Stacked on #2774 (Arlington validation, branch feat/arlington-validation, which already carries its corpus commits). Until that merges, this PR's diff includes it; the new work is the last two commits (ff1d5ef and 8f84e00, a test fix for the Windows runner).

What this changes

Standards ▸ Validate structure ran pdfcraft_arlington::validate on the UI thread. The largest file in the pinned pdf.js corpus (bug1978317.pdf, 163,867 objects) takes 1.4 s to validate in the dev profile, so the window froze for that long. Larger real-world files would freeze it for longer. The check now runs on a worker thread. While it runs, the dialog shows a spinner and "Checking the structure… n objects so far".

  • Cancel stops the check. If it was a Check again, the report it was going to replace stays; otherwise the dialog says the check was cancelled.
  • Close leaves the check running. Opening the dialog again shows how far it has got, or its report.
  • An edit made meanwhile makes the running check out of date: it is told to stop and the document as it is now is checked instead. As before, the report is kept until the document changes.
  • set dialog structure (control channel) now gets a check too. The dialog starts one itself whenever it has no report of the document as it is now. Before, that path showed "This document can't be checked" until the menu command ran.

How the work is split:

  • crates/arlington: new validate_with_progress(src, opts, &mut dyn FnMut(usize) -> bool) -> Option<Report>.
    • Every 512 work items the walk passes the number of objects checked so far; returning false stops it, and then there is no report.
    • validate is the same walk with a callback that always returns true.
    • The Source trait is unchanged.
  • crates/engine/src/structure.rs: Document::structure_job(&Options) -> Option<StructureJob> takes a snapshot of the object graph by cloning the pdfcraft_cos::Document.
    • The clone is cheap: the file's bytes, the xref index and the bounded parse caches are shared Arcs, and only the unsaved-edit overlay and the trailer are copied.
    • Later edits don't reach the snapshot. Undo already relies on this: its snapshots are such clones.
    • StructureJob::run(progress) builds the page map and validates the snapshot on the worker, under guard, the way OptimizeJob runs.
  • crates/ui-egui/src/structure_ui.rs: the job runs the way Word count's worker does: an mpsc channel, a cancel flag and a progress counter.
    • It runs inline before the first frame, with run_inline (tests) and on wasm.
    • The cache key is the same as before: the DocId plus a Weak pointer to the working file.
    • Possible outcomes: a report, unreadable, cancelled, or failed (a worker that stopped without a report, or a thread that couldn't be spawned).
  • Three new labels in all 22 catalogs (each in that catalog's existing word for "check"). The 22 catalog hashes in ATTRIBUTION.toml are updated.

How you verified it

All through _tools/cargo-q, --profile low-disk -j 2, scoped to the three crates touched:

  • cargo fmt --check
  • cargo clippy --package pdfcraft-arlington --package pdfcraft-engine --package pdfcraft-ui-egui --all-targets -- -D warnings: clean
  • Tests:
    • pdfcraft-arlington: all 39 pass.
    • pdfcraft-engine --lib structure: 8 pass.
    • pdfcraft-ui-egui --lib -- structure i18n spanish: 121 pass, among them every catalog's coverage test and the four structure_ui tests.
    • pdfcraft-ui-egui --test structure: 3 pass.
  • cargo xtask layers (38 crates, no violations), cargo xtask assets (ok, with the 22 recomputed catalog hashes), cargo xtask parity

New tests:

  • arlington::tests::progress_is_reported_and_stops_the_walk:
    • Over 5,000 pages, progress is reported along the way, rising and below the final total, and the report is unchanged.
    • The first false stops the walk with no report, after fewer than 1,000 of the 5,000+ indirect objects have been visited. A whole walk visits them all.
  • engine::structure::tests::a_job_checks_its_snapshot_off_the_session:
    • A job made before an edit and run on another thread reports the document as it was before the edit.
    • A job made after the edit reports the edit.
    • The job is Send + 'static, and a false from the callback gives Ok(None).
  • ui-egui structure_ui::tests: these use a held job, which reports 42 objects and then waits for the test to release it.
    • the_window_goes_on_while_the_check_runs: frames keep running while the check is held, the count shows, Close leaves the check running and the command shows it again, and the released report arrives by itself.
    • cancel_stops_the_check_and_keeps_the_last_report: Cancel stops the worker and the dialog says so. Check again then reports. A cancelled Check again leaves that report in place.
    • an_edit_while_checking_starts_over: the old check is told to stop, and the report equals a synchronous check of the edited document.
  • ui-egui/tests/structure.rs:
    • execute("standards.structure") returns with a check running and no report yet; the report arrives on later frames.
    • Running the command again doesn't check again.
    • New: the_structure_dialog_opened_by_the_control_channel_checks_too.

