[https://nvbugs/6958731][chore] Report the reason for retryable readiness failures - #20863
post_one_token now returns HTTP <code>: <first 2 KB of the body> for every HTTP error it does not raise. The not serving yet log line and the timeout message both show that reason.
A body that cannot be read still produces a description, so the best-effort heartbeat never raises. Transport failures still return None.
The endpoint counts as ready only on a real completion. An error description now comes back as text, and that text includes the server's body, which can name the choices field (for example, a validation error). The old readiness check was a substring match on '"choices"', so it could mistake such an error for a completion. verify_endpoint now accepts a response only if it parses as a JSON object with a choices key.
The duplicate l0_cpu.yml entry is gone. The unittest/scripts directory entry already collects test_perf_client_readiness.py. With the explicit line as well, the file ran twice in each CPU stage. In L0_MergeRequest_PR #65774, both copies ran on CPU-Generic-x86-1 and on CPU-Generic-arm-1.
nvbugs/6958731 stays open. Like #20749, this PR improves the diagnosis but does not fix the MiniMax-M3 HTTP 400.
Test Coverage
The tests are in tests/unittest/scripts/test_perf_client_readiness.py. The file runs in l0_cpu through the unittest/scripts entry.
New test_retryable_failure_reason_reaches_the_timeout_message: the stub always answers 503. The test replaces the client's time module with a fake clock whose sleep advances monotonic, so a 30 s budget with a 15 s interval allows exactly two requests. verify_endpoint raises with Last response: HTTP 503: not ready, and the test asserts the request count. The result does not depend on wall-clock time.
New test_error_body_naming_choices_is_not_a_completion: a 500 whose body names choices is retried, and so is a 200 whose JSON error body names choices. The 200 completion that follows ends the wait.
Changed test_heartbeat_request_remains_best_effort: on an HTTP 400, post_one_token now returns HTTP 400: invalid request instead of None, and it still does not raise.
The rejection, transient-retry, transport and bounded-body tests are unchanged.
Local runs used Python 3.11 and tests/unittest/pytest.ini, which enables pytest-threadleak. All 14 tests passed in each of 12 runs, with no leaked threads.
With main's agentx_client.py, the timeout-message test and the heartbeat test fail.
With the old substring check restored, the choices test fails.
ruff, ruff-format, codespell, scripts/check_test_list.py --validate and the DCO check pass.
Update (head 03ae103): merged current main, moved the timeout test onto the fake clock, and added the 200 error body to the choices test, as review asked. The only conflict was in l0_cpu.yml, where main had added unittest/others/test_http_utils_fail_fast.py next to the removed line; that line is kept. Against main, the change to agentx_client.py and l0_cpu.yml is the reviewed one, line for line. All 14 tests passed in each of 6 runs with pytest-threadleak. With the pre-PR agentx_client.py, the timeout-message and heartbeat tests still fail. The choices test fails both with the old substring check and with a variant that skips HTTP <code>: descriptions before substring-matching. ruff, ruff-format, codespell and scripts/check_test_list.py --validate pass.

