The problem

Hi, PicoTTS has been working fine for ages but in the last weeks in always fails with this error in the log:
Error running pico2wave, return code: 216

Same issue, same versions, the only recent change I can find is #141182 (@lukakama Could you check if PicoTTS works for you with latest HASS?).

Looks like there's some problem with pico2wave:

homeassistant:/config# pico2wave --wave=test.wav 'This is a test'
Cannot load text analysis resource file (-40): cannot open file: /opt/picotts/share/pico/lang/en-US_ta.bin
homeassistant:/config# echo $?
216

If you symlink the directory it's looking for, it seems to work:

homeassistant:/config# ln -s /usr/local/share/pico /opt/picotts/share/pico
homeassistant:/config# pico2wave --wave=test.wav 'This is a test'
homeassistant:/config# ls -ahl test.wav 
-rw-r--r--    1 root     root       35.0K Nov  7 19:45 test.wav

Maybe it's something hardcoded in pico2wave from this configure call: https://github.com/home-assistant/docker/blob/c0e90ead907ba84d20d2c78696928aefc3863f70/Dockerfile#L80-L82? Unfortunately, I don't know enough about picotts/pico2wave to diagnose further. But maybe that'll be helpful for somebody.

It might've been from this PR: home-assistant/docker#343. As that's where the configure call was given a --prefix=/opt/picotts flag. There was a question about how to validate these changes that seems to have gone unanswered: home-assistant/docker#343 (comment).

Same issue, same versions, the only recent change I can find is #141182 (@lukakama Could you check if PicoTTS works for you with latest HASS?). Related threads: #93456 #142817

Just as a feedback, on 2025.11.1, docker image, amd64 platform, it-IT language, picotts works fine. However, when using en-US language it fails with the 216 return code.
