dictation shortcut - why do I must use a modifier?

Hi 👋 The legacy Hex allowed me to use any key as a shortcut. I use keypad_period because why would anyone need it 🤷‍♂️
New Hex asks me to Add a modifier when I try I only press period ヽ༼ ಥ_ಥ༽ﾉ

The Rust app currently requires a modifier for ordinary character keys, including keypad period. Standalone function keys and Globe/Fn are supported, so the message you saw is enforcing the current binding rule rather than failing to recognize your key.

Supporting keypad period is worth doing as an explicit standalone-key option. We need to define when HEX consumes the key, how cancellation/rebinding restores normal typing, and how it interacts with hold versus hands-free activation. I am leaving this open as a shortcut feature request rather than treating it as fixed by the modifier-side controls.

My workaround: made hyper+H the shortcut, then mapped keypad_period to that combination with the wonderful Karabiner-Elements
