model-native results. I got the following error while trying to upload:

nomenclature.exceptions.UnknownRegionError: The following region(s) are not defined in the region codelist:
 - Africa_Eastern
 - Africa_Northern
 - Africa_Southern
 - Africa_Western
 - Australia_NZ
 - BRA
 - CAN
 - _...and many more_

I assumed this was because of the hierarchies.

No, you need to import both the hierarchies and the mappings.
