Review summary
Baseline: merge base ea1e68da3603, which is current main — ahead 1 / behind 0, mergeable: true. I also checked your other open PR, #1040, which touches the same Wan modeling file: it applies cleanly on top of this one, so the two do not conflict. ruff verified against a clean-main baseline: All checks passed!, 609 → 611 files already formatted. Title matches check_pr_title.yml.
1. Does it solve a real problem? Yes. ROCm users currently get flash-attn 2.8.3's composable-kernel build with no native alternative, and the measured numbers (1.28× on Wan at the default latent size, up to 1.47× on Qwen3-Omni at 64k, with parity at the FA2-vs-FA2 noise floor) make the case well. The framing of why the speedup is config-dependent — attention's share of step time, and packing making it small in the default Qwen run — is unusually honest and saves reviewers from misreading the 1.03× number.
I verified the two non-obvious mechanisms this design rests on, both in the pinned transformers 5.9.0:
return_lse=torch.is_grad_enabled()is safe. Both places that consume the kernel output guard withisinstance(out, tuple)—modeling_flash_attention_utils.py:796-797(varlen) and:804-805(dense) — so the bare-tensor return underno_gradis handled. Your docstring's claim is accurate.- The docstring is right that only the varlen shim's signature matters for kwarg selection.
lazy_import_flash_attentionbuilds the processor with_lazy_define_process_function(_flash_varlen_fn)(:251) and then uses it for the dense path too (:803). That is precisely why declaringsoftcapon the dense shim and raising is the correct design — without it, transformers would passsoftcapto the dense function and**ignoredwould swallow it.
That same mechanism, though, is where I found the one substantive problem: attention sinks are silently dropped (inline, and the main reason for the verdict below).
2. Comments / docs / tests: strong, with one test gap. The docs work here is genuinely thorough — five doc files updated consistently, the design tables, the arguments reference, and real measured numbers in the ROCm page. Two things I would tighten: the ROCm page asserts aiter ships in the image but neither the component-version table nor docker/rocm/Dockerfile.ROCm7.14 mentions it (inline), and the new test's fake aiter always returns a 2-tuple, so the return_lse=False bare-tensor branch — i.e. the eval / no_grad path — is never exercised (inline).
On CI coverage, a genuine positive worth stating because it is usually the opposite in this repo: tests/ops is one of only two directories run wholesale (gpu_unit_tests.yml:173), so tests/ops/test_aiter_attention.py is picked up automatically with no workflow edit, and the fake-module approach means it runs on the CUDA runners. Also correct: adding the name to VARLEN_ATTENTION_TYPES needs no patchgen regeneration, because the generated Omni files import that constant at runtime (patched_modeling_qwen3_omni_moe_gpu.py:113) rather than inlining its values.
3. Tidy and conflict-free: yes. The new backend slots into the existing seams rather than adding new ones, adding both aiter and veomni_flash_attention_aiter_with_sp to build_foundation_model's Literal exactly mirrors the FA2/3/4 pattern, and the naming rationale in the PR body ("flash" in impl in is_flash_attention_requested()) is the kind of thing that would otherwise be lost. One thing I checked and can confirm is fine: naming the module veomni/ops/kernels/attention/aiter.py while it does import aiter is safe, since Python 3 absolute imports resolve that to the top-level package, not to itself.
Overall: needs changes. The sink kwarg being dropped without an error is the one thing I would not merge as-is, because it fails in the same silent way the PR explicitly refuses to fail for softcap. Everything else is refinement, and the feature itself looks well built and well measured.

