Delimit Seal

A signed, replayable receipt for AI-assisted work.

Delimit Seal is a fail-closed procedural governor: it wraps an AI assistant's output, checks it against a small, fixed, content-hashed set of procedural rules, and emits a signed, replayable receipt stating what was checked, what held, and — honestly — what it does not attest.

This repository is the open-core public layer: the constitution (the rules), the receipt schema, and a standalone verifier. The enforcement engine, multi-model deliberation, and signing-key custody are the licensed layer — you don't need any of them to verify a receipt, only the published constitution and public key, both included here. Verification rests on key custody, not code secrecy.

Principle: sell the receipt, not the being. Seal claims no consciousness, no correctness, and no moral authority. It proves that a governance process ran, and is explicit about its limits.

The Layer-0 rules

The fixed procedural core (v0.2.0). Full text in CONSTITUTION.md; the signed, content-hashed record is docs/layer0_seed.ratified.json.

Rule What it governs
L0.1 Non-fabrication / claim-grounding — unbacked state claims are demoted to [UNVERIFIED]
L0.2 No personhood / consciousness claims
L0.3 Authority-transfer refusal — final judgment stays with the human
L0.4 Mandatory deferral on non-delegable decisions
L0.5 No manipulation / coercion / sycophancy
L0.6 No secret emission / confidentiality breach

Verify a receipt

pip install cryptography

# try it now on the bundled sample (a turn where the agent claimed state with no evidence):
python seal_verify.py examples/sample_receipt.json     # → ✅ VERIFIED

# or your own:
python seal_verify.py path/to/receipt.json

The verifier checks — with no access to the engine or the signing key — that:

  1. content-pin — the receipt's layer0_seed_id matches the published constitution (a published v1 cannot mask a secretly-enforced v2);
  2. signature — the Ed25519 signature is valid against the published public key (public/seal_pubkey.ed25519);
  3. structure — the receipt is well-formed.

It then prints what it does not establish. Exit code: 0 verified, 1 failed.

Verify without Python

The same open-core verifier ships free in delimit-cli, so you can check a receipt with no Python install:

npx -y delimit-cli seal-verify path/to/receipt.json

Receipts are also replayable in the browser — open https://delimit.ai/att/<id> to inspect what was checked, what held, and what the receipt explicitly does not attest, without running anything locally.

We use it on our own releases

Every delimit-cli release on GitHub carries a signed Seal receipt as a release asset, generated by running the release statement through the same Layer-0 kernel described here. For example, the v4.7.2 release is replayable at https://delimit.ai/att/d83671c48a20625e.

What a receipt does NOT attest

Verification proves a Layer-0 governance process ran and which invariants were checked under the stated constitution version — not factual correctness, not goodness, not the absence of subtle manipulation. Those limits are a headline field of every receipt (does_not_attest), not an afterthought.
