3. What is my relationshup to Staunch? Subcontractor vs. Employee

You guys are subcontractors, not employees.

I am leaning more towards the subcontractor model for several reasons. First of all the cool kids at envy labs do it :) I mostly like this model because of the flexibility and economic benefits.

Flexibility

  • People here value flexibility, it's one of the #1 things people talk about liking here, and I want people to be happy.
  • If you want to come to work an hour late because you needed more sleep or something that's OK (as long as you dont have appointments with clients, or team members).
  • You want to take a week or two vacation, sure, no problem, just schedule it between projects.
  • You want to work 1/2 day or whole day from home, sure, so long as you can meet communication expectations with clients and team members.

Economics

  • I like the idea of people making economic choices for themselves and not relying on government to manage them. With subcontractor relationships you can be more creative with how you pay taxes.
  • I can pass through more money to you guys with less margin for saving to pay you guys for unproductive time, you guys make more money and can see the direct benefit of longer term contracts even if they are more boring.
  • You choose your own financial risk / fun ratio, you want more long term stable work we have those contracts, you want to have more short term fun stuff, go for it, and take the risk.
  • You choose your own engagement with the company and balance your own lifestyle goals.

Contracts

We are still drafting the subcontractor agreement. Making an international multinational company is a bit complex, lots of weird choices to make about where the companies are (US and Colombia) and what are the advantages of contracting from what country, and in what form. Contracts expected by early Feb 2013.

Would you prefer to be an employee?

If you would prefer to have some advantages of an employee let Todd know, he is open minded. We can discuss the option.