post_one_token now returns HTTP status and up to 2 KB of response text for HTTP errors. It closes the error response and returns a description when reading the body fails. Transport failures still return None. When fail_on_client_error is enabled, permanent 4xx errors still raise, except 408 and 429.
verify_endpoint now parses JSON and accepts a response only when it is an object with a top-level choices key. Retry timeout messages can include the last HTTP failure. This improves diagnosis but does not fix the reported MiniMax-M3 HTTP 400. The supplied objective reports failed CI runs; local test and lint results are author-reported and not independently verified. No current review findings or severity counts were supplied.
QA Engineer Review
tests/unittest/scripts/test_perf_client_readiness.py adds or updates coverage for permanent rejection reasons, retryable 408/429/500/503 responses, timeout details, error bodies that mention choices, best-effort heartbeat errors, transport failures, and bounded response bodies. The file has seven test functions, including parameterized cases. The readiness test remains included through the unittest/scripts entry in l0_cpu.yml; the separate test-file entry was removed. The supplied objective reports 14 passing tests in local runs and failed CI runs. Coverage verdict: sufficient for the described readiness behavior.
Per-File QA Perspective
tests/integration/defs/perf/agentx_client.py — Verify HTTP error descriptions, body-size limits, retry behavior, timeout messages, and JSON readiness parsing. Confirm transport failures and permanent client-error handling remain as configured.
tests/integration/test_lists/test-db/l0_cpu.yml — Removes the separate readiness-test entry. The unittest/scripts directory entry remains, so the readiness test remains in the CPU CI list.
tests/unittest/scripts/test_perf_client_readiness.py — Covers readiness rejection, retry, timeout, response parsing, heartbeat, transport-failure, and response-size behavior. The test is included in the CPU CI list through the unittest/scripts directory entry; no manual-QA list entry was identified.
…ness failures
The AgentX readiness probe already fails fast with the server's reason on a
permanent 4xx. A 5xx, 408 or 429 response still dropped its body, so an
endpoint that kept returning 503 for the whole budget ended in "Last
response: None". post_one_token now returns "HTTP <code>: <first 2 KB of
the body>" for every HTTP error it does not raise. The "not serving yet" log
line and the timeout message therefore show the reason. A body that cannot be
read still yields a description, so the best-effort heartbeat never raises.
Because an error description is now returned as text, verify_endpoint
treats the server as ready only when the response parses as a JSON object
with a "choices" key. A substring match on '"choices"' could accept an
error body that merely names the field.
Drop the explicit l0_cpu.yml entry for test_perf_client_readiness.py. The
unittest/scripts directory entry already collects the file, so it ran
twice in each CPU stage.
New tests: a persistent 503 surfaces its reason in the timeout message,
and an error body naming "choices" is not taken as a completion. The
heartbeat test now expects the HTTP error description instead of None.

Walkthrough
The AgentX client now returns formatted HTTP error details and validates endpoint readiness using parsed JSON. Tests cover error reporting, retry behavior, and timeout messages.
post_one_token returns HTTP status and response details for non-raising HTTP errors. Permanent 4xx errors still raise, except 408 and 429. The heartbeat test expects the formatted HTTP 400 message.
verify_endpoint accepts a response only when it parses as a JSON dictionary containing choices. Tests cover timeout details and reject an error body that mentions choices. The readiness test is removed from the CPU-only test list.
NVIDIA/TensorRT-LLM#20749: Introduced the post_one_token error policy and readiness retry behavior that this change extends.

Approving — the comments below are optional touch-ups, not blockers.
The description matches the diff. The heartbeat caller ([agentx_client.py:286](https://github.com/NVIDIA/TensorRT-LLM/pull/20863/files#diff-7387acede0fb26a2cb4c5235bbd41179db9b39bf2e712157c32d6f9f9ed330abR286)) discards the return value, so changing None to an error string does not change its behavior. _is_completion is safe because the request pins "stream": False, so a successful body is always a single JSON object. I have one optional nit on the new timeout test, posted inline.
tests/unittest/scripts/test_perf_client_readiness.py:96: Optional: the client fixture patches time.sleep to a no-op, so this test busy-loops against the stub for the full 1 s of wall time. That is one HTTP round-trip plus one not serving yet log line per iteration, so possibly thousands on a fast runner. To make it bounded and independent of the clock, you could patch client.time.monotonic with a counter that passes the deadline after a few calls (or set the timeout to 0 and seed one iteration). Then the test sends a fixed, small number of requests and can assert the exact count.
…ake clock
The timeout test gave verify_endpoint a real 1 s budget while time.sleep
was a no-op, so it busy-looped against the stub for a full second of wall
time and only asserted that at least one request was sent. It now swaps
the client's time module for a fake clock whose sleep advances monotonic:
a 30 s budget with a 15 s interval allows exactly two requests, and the
test asserts that count.

This test covers a readable body only. If reading an error body starts raising instead of returning a description, the best-effort heartbeat can stop, but this test would still pass. Add a test with a response body whose read() raises OSError; assert that post_one_token returns an unreadable-body description and closes the response.
As per path instructions, check “error paths” when relevant.

The readiness test fed one 500 error body naming "choices" before the real
completion. A matcher that skips "HTTP <code>:" descriptions and then
substring-matches "choices" would still pass it. A 200 response whose JSON
error body names "choices" now precedes the completion as well, so only the
top-level "choices" key check passes.
