Camera plugin: cameras fail to load — mixed content / HTTPS restriction #379

Closed as not planned

Description

Source: User bug report (skynet bot, #features-bugs-reports, Jul 20 2026)

Description:
The camera plugin's live feeds fail to load on HTTPS deployments. User description: "the cams dont work because my https is to secure".

Likely cause:
When WWV is served over HTTPS, browsers block mixed content — HTTP camera streams or HTTP iframe embeds will be silently refused by the browser. This is a common issue with camera plugins that embed external stream URLs that don't support HTTPS.

Suggested investigation:

  • Audit all camera stream URLs in the plugin's data source for HTTPS support
  • For streams that only serve HTTP, consider:
    • Proxying through the WWV backend to upgrade to HTTPS
    • Using a CesiumJS video element with HTTPS proxy
    • Filtering to only HTTPS-capable streams when running on HTTPS
  • Alternatively, detect the deployment protocol and surface a clear error message explaining the mixed-content block

Note: This may overlap with #368 (static YouTube videos showing instead of live streams) — the HTTPS issue could be causing fallback behaviour or vice versa.
