on one stage this PR cannot reach.

I re-triggered with /bot run --disable-fail-fast on the same commit, so a flaky GPU stage cannot cancel the CPU stages that run the new tests.

Approving — the comments below are optional touch-ups, not blockers.

Failing fast on a non-retryable 4xx and including the server's reason is the right fix for a readiness loop that used to hide a 400 for 15 minutes. Two small items are inline: the test-list entry is redundant, and the final timeout message still drops the last body on 5xx.

The title tag is [fix] against NVBug 6958731, but the description correctly says the underlying 400 is still unresolved. Please keep the bug open after merge (don't move it to verify-to-close on this PR), and consider using a [chore]/[test]-style tag so the history doesn't read as a fix.

@BowenFu I retagged the title from [fix] to [chore], as brnguyen2 suggested. This PR reports the MiniMax-M3 HTTP 400 but does not fix it, so nvbugs/6958731 stays open for the root cause. His two optional suggestions are going into a follow-up PR, so the CI run on d94b7a6 can finish without being restarted.
