Summary

  • On startup, after config load and before request handling, cancel any FREE/OPEN/ASSIGNED Koji tasks owned by the logged-in EBS user so a crash or upgrade does not leave orphaned builders working on builds that will never be promoted.
  • Look up the user with getLoggedInUser(), list those tasks, then cancel them in one multicall with recurse=False (listTasks() already returns parents and children).
  • Failures other than retried network errors are logged and skipped so the daemon still comes up. Unit tests cover cancel, empty, and failure paths; the integration fake Koji client implements the new APIs.
  • Also move COPY . . in the Dockerfile below package install so image rebuilds reuse the dnf layer.

Changes for #79

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • When the service starts successfully, active Koji tasks owned by the logged-in user are checked and tasks in eligible states are canceled. Tasks that cannot be listed or canceled are skipped, allowing startup cleanup to continue without stopping the service.

Take advantage of layer caching by keeping package installs before copying any files

While I was reviewing this, I thought also about whether we should similarly have it clean up old side-tags when it starts up, but I am coming down on the side of NOT doing that, and requiring it to be a human who cleans it up. The reasoning is that if EBS somehow ended up in a crash-loop where the crash occurs after the cleanup, we might not have any way to rescue partially-completed batches manually. So I think it's probably safer if we leave the mess and clean it up periodically by hand.

(I guess we could also try to do something like "clean up all side-tags older than 30 days", but either way we should probably discuss this in a ticket first.)

Skip stale-task cancellation during --dry-run.

--dry-run sets config.dry_run, but startup still calls cancel_stale_tasks(). That function lists active tasks and invokes Koji's cancelTask through _cancel_multiple_tasks_thread. Add a guard before the call.

🐛 Suggested fix
-        await koji_builds.cancel_stale_tasks()
+ if not config.dry_run:

I missed this in my review, but this is correct: if we are in "dry-run" mode, we should skip this task entirely.

@sgallagher, thanks for confirming. When config.dry_run is true, startup should skip koji_builds.cancel_stale_tasks() entirely. The finding remains open.

Learning: In `elnbuildsync/daemon.py`, dry-run mode (`config.dry_run`) must skip the startup call to `koji_builds.cancel_stale_tasks()` entirely. Stale Koji tasks must not be canceled during a dry run.

There are still two outstanding issues:

  1. You need to check for dry-run mode before actually invoking the cancellation.
  2. We need to also have a config option or CLI flag to skip the cancellation when it's started by local_test_config.sh

Can we rename this to --enable-stale-task-cancel/--no-enable-stale-task-cancel (Click Boolean) with the default set to True?

This way, we have the option to explicitly override the flag in local_test_daemon.sh if we want to enable it for a specific run.

## 2.2.0

### Features

- **Cancel stale Koji tasks on startup.** When the daemon restarts after
a crash or upgrade, it now cancels any FREE/OPEN/ASSIGNED Koji tasks
owned by the logged-in EBS user before beginning normal request
handling. This prevents orphaned builder slots being tied up on builds
that will never be promoted. Failures are best-effort: network errors
are retried automatically; any other error is logged and skipped so
startup continues.
- **`--skip-stale-task-cancel` CLI flag.** Disables the startup task
cancellation for cases where the daemon is run with personal Kerberos
credentials (e.g. `tests/local_test_daemon.sh`), preventing accidental
cancellation of unrelated live builds. The local test daemon script
passes this flag by default.
- **Dry-run respects task cancellation.** `--dry-run` now also suppresses
the startup stale-task cancellation, consistent with its general
"no Koji mutations" semantics.
- **Dockerfile layer caching improvement.** `COPY . .` now occurs after
`dnf install`, so image rebuilds reuse the package installation layer
when only source files change.

### Testing

- Added `tests/test_koji_builds.py` with unit tests covering stale task
cancellation: successful cancel, no tasks found, user lookup failure,
task list failure, cancel failure (logged, not raised), dry-run skip,
and `--skip-stale-task-cancel` skip.
- Extended `tests/integration/fakes/fake_koji.py` with `getLoggedInUser()`
and `listTasks()` stubs so integration tests don't `AttributeError` if
the startup path is exercised.

### Documentation

- Added a **Create the secrets files** subsection to the Getting Started
guide in `README.md` with exact commands for bootstrapping
`tests/etc/secrets/`.

Let's either leave the RELEASENOTES.md update for the actual 2.2.0 release commit or else incorporate the rest of the 2.1.0 - 2.2.0 changes into it. Right now, it only captures content from this merge request, but there are quite a few other major changes since 2.1.0.

I had to get a little help from Claude for this, but apparently the negative option in a --opt/--no-opt pair gets stuffed into param.secondary_opts, so we need to check both places to ensure the option is present.