Tests. Every new test was seen failing with its part of the fix reverted (four reverts applied together, each aimed at different tests):

Revert Tests that went red
The walk never calls progress progress_is_reported_and_stops_the_walk ("progress is said along the way: []"), a_job_checks_its_snapshot_off_the_session ("cancelled")
StructureState::start always runs the work on the calling thread the_window_goes_on_while_the_check_runs ("frames waited for the check: 10.0 s"), cancel_stops_the_check_and_keeps_the_last_report, an_edit_while_checking_starts_over
validate_structure checks synchronously validate_structure_lists_findings_and_turns_to_their_page ("a check is running")
The dialog doesn't start a check itself the_structure_dialog_opened_by_the_control_channel_checks_too ("the dialog started a check")

Second commit (Windows CI). the_window_goes_on_while_the_check_runs looked for "42 objects so far" three frames after starting the check. The worker reports that count only once its thread runs, which took longer on the Windows runner. The test now waits for the count by state, like the module's other waits. Delaying the worker 400 ms before its first count reproduces the CI failure with the old test ("No nodes found matching the query"), and the new test passes with that delay and without it.

Never-crash

  • No new unwrap/expect/panic!/unreachable!/todo! outside tests. The worker's send ignores a dialog that has moved on, and a thread that can't be spawned is reported in the dialog.
  • No input-derived indexing; the progress counter is a wrapping_add checked with is_multiple_of.
  • No unsafe.
  • A panic in the validator comes back as an error through guard, so the worker always reports back. A worker that disappears anyway shows as "The check stopped unexpectedly".

Provenance

  • No assets; catalog entries are contributor-original translations
  • No fonts, no GPL/AGPL code, nothing read from another implementation

Security

  • No new paths, network access or control-channel surface. set dialog structure existed before; it now gets a check like the command does.

Parity and reach

  • core.arlington-validation stays partial. Its notes say the dialog checks on a worker thread, and four of the new tests join the evidence.
  • Headless: structure_validate and pdfcraft-cli validate still call the synchronous Document::validate_structure. A headless caller has no window to keep responsive.
  • crates/arlington/README.md documents validate_with_progress. ROADMAP.md has a progress-log line.

Anything a reviewer should look at first

  • Close keeps the check running. Word count cancels when its dialog closes. Here, closing lets someone start a long check and go on working, since the dialog is modal. Opening the dialog again picks the check up. Only one check runs at a time: a check of another document replaces it.
  • The snapshot shares the editor's bounded parse cache. A large check evicts the editor's working set, as the synchronous check already did. The cos docs say this costs only re-parsing. A cos pub fn returning a clone with private caches (like the crate-private object_reader) would avoid even that; it was left out to keep this change out of crates/cos.

core.arlington-validation, now partial. Standards > Validate structure, the
structure_validate tool and `pdfcraft-cli validate` check the document as it
is now (unsaved edits included) against the Arlington PDF Model, the PDF
Association's machine-readable form of ISO 32000-2 (Apache-2.0).

- crates/arlington: new standalone L0 crate behind a Source trait. It walks
the object graph from the trailer and picks each linked object's type from
its fixed values, special-case rules and keys. It checks required keys
(with inherited page attributes), types, allowed values and fn:Eval rules,
direct/indirect rules, newer and deprecated keys and values, special-case
rules, and name and number trees. 25 of the model's 45 predicate kinds are
evaluated; the rest are counted as not evaluated, never guessed. Bounded by
a seen-set and depth, object and finding caps; property-tested.
- data/arlington.tsv: the model's tsv/latest at d37f4c8b, joined by the new
`cargo xtask arlington --from <checkout>` and pinned by a SHA-256 tree
digest. Attributed in ATTRIBUTION.toml; the model's notice is in NOTICE.
- Engine adapter over the cos document, command standards.structure and its
catalog item, the automation tool, the CLI subcommand (fails on errors),
and a dialog whose results list turns to a finding's page and flashes its
annotation. Labels in all 22 catalogs; the findings' wordings in Spanish,
  Lithuanian and Vietnamese.
- Parity entry with evidence, gap 22, pdf-spec-parity, the M2 row and the
  progress log.
core.arlington-validation. Running `pdfcraft-cli validate` over the pinned
pdf.js corpus (970 readable files) found 700 of 2,348 errors and warnings
to be the validator's own, in five places. Each has a synthetic regression
test, seen failing before its fix:

