Description

@clerk/astro 2.10.2 added an import of async_hooks without the node: prefix, which broke Cloudflare compatibility to a degree, as it requires the flag nodejs_compat instead of nodejs_als.

The error reported by wranger pages dev:

✘ [ERROR] Build failed with 1 error:

  ✘ [ERROR] Could not resolve "async_hooks"

      .wrangler/tmp/pages-mdgTQA/chunks/index_D_An565X.mjs:6211:45:
        6211 │   const { AsyncLocalStorage } = await import("async_hooks");
             ╵                                              ~~~~~~~~~~~~~

    The package "async_hooks" wasn't found on the file system but is built into node.
    - Add the "nodejs_compat" compatibility flag to your project.

Here you can see that all the other imports have a node: prefix:

❯ rg async_hooks
packages/astro/src/async-local-storage.server.ts
1:import { type AsyncLocalStorage } from 'node:async_hooks';
4:  const { AsyncLocalStorage } = await import('node:async_hooks');

packages/astro/src/global.d.ts
5:  import type { AsyncLocalStorage } from 'node:async_hooks';

packages/astro/src/async-local-storage.client.ts
1:import type { AsyncLocalStorage } from 'async_hooks';

packages/astro/src/integration/create-integration.ts
80:                external: ['node:async_hooks'],

packages/astro/tsup.config.ts
28:    external: ['astro', 'react', 'react-dom', 'node:async_hooks', '#async-local-storage', 'astro:transitions/client'],

packages/nextjs/src/server/middleware-storage.ts
1:import { AsyncLocalStorage } from 'node:async_hooks';

This PR fixes the import so that nodejs_als is sufficient again.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The import path for the AsyncLocalStorage type in the packages/astro/src/async-local-storage.client.ts file was updated from 'async_hooks' to 'node:async_hooks'. Additionally, a new changeset file .changeset/rotten-vans-leave.md was added documenting a patch update to the @clerk/astro package that fixes the import of async_hooks to improve compatibility with the Cloudflare environment. No other code or logic changes were made, and no exported or public entities were altered.

30-34: Optional: tighten the generic on the exported storage instance.

createAsyncLocalStorage() is generic, but the call site doesn’t specify a store shape, so any ends up leaking downstream.
Consider giving the store a minimal structural contract (e.g. Record<string, unknown>) to improve type-safety:

-export const authAsyncStorage = createAsyncLocalStorage();
+export const authAsyncStorage = createAsyncLocalStorage<Record<string, unknown>>();

Learning: In the Clerk JavaScript repository, contributors create intentionally empty changeset files (containing only the YAML delimiters) when a PR touches only non-published parts of the codebase (e.g., sandbox assets). This signals that no package release is required, so such changesets should not be flagged as missing content.
