…underlying data is the same. In the future it would make sense to just have a core object -- a buffer owner which can then pass out writers and readers. this would allow the underlying data to stay and then the readers and writers could be moved

split implementation to allow for multiple "backend" storage types including external buffer, e.g. SDRAM on baremetal hardware