- Type selection: the highest-scoring candidate won even when the object
contradicted it, so a widget merged with its text field (more keys in
common with AnnotFreeText) or a form XObject was reported as fitting none
of its types. A contradicted candidate is now out; only when every one is
contradicted is the object reported (388 warnings).
- Repeating sets with optional members: a structure element's /A and /C
hold attribute objects or class names, each optionally followed by a
revision number (`0*` required, `1*` not). Elements were matched by
position; an optional member that doesn't fit is now skipped, and only a
set whose members are all required has to come whole (74 errors).
- A field's /DA (and /Q) inherit, at the end of the /Parent chain, from the
  interactive form dictionary's document-wide default (8 errors).
- Version cascades: once a key is reported as newer than the file, the keys
of what it leads to ("Length in Metadata is from PDF 1.4") are not
reported again up to that version; a key newer still is (228 warnings).
- A value takes the alternative whose format it has: an annotation's /M is
`date;string-text`, so a string that is no date is text (1 warning).
core.arlington-validation stays partial. Its notes now give the corpus run:
700 of 2,348 findings (30%, in 67 files) were the validator's false
positives and are fixed; 1,852 remain, none known to be the validator's.
Three groups come from the model itself (form XObject /Resources required
in every version, AnnotPopup /Parent without AnnotPolyLine, two-number
Border dash arrays). The largest file, 163,867 objects, validates in 1.4 s
on the UI thread. Three of the new tests join the evidence.
Standards > Validate structure ran pdfcraft_arlington::validate on the UI thread, freezing the
window for the 1.4 s the largest pdf.js corpus file (163,867 objects) takes, and longer on
larger files.

- arlington: validate_with_progress tells the caller how many objects are checked every 512
work items and stops when the caller says so (no report). validate is the same walk with an
always-true callback; the Source trait is unchanged.
- engine: Document::structure_job snapshots the object graph, a pdfcraft_cos::Document clone
(the file's bytes, xref index and bounded parse caches are shared Arcs; only the unsaved-edit
overlay and the trailer are copied), and StructureJob::run validates it anywhere, under guard,
like OptimizeJob. Later edits don't reach the snapshot.
- ui-egui: the dialog runs the job the way Word count runs its worker (mpsc, a cancel flag and a
progress count; inline before the first frame, in tests and on the web). It counts the objects
checked; Cancel stops the check and keeps a report it was to replace (Check again); Close
leaves it running; an edit meanwhile starts it over. The report is still kept until the
document changes. The dialog starts a check itself when it has no report of the document as
it is now, so the control channel's `set dialog structure` gets one too (it used to show
"can't be checked" until the command ran).
- Three new labels in all 22 catalogs; ATTRIBUTION.toml catalog hashes updated.
- Tests: progress and cancel in arlington and the engine job (snapshot isolation, Send, run on
another thread); in the UI, a held job shows frames going on, the count, Close, Cancel and an
edit meanwhile; the structure kittest checks that the command returns before the report and
that `set dialog structure` checks. Each new test was seen failing with its part of the fix
  reverted.
the_window_goes_on_while_the_check_runs looked for "42 objects so far"
three frames after starting the check. The worker reports that count
once its thread runs, which took longer than that on the Windows CI
runner. The test now waits for the count by state, as the module's other
waits do.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 5ee6f

Structure validation is broadly sound and mergeable with small follow-ups. pdfcraft-cli validate can report success for an invalid file when its output is piped to a reader that stops early. One UI test has a timing check that may fail intermittently on slow CI. The parity document shows two conflicting header lines.

