Description:
The database backend isn't used in production and there are no plans to add a new backend to this codebase. Removing the backend would simplify the codebase and reduce the amount of lines in this repo. As there would only be one backend, the abstract concept of a backend should also be removed.

#347 should be tackled first as the OpenAPI docs currently use the DB backend.
