📝 Walkthrough

"""

Walkthrough

The changes introduce a timeout-based mechanism for loading the Clerk JS script. The loadClerkJsScript function now accepts an optional scriptLoadTimeout parameter, defaulting to 15 seconds, and uses a polling approach to detect when Clerk is properly loaded on the window. If Clerk fails to load within the timeout, the function rejects and leaves a fallback Clerk instance to indicate an error state. The test suite for loadClerkJsScript is expanded to cover various loading, error, timeout, and race condition scenarios. Integration and telemetry code are updated to align with these changes.

25-34: Remove redundant type check

The typeof prop === 'string' check on line 26 is redundant since it's already checked on line 20.

-        if (
-          typeof prop === 'string' &&
-          (prop.startsWith('mount') ||
+        if (
+          prop.startsWith('mount') ||
packages/shared/src/__tests__/loadClerkJsScript.test.ts (2)

29-29: Use undefined assignment instead of delete

The delete operator can impact performance. Use undefined assignment as suggested by the static analyzer.

-    delete (window as any).Clerk;
+    (window as any).Clerk = undefined;

139-139: Replace fail() with standard assertion

The fail() function may not be available in all test runners. Use a more standard approach.

-      fail('Should have thrown error');
+      throw new Error('Should have thrown error');

File: .changeset/tangy-garlics-say.md:1-2
Timestamp: 2025-06-13T16:09:53.061Z
Learning: In the Clerk JavaScript repository, contributors create intentionally empty changeset files (containing only the YAML delimiters) when a PR touches only non-published parts of the codebase (e.g., sandbox assets). This signals that no package release is required, so such changesets should not be flagged as missing content.

packages/shared/src/fallbackClerk.ts (1)

8-50: Well-designed fallback implementation!

The Proxy-based approach provides excellent safety for error scenarios, ensuring that components can safely access Clerk properties without runtime errors. The pattern matching for different method types is comprehensive and thoughtful.

packages/shared/src/loadClerkJsScript.ts (3)

79-80: ESLint warnings are false positives

The ESLint warnings about using const instead of let for timeoutId and pollInterval are false positives. These variables are reassigned by setTimeout and setInterval respectively, so let is correct here.

77-128: Excellent timeout-based loading mechanism!

The polling approach with proper cleanup is more reliable than event listeners. The 100ms polling interval provides good responsiveness without excessive CPU usage.

156-159: Early return breaks function contract

The function signature indicates it returns Promise<HTMLScriptElement | null>, but this early return on line 158 breaks that contract by returning null directly instead of a rejected promise.

   if (!opts?.publishableKey) {
     errorThrower.throwMissingPublishableKeyError();
-    return null;
   }

15-19: Consider improving type safety for the mock Clerk object.

While the mock object serves its purpose, consider creating a proper type interface for better type safety and test isolation.

+interface MockClerkInstance {
+  status: 'ready' | 'loading' | 'error';
+  loaded: boolean;
+  load: jest.Mock;
+}

-const mockClerk = {
-  status: 'ready',
-  loaded: true,
-  load: jest.fn(),
-};
+const mockClerk: MockClerkInstance = {
+  status: 'ready',
+  loaded: true,
+  load: jest.fn(),
+};

39-39: Consider improving type safety in test assertions.

The use of any type could be replaced with more specific typing for better type safety.

-    await expect(loadClerkJsScript({} as any)).rejects.toThrow(
+    await expect(loadClerkJsScript({} as Parameters<typeof loadClerkJsScript>[0])).rejects.toThrow(

🔇 Additional comments (8)
packages/shared/src/__tests__/loadClerkJsScript.test.ts (8)

31-32: Good practice using fake timers for async testing.

The use of fake timers is appropriate for testing timeout-based functionality and provides deterministic test execution.

44-50: Comprehensive test coverage for already loaded Clerk scenario.

The test correctly verifies that when Clerk is already available, the function returns null immediately without calling loadScript.

52-75: Well-structured test for async loading with timeout.

The test effectively simulates the async loading scenario using fake timers and validates both the loading process and the expected function calls.

77-93: Excellent coverage for timeout and fallback creation.

This test properly verifies the timeout behavior and confirms that a fallback Clerk instance is created when loading fails. The error handling and fallback state validation are well-implemented.

