Overview

What is the feature?

Two related changes tied to GQL-161:

  1. Query depth limiting. GraphQL queries (including introspection queries) can now be rejected if they nest too deeply, protecting the API from overly expensive or abusive queries.
  2. Granule counts on collections. Clients can request a granule count for each collection via a new includeGranuleCounts argument, which populates a new granuleCount field. This lets MMT get counts directly instead of making a separate granule request per collection. as seen here https://github.com/nasa/mmt/blob/main/static/src/js/operations/queries/getCollections.js#L15

What is the Solution?

Query depth guard

  • Added the @escape.tech/graphql-armor-max-depth dependency.
  • In src/graphql/handler.js, added validationRules to the ApolloServer config:
    • MaxIntrospectionDepthRule from graphql limits nesting in introspection queries (introspection is enabled).
    • maxDepthRule limits query depth to MAX_QUERY_DEPTH (defaults to 8).
    • propagateOnRejection: false with an onReject handler reports a GraphQLError through context.reportError instead of throwing, because a thrown error escapes validate() and Apollo returns a 500.
  • Added the MAX_QUERY_DEPTH environment variable to cdk/graphql/lib/graphql-stack.ts (default '8') and passed it through in bin/deploy-bamboo.sh. largest depth seen was in graphql at 6

Granule counts

  • Added includeGranuleCounts: Boolean to the CollectionsInput and CollectionInput types in src/types/collection.graphql.
  • Added granuleCount: Int to the Collection type.
  • Added include_granule_counts to the allowed query parameters in src/cmr/concepts/collection.js (both the keyed parameter list and the array of CMR-passthrough parameters) so the argument is forwarded to CMR.

** Bumps packages withnpm audit fix and bumps cdk packages **

Moved "@dotenvx/dotenvx" into dev deps sosnyk is not triggered

Wrote https://bugs.earthdata.nasa.gov/browse/GQL-160 to handle migrating out of graphql-middleware

What areas of the application does this impact?

  • GraphQL request validation (all queries now pass through the depth rules)
  • Collection queries (collection / collections) and the Collection schema
  • CMR collection search parameter handling (src/cmr/concepts/collection.js)
  • Deployment configuration (CDK stack and Bamboo deploy script)
  • Dependencies (package.json, package-lock.json)

Testing

Reproduction steps

  • Environment for testing: <e.g. local / SIT / UAT>
  • Collection to test with: <collection concept ID, e.g. C1234567890-PROVIDER>

Granule counts

  1. Run the following query:
   query {
     collections(params: { includeGranuleCounts: true, limit: 5 }) {
       items {
         conceptId
         granuleCount
       }
     }
   }
  1. Verify each collection returns an integer granuleCount.
  2. Run the same query without includeGranuleCounts and verify granuleCount is null.

Query depth guard

  1. Run a deeply nested query that loops between collections and granules:
   {
     collections {
       items {
         granules {
           items {
             collection {
               granules {
                 items {
                   collection {
                     conceptId
                   }
                 }
               }
             }
           }
         }
       }
     }
   }
  1. Verify the response is a GraphQL validation error mentioning the depth limit (not a 500), since this query nests deeper than the default MAX_QUERY_DEPTH of 8.
  2. Run a query within the limit (e.g. the granule counts query above) and verify it succeeds as before.
  3. Set MAX_QUERY_DEPTH to a higher value (e.g. 10), restart, and verify the nested query above now passes validation.
  4. Run a deeply nested introspection query and verify it is rejected.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Collection queries can request granule counts, and collection results include the count when requested.
    • Collection searches support the include_granule_counts option.
  • Improvements
    • GraphQL queries are checked against a configurable maximum depth, set to 8 by default. Queries that exceed the limit return a GraphQL error.
    • The maximum query depth can be configured during deployment.
    • Count-only requests can use counts provided with collection results instead of requiring a separate granule lookup.

