Summary

Adds an opt-in Match stream resolution to window size setting (Settings → Display). When the stream window is resized, Moonlight asks a compatible host to switch to the window's pixel size, and it rebuilds the decoder whenever the host's stream resolution changes. Closes #103 and follows up on #84.

How it works

  • Capability. The feature turns on only when the host sets LI_FF_CLIENT_RESOLUTION_CHANGE (0x400) in the session's feature flags. The host computes this per session and folds in all of its preconditions. Moonlight reads it once each connection is up, including after a reconnect. LI_RESOLUTION_CHANGE_ERR_UNSUPPORTED turns the feature off for that connection.
  • Host reports. The host reports its display size (0x5507) once at stream start and again on every display change. It always encodes at the negotiated size at stream start, and its stream follows its display only while it streams that display 1:1 (in either orientation). So:
    • The first report of each connection is only recorded.
    • A later report changes the stream size only if the host was streaming 1:1 just before it.
  • Requests. Each SDL_WINDOWEVENT_SIZE_CHANGED restarts a 400 ms debounce. Once the size settles, Moonlight computes a target:
    • In a window, the pixel size (SDL_GetWindowSizeInPixels). In fullscreen, the configured stream resolution.
    • Either way it is rounded down to even. Sizes outside 256–16384 are not requested, because the host drops them without replying.
    • Nothing is sent when the target equals the current stream size or repeats an unanswered request.
    • Nothing is sent while the host isn't streaming 1:1, because it ignores requests then. The match is retried on the next host report.
    • If the window is minimized, the match waits for SDL_WINDOWEVENT_RESTORED. A plain minimize/restore with no pending match sends nothing, so host-initiated changes are never reverted.
    • One request is outstanding at a time. Moonlight waits for the host's answer, or 5 s since ignored requests get no reply, before comparing the window again.
  • Applying. The resolutionChanged callback is posted to the main thread. On a stream size change, Moonlight queues SDL_RENDER_DEVICE_RESET, then destroys the old decoder under m_DecoderLock, so the old decoder never decodes a frame at the new size. drSubmitDecodeUnit() drops frames until the existing reset path builds the new decoder and requests an IDR frame. No reset logic is duplicated.
  • Input. The reset path syncs SdlInputHandler's stream dimensions from the active video size, so absolute mouse, touch, and pen mapping stays correct after a resolution change and after a reconnect.
  • Connection boundaries.
    • Reports left over from an old connection are filtered out alongside stale rumble events.
    • A report that arrives while a reconnect is still starting is handled once the new connection is up, as that connection's first report.
    • After a reconnect, Moonlight matches the window again.

Commits

  1. chore(deps): pins moonlight-common-c to the AsafMah fork's integration/client-resolution branch (mic + Add LiSendResolutionChangeRequest for client-driven dynamic resolution moonlight-common-c#10 + 是否能支持 proxy #13). .gitmodules points at the fork only until those changes land on mic.
  2. feat(streaming): the feature, with zh_CN/zh_TW strings.

Dependency

Testing

  • Windows x64 release build (MSVC 2022, Qt 6.12.0, same as CI) of both commits.
  • The cpp-format gate (clang-format 21.1.8 on changed lines) and scripts/qmllint-check.sh.
  • lrelease for the zh_CN/zh_TW strings, and the settings_localization test.
  • Not tested at runtime yet. Still needs a windowed resize against a Foundation host with the feature enabled, including a HiDPI display, a fullscreen round trip, minimize/restore, and a reconnect.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added an optional setting to match stream resolution to the window size. When supported by the host, resizing the window adjusts the stream resolution; returning to fullscreen restores the configured resolution.
    • Added Simplified and Traditional Chinese translations for the new setting.

Point moonlight-common-c at the AsafMah fork's integration/client-resolution
branch (mic b91c7cd + qiin2333/moonlight-common-c#10 + qiin2333#13). It adds
LiSendResolutionChangeRequest() and LI_FF_CLIENT_RESOLUTION_CHANGE, and
hardens control-stream sends against concurrent teardown.

