We held a hackathon from 9AM to 5PM with over 78 girls from all parts of Nairobi who came from our amazing partner organisations, The Scouts, Girl Up and Code Yetu to learn how to write their first lines of code. It was held at the Nairobi Game Development Centre in Parklands.
Elizabeth did a workshop on how to make a simple HTML website. She taught the girls how to rebuild a simplified version of the Jua website in Swahili. You can checkout her slides here.
Louisa did a workshop to make a simple text-based game in Python where she taught the girls how to make a game themed around their interests in Swahili. Here are her slides.
The night before our hackathon, we hosted an incredible dinner at the Atrium - Karen Blixen Coffee Gardens with 15 incredible women in tech, 4 Hack Clubbers, 7 Aspiring Girls in Tech and 2 Hack Club Staff. We got to speak to inspiring figures in tech like Lorna Ogolla, the Partnerships Lead at Google Research Africa, Isis Nyong'o, one of Kenya's first women leaders in tech working at Viacom, Google and founding Malaica, or Kathleen Siminyu, a AI and AI Policy Researcher at The Distributed AI Research Institute! The dinner was full of so many learnings and fun!
