This is a better implementation — not heavier, but significantly more complex.
Regex is incredibly hard.
This version seems to perform only marginaly better in my tests.
Howeever, I think it introduce a lot of pieces that will probably be needed.
Also, it's a mess right now and will need cleanup, with comments added for each function.
POSIX is simple; adding Bash features on top of it is insane.
I’ve reached my limit and will need help beyond this point — but this is a seriously good start.
My brain feels like mush.