95-112: Good test for existing script scenario.

The test correctly handles the case where a script element already exists in the DOM, ensuring the function waits for Clerk to load without calling loadScript again.

114-126: Excellent race condition handling test.

This test covers an important edge case where Clerk loads just as the timeout fires, ensuring the implementation handles this scenario gracefully.

128-145: Thorough validation test for malformed Clerk objects.

The test properly validates that even if a Clerk object exists on the window, it must have the required methods to be considered properly loaded. The error handling is correct.

147-173: Comprehensive fallback Clerk behavior testing.

This test thoroughly validates that the fallback Clerk instance behaves safely, providing appropriate default values and no-op methods. This is crucial for preventing runtime errors in failure scenarios.

48-62: Improve type safety in validation function.

The function logic is correct, but the type assertions could be improved for better type safety.

Consider using a more type-safe approach:

function isClerkProperlyLoaded(): boolean {
-  if (typeof window === 'undefined' || !(window as any).Clerk) {
+  if (typeof window === 'undefined' || !('Clerk' in window)) {
     return false;
   }

-  const clerk = (window as any).Clerk;
+  const clerk = (window as Record<string, any>).Clerk;

   return (
     typeof clerk === 'object' &&
+    clerk !== null &&
     'status' in clerk &&
     'loaded' in clerk &&
     'load' in clerk &&
     typeof clerk.load === 'function'
   );
 }

This approach reduces reliance on any types and adds a null check for better robustness.

packages/shared/src/loadClerkJsScript.ts (6)

4-4: Import looks good.

The import of createFallbackClerk is properly added to support the new fallback mechanism.

36-42: Well-documented timeout option.

The scriptLoadTimeout option is properly typed and documented with a reasonable default of 15 seconds.

68-72: Simple and effective fallback creation.

The function correctly creates and assigns the fallback Clerk instance.

78-123: Robust timeout and polling mechanism.

The implementation provides a solid timeout-based approach with proper cleanup and error handling. The polling interval of 100ms strikes a good balance between responsiveness and performance.

The cleanup pattern and resolved flag prevent race conditions, and the error handling correctly creates a fallback instance on timeout.

138-166: Excellent refactor of the main loading function.

The refactored function significantly improves reliability by:

  • Using timeout-based validation instead of relying on script load/error events
  • Providing early returns for already-loaded Clerk instances
  • Implementing proper fallback handling on failure
  • Simplifying error handling for script loading

The approach addresses the PR objective of detecting Clerk JS loading failures more reliably than event-based detection.

138-166: All new loadClerkJsScript logic is covered by existing tests

The suite in packages/shared/src/tests/loadClerkJsScript.test.ts already validates:

  • Missing publishableKey error
  • Immediate return when window.Clerk is pre-loaded
  • Normal script load with polling until Clerk is available
  • Timeout behavior and fallback‐Clerk initialization
  • Race condition when Clerk loads just as timeout fires
  • Default‐timeout (15 s) fallback when only a partial Clerk object is assigned
  • Safe property access on the fallback Clerk instance
  • URL construction via clerkJsScriptUrl()

No additional tests are required for the loading mechanism.

}).catch(() => {
throw new Error(FAILED_TO_LOAD_ERROR);
});
}).catch(() => {});

26-27: LGTM! Consider adding type safety for the fallback property access.

The implementation correctly handles the fallback mechanism by checking for the __clerk_fallback property to determine if an existing Clerk instance should be replaced. The comment clearly explains the purpose of this change.

For improved type safety, consider adding a type check to ensure window.Clerk is an object before accessing its properties:

-if (!window.Clerk || window.Clerk.__clerk_fallback) {
+if (!window.Clerk || (typeof window.Clerk === 'object' && window.Clerk.__clerk_fallback)) {

This prevents potential runtime errors if window.Clerk is unexpectedly a primitive value.

packages/clerk-js/src/index.browser.ts (1)

26-27: Add proper TypeScript typing for the __clerk_fallback property.

The logic correctly handles replacing fallback instances with real implementations. However, accessing window.Clerk.__clerk_fallback without proper type definitions may cause TypeScript errors.

Consider adding a type assertion or extending the Clerk interface to include the __clerk_fallback property:

-if (!window.Clerk || window.Clerk.__clerk_fallback) {
+if (!window.Clerk || (window.Clerk as any).__clerk_fallback) {

Or better yet, extend the Clerk type definition to include this property in the appropriate type declaration file.