Attention sinks are silently dropped on this backend. Because supports_mapping is introspected from this signature (modeling_flash_attention_utils.py:251), and neither s_aux nor learnable_sink is declared here, transformers skips the sink entirely. I measured it with a stand-in function carrying exactly your declared parameter names:
s_aux: False
learnable_sink: False
and the forwarding logic is all-or-nothing:
if ((legacy_sink_param := supports_mapping["s_aux"]) or supports_mapping["learnable_sink"]) and s_aux is not None:(modeling_flash_attention_utils.py:642-646). With both False the branch is skipped, no exception is raised, and attention is computed without the sink logits. Two in-tree models pass them: gpt_oss (gpt_oss_gpu_patch_gen_config.py:35, s_aux=self.sinks) and deepseek_v4 (deepseek_v4_gpu_patch_gen_config.py:831).
This is the same hazard class you deliberately refuse for softcap, so I think it deserves the same treatment. Options, roughly in order of preference:
- If aiter's third
window_sizeslot really is the same feature, wire it through and say so — though I suspect it is a sink token count rather than gpt-oss's learnable per-head sink logit, in which case it is not a substitute. - Declare
s_aux(and/orlearnable_sink) here and raise aValueErrorlike the densesoftcapcase, so a user selectingaiterfor a sink model gets told rather than getting quietly different maths. - At a minimum, add it to the ROCm page's known-limitations list. I would not stop at this option, since the models involved are exactly the ones a ROCm user might reach for.

A length other than 2 or 3 falls through unchanged into the kernel. Given that the whole point of this helper is that aiter and flash-attn disagree on the tuple width, an explicit raise ValueError(f"unexpected window_size {window_size!r}") for len(ws) not in (2, 3) costs one line and turns a confusing kernel-level failure into a clear one. The parametrised test already covers None, 2-tuple and 3-tuple, so a fourth case would come almost free.

Minor consistency point: return_attn_probs is declared and then dropped, and **ignored swallows anything else — both silent, in a shim whose stated principle is to reject rather than silently ignore.
In practice the exposure is small, because _process_flash_attention_kwargs only forwards kwargs it finds in this signature, so **ignored is close to dead code today. That is actually the argument for removing it: without the catch-all, any kwarg a future transformers version starts forwarding becomes a loud TypeError at the boundary instead of a silent behaviour change, which is the failure mode you want here. If you would rather keep it for safety, a one-line comment saying what it is defending against would do.

Two things worth adding around this guard.
A version floor. The shim encodes three version-specific facts about aiter's API (3-tuple window_size, logits_soft_cap naming on varlen, the return_lse assertion). Nothing anywhere pins a minimum aiter: it is in no extra and not in uv.lock, and docker/rocm/Dockerfile.ROCm7.14 does not install it — it inherits whatever rocm/primus:v26.4 happens to ship. So an image refresh that moves aiter's API breaks this silently or with a confusing TypeError. Checking importlib.metadata.version("aiter") against a known-good floor right here, and mentioning that floor in the ROCm doc, would make the coupling explicit.
Failure timing. As written, attn_implementation: aiter on a CUDA host fails at the first attention forward rather than at startup. That matches how FA4 behaves today, so I am not asking you to diverge — but the repo already has the ROCm probe idiom (torch.version.hip is not None, used at veomni/ops/kernels/deepseek_v4/__init__.py:33 and precision_aligned_ops.py:36), so a check in OpsImplementationConfig.__post_init__ or build_foundation_model would be cheap and would fail fast. The same argument applies to the dense-path softcap rejection: whether a model uses softcap is knowable at build time, and raising then beats raising several minutes into a run.

This is the sentence the whole feature depends on, and it is currently unverifiable from the repo: the component-version table above (torch / torchvision / triton / flash-attn / transformers / diffusers / python) does not list aiter, and docker/rocm/Dockerfile.ROCm7.14 never installs it — it comes from the rocm/primus:v26.4 base, if at all. Please add an aiter row with the version you validated on. That is what lets a user with a different image tell whether their aiter is compatible with the calling convention the shim assumes, and it is the natural place to state the floor mentioned in my comment on flash.py.

