# Conformance

## Verbal forms for expressions of provisions

In this document, the following verbal forms are used to express the level of
normativity of a provision:

- "shall" and "shall not" indicate a requirement;
- "should" and "should not" indicate a recommendation;
- "may" indicates a permission;
- "can" and "cannot" indicate a possibility or a capability.

Conformance to this document is determined by its requirements alone.
Recommendations and permissions do not affect conformance.

These verbal forms are written in lower case, and follow the conventions of the
ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2, [Clause 7][verbal].
