5G Aerial Network Modeling Project

1. Problem Statement

In order to utilize the 5G network, mobile network engineers are in the process of building the necessary infrastructure. However, there is currently little understanding of telecommunications network performance in airspace. Contemporary telecommunications networks are designed, constructed, tested and optimized for users communicating near ground level, not at higher altitudes or in airspace.

So, the goal for the project is to improve understanding of network performance at different altitudes and conditions and model performance under various circumstances.

2. Deliverables

The final deliverables of our project in aerial 5G network modeling will be:

  1. Predicted network speedtest data at various altitudes and conditions
  2. Machine learning platform to predict internet speed at various latitude, longitude, and altitude.
  3. Statistical analysis/visualization of overall network speedtest data
  4. Android phone app to automatically run Ookla speed test and save results at various altitudes.

3. System Block Diagram

Our project consists of 4 main blocks:

  1. Automated data collection (of network speeds) via Android app run on mobile device attached to drone
  2. Data storage with Google Firebase real-time database
  3. Data prediction with machine learning model
  4. Data visualization