This hand-maintained set now duplicates VARLEN_ATTENTION_TYPES in veomni/models/transformers/attention_utils.py, which you also had to extend in this PR — exactly the kind of double edit a shared constant is meant to prevent. The predicate is the same in both places ("does this backend take cu_seq_lens").
One caveat if you switch: VARLEN_ATTENTION_TYPES also contains the FA3 and FA4 names, which this set deliberately (or accidentally) omits, so importing it would additionally route Wan's FA3/FA4 runs down the varlen path. If that is desirable, this is a small improvement on top; if the narrower list is intentional, a comment saying why Wan keeps its own would stop the next person from "fixing" it.

There was a problem hiding this comment.
The fakes always return a 2-tuple, so the branch the docstring in aiter.py calls out — "without the log-sum-exp aiter returns a bare tensor rather than an (out, lse, ...) tuple" — is never exercised, even though test_lse_is_not_requested_without_autograd sets up exactly the conditions for it. That is the eval / no_grad path, so it is worth covering.
Suggestion: have the fakes return torch.zeros_like(q) when kwargs.get("return_lse") is falsy and the tuple otherwise, then add a case that drives veomni_flash.flash_attention_forward under torch.no_grad() and asserts the output shape. That pins the isinstance(out, tuple) contract you are relying on from transformers (modeling_flash_attention_utils.py:796-797, 804-805), so a future transformers change there fails a test instead of failing an eval run.
Review follow-up on ByteDance-Seed#1041. The shim's stated principle is to fail loudly rather than silently ignore an argument, and three places did not hold to it. Attention sinks were dropped silently. Transformers picks which optional kwargs to forward by introspecting the shim's signature, and its sink forwarding is all-or-nothing: with neither `s_aux` nor `learnable_sink` declared it skips them without raising, and attention is computed without the sink logits. DeepSeek-V4 passes `s_aux` unconditionally and declares no `_compatible_flash_implementations` whitelist, so selecting `aiter` for it changed the maths with no warning. Both names are now declared and rejected. aiter's kernels do take a `sink_ptr`, so real support is possible later; it is rejected rather than wired through because the semantics have not been checked against the eager reference. gpt_oss is unaffected: its whitelist already excludes aiter. `flash_attention_2` drops sinks too, since flash-attn 2.8.3 has no sink argument either, so this is a pre-existing gap made loud. `**ignored` and an unused `return_attn_probs` are gone. Every kwarg Transformers can forward is now declared and either passed on or rejected, so one it starts forwarding in a future release surfaces as a `TypeError` at this boundary instead of changing behaviour quietly. Verified against both the pinned transformers 5.9.0 and the 5.12.1 in the ROCm image that the forwarded key set is covered. `aiter_window_size` raises on a width other than 2 or 3 rather than passing the tuple through to the kernel, since disagreeing tuple widths are the reason the helper exists. Also fail at model-build time when aiter is importable but has no flash entry points. aiter gates its CK/HIP ops on being able to query the GPU architecture, so on a non-ROCm host, or in a container started without `--device /dev/kfd`, it imports fine and exports only Triton ops. The previous guard caught only `ImportError`, leaving an `AttributeError` to surface from inside the first attention forward. Tests cover the sink rejection on both paths, the window-width rejection, the `no_grad` bare-tensor return that Transformers has to unwrap, the missing-kernel guard, and the `supports_mapping` Transformers derives from the varlen signature — that mapping is the real contract here, so pinning it means a signature change cannot quietly stop a kwarg from being forwarded. The ROCm page gains the `aiter` row the component table was missing, with the version validated by building `docker/rocm/Dockerfile.ROCm7.14`; the distribution is named `amd_aiter`, so `importlib.metadata.version("aiter")` does not resolve. Wan's `use_flash_attention` set keeps its own narrower membership rather than importing `VARLEN_ATTENTION_TYPES`, which also lists FA3/FA4; a comment now says why so the next reader does not "fix" it.

