This PR adds a comprehensive .github/copilot-instructions.md file that provides GitHub Copilot coding agents with detailed instructions for working effectively in the testcontainers-java codebase.

What's Included

The instructions cover all essential aspects for developers working with this large, Docker-intensive Java testing framework:

Build & Test Commands (All Validated)

  • Core compilation: ./gradlew :testcontainers:compileJava (~30 seconds)
  • Single test execution: ./gradlew :testcontainers:test --tests "*GenericContainerTest*" (~1 minute)
  • Example project testing: ./gradlew :docs:examples:junit5:redis:test (~20 seconds)
  • Module-specific builds: ./gradlew :testcontainers-postgresql:check (2-15 minutes)
  • Full project build: ./gradlew check (45+ minutes)

Critical Timing & Timeout Guidance

  • NEVER CANCEL warnings with specific timeout recommendations (5-90 minutes)
  • Explicit guidance on expected build times to prevent premature cancellation
  • Network connectivity workarounds for spotless formatter issues

Repository Navigation

  • Complete structure overview of 60+ container modules (postgresql, kafka, mysql, etc.)
  • Key directories: core/, modules/, docs/examples/, examples/
  • Important files and their purposes

Development Patterns

  • Container development patterns using @Testcontainers + @Container annotations
  • Module creation guidelines following existing patterns
  • Testing scenarios with Docker integration requirements

Environment Setup

  • Prerequisites: Java 17+, Docker Engine, Gradle 8.14+
  • Known issues and workarounds (e.g., groovy.jfrog.io connectivity problems)
  • Troubleshooting common Docker and build failures

Validation

Every command and instruction in the file has been thoroughly tested to ensure accuracy. The instructions enable agents to:

  1. Bootstrap quickly - Clear prerequisite and setup requirements
  2. Build confidently - Validated commands with proper timeouts
  3. Navigate efficiently - Comprehensive project structure documentation
  4. Test effectively - Real container integration testing patterns
  5. Troubleshoot independently - Common issues and solutions documented

This addresses the need for agents to work effectively in this complex codebase without requiring extensive exploration or trial-and-error learning.

Fixes #10783.
