Summary

send_message always sent text with format: plain, so Markdown that an LLM writes, such as **bold**, reached people as literal markers. It now takes an optional format option: plain (the default, so existing workflows send what they sent before) or markdown, passed to Photon for the text, alone or ahead of images. The option comes right before the text in the tool's form, and any other value is refused before an image is uploaded.

Photon's documentation describes Markdown as CommonMark with GFM tables and strikethrough, rendered with each channel's own formatting where the channel has it (Telegram's HTML formatting, for example) and sent as readable plain text elsewhere. Photon's API rejects HTML inside Markdown (markdown_html_forbidden). The option's descriptions and the READMEs say so.

Closes ENG-4376

Example

A workflow's send_message node, or an Agent calling the tool, sets:

{
  "space_id": "pho_spc_…",
  "sender_id": "pho_usr_…",
  "type": "text",
  "format": "markdown",
  "text": "**Order 1042** has shipped. Track it with `1Z999`."
}

Photon receives "content": {"type": "text", "format": "markdown", "text": "**Order 1042** …"}; before this change the same text went out as "format": "plain", with the asterisks and backticks shown as written. Without format, the request is unchanged.

Testing

  • Unit tests: 21 pass, including a new one for Markdown alone and as the text of an image message, and a case refusing an unsupported format before any request. ruff check and ruff format --check with ruff 0.15.0 pass.
  • On Photon staging, through the plugin's own PhotonClient: Markdown text sent from the project's Telegram bot into a test space was accepted (dispatched, format: markdown) and reached delivered.
  • Markdown with an image could not be checked there: that Telegram space answers 422 UNSUPPORTED_CONTENT to text with an image in plain too, as feat: add the Photon tool plugin for Dify #1 recorded for Telegram and iMessage.
  • On a local Dify 1.17.1 with this branch installed: a published workflow sent the same text through two send_message nodes, plain and then markdown; both reached delivered on Telegram staging, stored with format: plain and format: markdown. That run used 2421197; with bd6d388 installed, Dify lists the parameters as space_id, type, format, text, attachments, and so on, with format defaulting to plain.

  • Earlier research reports that PNG-plus-text returned UNSUPPORTED_CONTENT on Telegram and iMessage, and that PR #1 described iMessage as rejecting text and attachments in one message. This remains relevant to the Markdown-with-image acceptance criterion, but does not establish whether Markdown-with-image delivery works; it was not reverified here. (Source: Linear · get_diff)

Explanation

The title "feat: send Markdown with send_message's format option" matches the main change. The PR adds an optional format option to send_message (plain by default, or markdown) for text-only and image-with-text messages, with docs, tests, and a shared TEXT_FORMATS constant. The title names the feature and the function, so a teammate scanning history understands the primary change. It does not mention the HTML rejection or the README updates, which are secondary details.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

ENG-4376 requires optional format support with plain as the default and markdown as the alternative for text-only and image messages. The supplied change summary reports this behavior in tools/send_message.py, validation through TEXT_FORMATS, tests for both message forms, and rejection of html. tools/send_message.yaml, README.md, and readme/README_zh_Hans.md document the option and the stated Markdown rules. The PR reports that Markdown text was accepted and delivered through Photon staging. ENG-4312 supplies parent context only.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The supplied change summary limits the changes to send_message format handling, its tool documentation, README documentation, the format constant, and related tests. These changes support ENG-4376. No unrelated parent-issue or sibling-issue work is identified.

ENG-4376 Send Markdown text from the tool plugin's send_message

The tool plugin's send_message in photon-hq/dify always sends text with format: plain, so Markdown that an LLM writes, such as **bold**, reaches people as literal asterisks. Photon's Send a Message takes a format for text content, and Photon's documentation describes markdown: CommonMark with GFM tables and strikethrough, rendered with each channel's own formatting where it has one (for example Telegram's HTML formatting) and sent as readable plain text elsewhere. Photon rejects HTML inside Markdown (markdown_html_forbidden).

Done when:

  • send_message has an optional format option, plain (the default) or markdown, which applies to its text, alone or with images.
  • A Markdown message sent through Photon staging is accepted and delivered.
  • The READMEs describe the option.

  • The merged PR #1’s staging history distinguishes standalone content from mixed messages: Telegram text and standalone PNG delivery succeeded, while PNG-plus-text returned UNSUPPORTED_CONTENT on Telegram and iMessage. This supports treating Markdown-with-image delivery as channel-dependent. (Source: Linear · get_diff)
  • PR #6’s complete thread lookup returned no actionable review findings or drafts; CodeRabbit was still processing changes, and Copilot could not review because of quota limits. (Source: Linear · get_diff_threads)

Only plain and markdown are accepted, so another value stops before any image is uploaded instead of leaving uploads behind when Photon refuses the message.