Bumped to 5.16.1 and re-measured the default configs on 8×MI308X. Wan: loss |Δ| = 0, 1.25×. Qwen3-Omni: max |Δ| = 0.02, 1.04×. Both are consistent with the earlier run.
Review follow-up on ByteDance-Seed#1041. aiter's varlen forward honours `logits_soft_cap` through a dedicated CK kernel, but its backward has no softcap at all: `_flash_attn_varlen_backward` takes no such argument, `ctx` never stores one, and the backward kernels carry no `_logits` variant while the forward ones do. Gradients are therefore computed as if the cap were absent, silently losing the `1 - tanh**2(s / cap)` factor. The shim mapped `softcap` straight onto `logits_soft_cap`, and varlen is the path VeOmni takes for packed sequences, so a model with attention logit softcapping would have trained on wrong gradients. Measured on gfx942 against an eager reference implementing the same maths, with a softcap-disabled control to establish the noise floor and a per-cap activity check so a cap too large to bite cannot produce a vacuous pass: softcap cap active forward err gradient err 0.0 0.0000 0.0156 0.0195 <- control 2.0 0.9102 0.0156 4.6021 0.5 1.5449 0.0156 14.4375 0.125 2.0078 0.0156 18.7656 The forward tracks the reference at every cap while the gradient error grows monotonically with how hard the cap bites, which is the signature of a backward that ignores it. Refuse the cap when `torch.is_grad_enabled()` and keep allowing it otherwise: the forward is correct, so inference is unaffected and there is no reason to take that away. Note that under reentrant gradient checkpointing the first forward runs with grad disabled, so the failure surfaces during recompute rather than at the first forward; it is still loud, and `enable_reentrant` defaults to False. Also stop the sink rejection from recommending `flash_attention_2`. flash-attn 2.8.3 has no sink argument either and drops sinks without raising, so that fallback would trade a clear failure for silently different attention. It now points at `eager` and says why FA2 is not a substitute. Documents the window-width and softcap rejections in the ROCm known-limitations list and in the kernel-selection reference, and adds aiter to the adapter doc's `_lazy_imports` examples.

Rebased onto post-#1142 main in 9629320. AITER is now registered as its own attention/standard row (veomni_flash_attention_aiter) with GpuKernelRequirement(platforms=(ROCM_GPU,)) and requires=("aiter",). The adapter and tests were moved to the new attention layout. Verified with the attention/arguments/model suites and real gfx942 dense + varlen forward/backward. |
Register AITER as a ROCm-only VeomniOp attention row, adapt its FMHA-v3 API to the Transformers flash interface, and preserve Ulysses/varlen routing for transformer and Wan models. Reject AITER on Ascend before HF preloading, where Transformers would otherwise select its NPU path and silently lose sliding-window semantics. Document and test the backend contract, limitations, and measured parity. Co-authored-by: Cursor <cursoragent@cursor.com>

Adds
attn_implementation: aiter, dispatching attention to AMD's aiter (AI Tensor Engine for ROCm https://github.com/ROCm/aiter) FMHA-v3 kernels as an alternative to flash-attn 2.8.3's composable-kernel build. The registered name is
veomni_flash_attention_aiter_with_sp, and it has to contain "flash": transformers'is_flash_attention_requested()dispatches on a plain"flash" in implsubstring test, and a name without it sends the Omni audio/vision encoders down a non-varlen split path that size-mismatches under sequence parallelism.Validated on 8xMI308X / ROCm 7.14 against
flash_attention_2with the same seed and data. Wan2.1-1.3B DiT: 1.28x faster (5.42 -> 4.25 s/step), rising to 1.36x at real-480P latent size, per-step |delta| < 0.01 over 30 steps. Qwen3-Omni-MoE-30B: 1.03x on the default config, where packing makes attention only 7% of the step, and 1.13x -> 1.47x from 8k to 64k unpacked; max |delta| = 0.03 over 25 steps, the same as the FA2-vs-FA2 baseline.