Walkthrough

The GraphQL handler now validates query and introspection depth. Deployment configuration supplies the query-depth limit. Collection queries can request granule counts, and count-only granule selections can use counts returned with collection search results.

Changes: GraphQL query-depth validation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Depth validation
src/graphql/handler.js, package.json
The handler applies query-depth and introspection-depth validation. The query-depth limit defaults to 8, and rejected checks are reported as GraphQL errors. Runtime dependencies include @escape.tech/graphql-armor-max-depth.
Depth-limit deployment configuration
bin/deploy-bamboo.sh, cdk/graphql/lib/graphql-stack.ts, cdk/graphql/package.json, cdk/graphql-docs/package.json, cdk/graphql-infrastructure/package.json
The deployment script passes MAX_QUERY_DEPTH from Bamboo. The GraphQL Lambda environment uses MAX_QUERY_DEPTH with a default of 8, and bundling specifies the root lockfile. The CDK package manifests update dependency ranges.

Collection granule counts

Layer / File(s) Summary
Count contract and selection parsing
src/types/collection.graphql, src/cmr/concepts/collection.js, src/utils/parseRequestedFields.js, src/utils/isGranuleCountOnlySelection.js, src/utils/__tests__/*
Collection inputs add includeGranuleCounts, and Collection adds the nullable granuleCount field. Request parsing identifies count-only granule selections, requests collection granule counts, and includes granuleCount in requested fields. Tests cover selection parsing and requested-field results.
Collection search and count resolution
src/datasources/collection.js, src/resolvers/collection.js, src/resolvers/__tests__/collection.test.js
Collection search merges additional parameters into its search parameters. For count-only selections, the granules resolver returns the parent collection count. Other selections continue through granule search. Tests cover both paths.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title names two changes: GraphQL query depth rules and granule counts for collections. Both are present in the changeset: handler.js adds validation rules, and the collection types, resolvers, and CMR parameter list add granuleCount and includeGranuleCounts. The title is the GQL-161 ticket prefix followed by a long, two-part phrasing, so it is not concise, but it is related to the main change and covers the primary points.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description follows the template sections: Overview (feature, solution, impacted areas), Testing (reproduction steps, attachments), and Checklist. It explains both the query depth guard and granule counts, with clear reproduction steps. Gaps: the Testing environment and collection placeholders are unfilled (<e.g. local / SIT / UAT> and <collection concept ID...>). The checklist shows that automated tests were not marked as added, though the changeset includes new test files. The documentation checkbox is also unchecked. The description also includes unrelated items (dependency bumps, the dotenvx move, and a GQL-160 note) that are not in the template but are reasonably scoped.

Resolution

Optional improvements: fill in the Testing placeholders (environment and collection concept ID). Confirm the checklist items for automated tests and unit test results, since the changeset adds test files. Consider noting the documentation status. Consider moving the dependency and dotenvx notes into a clearly labeled section.

See if we can thread this for calls such as ` collections(params: $params) {
count
items {

    granules {
      count
    }`

}
}
automatically, that way we get the performance boosts across, making this more consistent and we won't have to update MMT if we do that

I can add this. It seems a bit unnecessary to me. The only time this could be an issue is if we put in abc into bamboo but, added

Spread order lets the heuristic always win over an explicit value: additionalVariableParameters (set by parseRequestedFields based on selection shape) is spread after params, so includeGranuleCounts: false passed explicitly by a client is silently overwritten to true whenever the query selects a count-only granules { count }. Suggest only applying the heuristic default when the client didn't explicitly set it:

const fetchParams = {
...params,
...additionalVariableParameters,
...(params.includeGranuleCounts !== undefined && {
includeGranuleCounts: params.includeGranuleCounts
})
}

I feel like we should override that value if its using that count signature we need it otherwise we can't get the counts I could add a comment. I don't know what the use-case is of passing that as false and adding in the granule { counts } I could see it but, then the optimization won't really work