Temporary: switch the URL back to qiin2333/moonlight-common-c once those
changes land on mic.

Add an opt-in "Match stream resolution to window size" display setting.
When the host sets LI_FF_CLIENT_RESOLUTION_CHANGE for the session, a
settled window resize (400 ms debounce) asks the host for the window's
pixel size via LiSendResolutionChangeRequest(). Fullscreen asks for the
configured resolution again. Sizes outside the host's 256-16384 range,
the current stream size, and repeats of an unanswered request are not
sent, and LI_RESOLUTION_CHANGE_ERR_UNSUPPORTED turns the feature off for
the connection.

The host reports its display size (0x5507) at stream start and on every
display change, and only applies requests or follows its display while it
streams that display 1:1. The first report of a connection is therefore
only recorded, later reports change the stream size only if the host was
1:1, and requests are held back (and retried on the next report) while it
isn't.

On a stream size change, the old decoder is destroyed under m_DecoderLock
and the existing SDL_RENDER_DEVICE_RESET path rebuilds it, so the old
decoder never sees frames of the new size. The reset path also syncs the
input handler's stream dimensions, which keeps absolute mouse/touch/pen
mapping correct after a resolution change or a reconnect.

One request is outstanding at a time (answered or 5 s timeout, since the
host ignores requests silently). Host-initiated changes are not fought:
only an actual resize, or a retry of a skipped match, sends a request.
Resolution reports from a previous connection are dropped at connection
boundaries, and one received while a reconnect is starting is handled
once the new connection is up.

Closes qiin2333#103.

📝 Walkthrough

The display settings add a persistent option to match stream resolution to window size. During a session, Moonlight can request supported resolutions from the host and apply host-reported changes to the decoder and input dimensions.

Changes: Window-matched stream resolution

Layer / File(s) Summary
Preference and display setting
app/settings/streamingpreferences.h, app/settings/streamingpreferences.cpp, app/gui/settings/DisplaySettingsPage.qml, app/languages/qml_zh_CN.ts, app/languages/qml_zh_TW.ts
Adds the resolutionMatchWindow preference, loads it as false when unset, saves it, and exposes a desktop-only toggle with translated descriptions.
Session resolution matching and host reports
moonlight-common-c/moonlight-common-c, app/streaming/session.h, app/streaming/session.cpp, app/streaming/input/input.h, app/streaming/input/input.cpp
Adds debounced, gated resolution matching and host-report handling. Session updates the decoder and input dimensions, and handles resolution reports during reconnect. The moonlight-common-c submodule reference changes.

Explanation

Issue [#103] requires requests only for enabled, supported, windowed sessions. The implementation satisfies the opt-in setting, capability gate, debounce, physical-pixel sizing, even dimensions, limits, request tracking, host reports, decoder reset, and input-dimension update. However, processWindowResolutionMatch() selects m_StreamConfig when isStreamingWindowFullscreen() is true and can then call LiSendResolutionChangeRequest(). This permits a resolution request in fullscreen mode.

Resolution

Restrict processWindowResolutionMatch() to windowed mode before it sends a request. Cancel or clear pending matching state when fullscreen starts so a queued deadline cannot send a fullscreen request.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The fullscreen resolution-request path is outside the scope of issue [#103], which limits matching to windowed sessions and treats fullscreen as excluded. The other reviewed changes, including the shared API reference, setting, translations, decoder handling, input synchronization, and reconnect handling, support the issue objective.

Resolution

Remove the fullscreen request behavior from this pull request, or track fullscreen resolution restoration as a separate linked issue and keep this feature windowed-only.

Update the stale moonlight-common-c documentation.

The pinned commit and LiSendResolutionChangeRequest API are available from AsafMah/moonlight-common-c. However, docs/architecture.md still identifies qiin2333/moonlight-common-c and its mic branch. Update the entry to document the configured remote and the integration/client-resolution branch containing the pinned commit.
