Executive Summary

  • Automate serialized SemVer candidate releases from unprocessed squash merges on main, promoting only after digest-pinned Podman and KinD E2E pass.
  • Run tests and lint on PRs; build the image without pushing only for same-repository PR branches. Keep registry-backed E2E in the post-merge release workflow.

Detailed Implementation Summary

  • Add release metadata, ordered merge-cursor helpers, explicit build/push contracts, and guarded promotion.
  • Add .github/workflows/test.yml for Python and shell tests; its local image build is restricted to trusted same-repository PRs and never pushes.
  • Add .github/workflows/lint.yml and make lint using pinned Ruff and shell syntax checks.
  • Replace the unavailable Agent Swarm MCP release wheel with its pinned source revision, and set up writable OpenCode home/config paths in the image.
  • Document release setup and behavior in the README and architecture guide.

Verification passed: 19 pytest tests, make lint, 41 LSP version-pinning checks, standalone provider-secret tests, shell syntax checks, workflow YAML validation, and git diff --check. Built localhost/opencode:acm-47609-build-check locally without pushing; a container smoke probe confirmed UID 1000, writable OpenCode config, OpenCode 1.18.33 startup, and MCP command startup. Registry-backed Podman/KinD E2E remains post-merge.

Repository Quay Actions settings have been configured. The workflow also requires anonymous pulls and permission for Actions to push release metadata to protected main, if branch protection is enabled.

Jira: https://redhat.atlassian.net/browse/ACM-47609

Checklist

  • Tests and lint pass
  • Local image build and runtime smoke pass without pushing
  • Quay Actions settings configured

Co-authored with Red Hat Agentic SDLC AI Agents.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Releases are automated for changes merged into the main branch. Candidate images are tested in standalone containers and a KinD cluster, audited, and signed before promotion to latest.
    • Builds and pushes support configurable registries and tags, optional digest recording, and pinned Agent Swarm MCP source revisions.
    • Automated style, test, and security checks run on pull requests and main-branch updates. Trusted pull requests can receive local image builds without publishing.
  • Documentation
    • Added guidance on automated releases, required setup, and local build and test commands.

Add serialized SemVer candidate builds, digest-based Podman and KinD verification, guarded latest promotion, release metadata, tests, and docs.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The change adds automated image releases from pending merged pull requests. It builds versioned candidates, validates each candidate by digest, signs tested candidates, and promotes them with release metadata. It also adds release helpers, CI and security workflows, tests, and documentation.

Changes

Automated Image Release

Layer / File(s) Summary
Release metadata and source selection
scripts/image_release.py
Release helpers validate versions and image digests, write digest metadata, and select merged PR sources in first-parent order.
Candidate build inputs
Makefile, scripts/build.sh, scripts/push.sh, containerfiles/Containerfile.agents, tests/test_image_release.py
Build and push commands accept configurable registry, tag, defaults, and digest-file settings. Agent Swarm MCP is staged from a pinned source revision and installed from source. Tests check build and push parameters and defaults.
Candidate publication and promotion
scripts/publish_image.py, .github/workflows/publish-image.yml, VERSION, IMAGE_PUBLISH_STATE, tests/test_image_release.py
The publisher builds candidates and commits version, digest, and source-cursor metadata. The workflow audits, tests, and signs candidate digests before promotion. Promotion verifies the pushed digest before publishing metadata.
Digest-pinned runtime validation
scripts/e2e_container.py, scripts/e2e_kind_pod.py, .github/workflows/publish-image.yml, tests/test_image_release.py
The E2E scripts validate digest-pinned images in a standalone container and a KinD Pod. Checks include runtime identity, filesystem permissions, required commands, and service health or Pod completion.
CI checks and release contract
.github/workflows/lint.yml, .github/workflows/test.yml, .github/workflows/security.yml, Makefile, tests/test_image_release.py, README.md, docs/ARCHITECTURE.md
Workflows run tests, lint, trusted-PR image scans, Semgrep, and dependency review. Tests cover release helpers, publication, promotion, E2E inputs, and workflow configuration. Documentation describes release behavior and local commands.

Implementation Summary

  • Added a serialized main-branch release workflow that processes unprocessed squash merges in order, builds patch SemVer candidates, captures immutable registry digests, and advances the release cursor only after all checks pass.
  • Added explicit CI registry/tag and digest-capture contracts to the Make targets and build/push scripts. Release builds use the pinned Agent Swarm MCP release input and do not pass GitHub or Quay credentials to build subprocesses.
  • Added standalone Podman runtime/tool/MCP/OpenCode health checks and a digest-pinned KinD Pod E2E under non-root security settings, including diagnostics and cleanup.
  • Added SemVer, digest, cursor, build/push, promotion failure/success, E2E contract, and workflow-order tests; updated README and architecture/release documentation.

Verification passed: 18 pytest tests, 41 LSP version-pinning checks, standalone provider-secret tests, shell/Python syntax checks, workflow YAML validation, and git diff --check. Live registry-backed Podman and KinD tests were not run locally; they are exercised by the workflow. Repository Quay Actions settings have been configured.

Follow-up: PR validation and local build

  • Added PR test automation for Python and shell tests, a separate PR lint workflow (make lint, pinned Ruff + shell syntax), and a trusted same-repository-only image build job that does not push. The release workflow remains push to main; Podman and KinD E2E remain post-merge.
  • The local build uncovered that the configured Agent Swarm MCP 0.1.0 wheel URL returns 404. Builds now fetch the pinned MCP source revision 292c2128164a237aa59e04b11f03630a61113639 and package only mcp-server.
  • Set HOME=/home/node and ensure the OpenCode config directories are writable for the non-root runtime.

Verification: 19 pytest tests, make lint, 41 LSP version-pinning checks, provider-secret tests, workflow YAML validation, shell syntax checks, and git diff --check passed. Built localhost/opencode:acm-47609-build-check locally with no push; a runtime probe passed as UID 1000 with OpenCode 1.18.33 and MCP startup.

🛠️ PR Fix Summary

Addressed the five CodeRabbit findings: pinned KinD to the independently sourced GitHub release digest; added keyless cosign signing of tested digests before promotion; added Semgrep SAST, dependency review, and pip-audit SCA checks; restored direct-build MCP revision fallback; and made test pin assertions read from the Makefile. The four other review threads were already marked resolved by CodeRabbit; I replied to and resolved the remaining SAST/SCA thread.

Local verification passed: make lint, 19 pytest tests, 41 LSP pinning checks, provider-secret tests, YAML and shell syntax checks, and git diff --check. The local image build/runtime smoke passed without pushing; pip-audit reported no known vulnerabilities and skipped the two internal packages because they are not on PyPI. Updated GitHub checks for head 477ec66 are running.

Reviewed current head 477ec66edc8d98516142b98e1b59060316563c0d against the stated release criteria. The serialized catch-up flow, digest-pinned candidate verification, guarded promotion, diagnostics, tests, and operating documentation are consistent with the requested behavior. Existing current-head findings were rechecked; prior actionable findings are addressed. No actionable findings.
