This repository contains tentative standards for zero-knowledge virtual machines (zkVMs) and guest programs that will be used to scale Ethereum L1 execution. They can be used outside of the Ethereum ecosystem; however, we note this as the main rationale for some of the design decisions.
As zkVMs become increasingly important for Ethereum's scaling roadmap, there's a need for standardization to ensure that guest programs can run on different zkVM implementations with minor changes.
These standards are tentative and under active development.
The handbooks section contains the current criteria that the Ethereum Foundation will use to assess the readiness of zkVMs and guest programs. These criteria are in flux but converging to a final state.