**/*.{ts,tsx}: Always define explicit return types for functions, especially public APIs
Use proper type annotations for variables and parameters where inference isn't clear
Avoid any type - prefer unknown when type is uncertain, then narrow with type guards
Use interface for object shapes that might be extended
Use type for unions, primitives, and computed types
Prefer readonly properties for immutable data structures
Use private for internal implementation details
Use protected for inheritance hierarchies
Use public explicitly for clarity in public APIs
Prefer readonly for properties that shouldn't change after construction
Use mapped types for transforming object types
Use conditional types for type-level logic
Leverage template literal types for string manipulation
Use ES6 imports/exports consistently
Use default exports sparingly, prefer named exports
Document public functions and APIs with JSDoc-style comments including @param, @returns, @throws, and @example
Define custom error classes for domain-specific errors
Use the Result pattern for error handling instead of throwing exceptions
Use optional chaining and nullish coalescing for safe property access
Let TypeScript infer types when types are obvious
Use const assertions for literal types: as const
Use satisfies operator for type checking without widening
Use readonly arrays and objects for immutability
Use immutable update patterns (spread, etc.) for objects and arrays
Use lazy loading for large types
Prefer unknown over any for performance
Use type-only imports: import type { ... }
Use branded types for domain safety
No any types without justification
Proper error handling with typed errors
Consistent use of readonly for immutable data
Proper generic constraints in TypeScript generics
No unused type parameters in generics
Proper use of utility types instead of manual type construction
Type-only imports where possible for performance
Proper tree-shaking friendly exports
No circular dependencies
Efficient type computations (avoid deep recursion)

PR: clerk/javascript#6116
File: .changeset/tangy-garlics-say.md:1-2
Timestamp: 2025-06-13T16:09:53.061Z
Learning: In the Clerk JavaScript repository, contributors create intentionally empty changeset files (containing only the YAML delimiters) when a PR touches only non-published parts of the codebase (e.g., sandbox assets). This signals that no package release is required, so such changesets should not be flagged as missing content.

Timestamp: 2025-06-18T23:27:13.537Z
Learning: In Clerk's JavaScript codebase, query errors from hooks like useOrganizationList are not typically handled in AIO (All-in-One) components. Error handling may be connected with the Card context instead, suggesting a centralized error handling approach rather than component-level error handling.

23-29: LGTM! Well-implemented fallback detection mechanism.

The condition correctly handles both scenarios:

  • Creating a new Clerk instance when none exists (original behavior)
  • Replacing a fallback Clerk instance with a real one when __clerk_fallback flag is detected

This change aligns with the broader enhancement to improve Clerk JS script loading reliability and error handling.

packages/clerk-js/src/index.legacy.browser.ts (1)

28-29: LGTM! Fallback replacement logic is well-implemented.

The modification correctly handles the fallback replacement scenario by checking both conditions:

  1. If no Clerk instance exists (original behavior)
  2. If a fallback instance exists and should be replaced with the real implementation

The short-circuiting in the condition ensures safe property access, and the comment clearly explains the intent.

packages/clerk-js/src/index.browser.ts (1)

27-27: Fallback flag property recognized by TypeScript

The __clerk_fallback property is already declared on the global Window.Clerk type in packages/clerk-js/src/core/clerk.ts, so TypeScript knows about it and the check in index.browser.ts is fully type-safe. No changes required.

File: .changeset/tangy-garlics-say.md:1-2

Learning: In the Clerk JavaScript repository, contributors create intentionally empty changeset files (containing only the YAML delimiters) when a PR touches only non-published parts of the codebase (e.g., sandbox assets). This signals that no package release is required, so such changesets should not be flagged as missing content.

Learning: In the Clerk JavaScript repository, when working with TypeScript decision tables or rule-based systems, redundant-looking ternary operators may be intentionally kept for TypeScript type narrowing when the compiler cannot infer that a value is non-null despite conditional checks. This is a pragmatic approach to handle TypeScript's type system limitations without overcomplicating the code.

Instead of casting, we can probably define the type on window in this module. The Clerk type should be available in the types package

@jacekradko Agreed, we should handle an error from loadScript() immediately.