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 5ee6f

Structure checking can amplify a crafted document into excessive memory use, potentially terminating the application or command. Read-only access and document-version checks protect document integrity, but do not contain this availability risk.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · inferred: The new validator's resource budget excludes pending traversal work. Tree children are enqueued before duplicate suppression, while max_objects limits only visited objects. A crafted name tree whose distinct nodes share the same indirect Kids array can create quadratic queue growth from a comparatively small object graph. Checking that document through the CLI, automation, or UI can therefore exhaust memory in the hosting process despite the advertised traversal limits.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated attack surface is attacker-authored PDF structure selected for checking by a user or an automation caller with access to an open document. Excessive validation allocation affects the hosting process and can therefore affect other work in that process. The inspected entrypoints do not establish additional tenant, network, secret or privileged-service reachability.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — Catalog Names entries reach name-tree traversal. If a root references n distinct child dictionaries and those children share an indirect Kids array containing the same n references, each child appends that array before queued duplicates are visited. Pending work can grow quadratically while visited objects remain below max_objects. Depth limits, per-node element limits and the seen-set terminate traversal eventually, but do not prevent the intervening memory amplification.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The automation tool is registered as read-only, requires an existing session document ID, and accepts no external path selector. Its handler validates typed options, caps requested findings per severity, and delegates to the engine without opening another resource or mutating the document.
  • observed — Snapshot ownership and document-version fencing separate background validation from live editing. Cancellation preserves a previous report only for the same document version, and subsequent report access still checks that version.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Background execution improves responsiveness but is not a resource-isolation boundary. Cancellation is checked every 512 dequeued work items, not during tree-child expansion or adapter initialization. Superseded workers can overlap until they observe cancellation, adding pressure when expensive checks are repeatedly replaced.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Enforce a pending-work or allocation budget before enqueueing, with queue-aware duplicate suppression that preserves required validation context. Report budget exhaustion as incomplete validation. Use bounded background scheduling with a latest-request policy, and observe cancellation within expensive initialization and expansion loops rather than relying only on dequeue intervals.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

A broken pipe can make validate exit with success for an invalid file.

validate documents that it "fails on errors". Line 217 writes the report with stdout_line(...)? before the validity check. A large report is one long JSON line. If the reader closes the pipe early (for example | head -c 200), the write returns CliError::Stdout(BrokenPipe). main maps that error to ExitCode::SUCCESS. The process then exits 0 even when report.errors > 0. A script that uses set -o pipefail sees success for a broken file.

Decide the exit status before the write. Then report the validation failure even when the write fails with a broken pipe.

In the validate flow, determine the result from report.is_valid() before calling
stdout_line, then ensure a BrokenPipe while writing the JSON does not replace a
validation failure with success. Preserve other stdout errors and return success
only when the report is valid and output succeeds.

Remove the 5-second wall-clock assertion from this test.

until already waits up to 20 s for the worker's first count. Line 474 then requires that count within 5 s of begun. On a loaded CI runner, thread start and the first frames can take more than 5 s. The test then fails even though the UI did not block.

hold calls start(.., inline: false) directly. The work therefore always runs on a spawned thread, so the timing check proves nothing beyond what until proves. To show that the UI thread did not block, assert structure_checking().is_some() right after hold returns. That check uses state, not time.

Based on learnings: "Tests should be deterministic: avoid reliance on real timing, sleep-based synchronization … since these cause flaky CI failures."

Remove the 5-second elapsed-time assertion and its `Instant::now()` timing from
the test around `hold`. Immediately after `hold` returns, assert that
`h.state().structure_checking().is_some()` to verify the check remains held off
the UI thread; keep the existing `until` wait for the first count.

Replace the old header line instead of adding a second one.

Line 3 adds a new > **Last reviewed:** … **Last updated:** … header. The old header on line 4 is still there. The document now has two header lines with different dates and different change descriptions (2026-10-15 Arlington and 2026-10-14 §12.4.4). The other parity docs, such as docs/gaps.md line 3, use one header line. Readers and any tooling that reads this header see conflicting metadata. Delete line 4. The §12.4.4 change is already in the revision history on line 135.

Remove the older duplicate metadata header from the document so only the updated
Arlington header remains; preserve the §12.4.4 entry in the revision history.
