Vriddhi causing suutra wrong? Shouldn't it be the generic अतो हलादेर्लघोः?

This is part of a bigger conversation of how vidyut-prakriya models rules and how we might align what it does with the traditional expectations. +cc @neeleshb since this is of interest to him too.

From the perspective of vidyut-prakriya (i.e. my perspective as someone who knows basic vyakarana and wants to create a reasonable program to generate forms), 7.2.3 always provides vrddhi and 7.2.7 provides the option to ignore vrddhi. So a derivation that uses 7.2.7 is making use of that option and will ignore, producing अफणीत् ; and a derivation that rejects this option will fall back to the default behavior and use 7.2.3, producing अफाणीत्.

The programmatic constraint (which we can modify) is that a form is explainable by a linear sequence of rules, each of which either allows a transform or blocks a transform.

Neelesh and I chatted about this issue a year or so ago. Paraphrasing his view, one of the shortcomings of automatic prakriya generators is that they confuse "a grammatical rule" with "a grammatical operation that uses one or more rules." If we can agree on what reasonable behavior looks like here, I can update the program to better produce what users expect.

In general for the वैकल्पिक सूत्राणि, both the paths are attributed to the same sutra. So in this case, both, i.e presence as well as absence of वृद्धि will be attributed to अतो हलादेर्लघोः ।
There are some remote cases where this does not happen, but I don't quickly recollect if any of those will be relevant here. If you come across anything as such, we can discuss.

Great, so my understanding is that for a वैकल्पिकसूत्रम्, we have two cases:

• accept: apply the सूत्रम्, so in this case we apply वृद्धि
• reject: do nothing. Maybe a more general rule will have scope (e.g. in the कृदन्तप्रकरणम्), and maybe it won't.

How would these differences be written down, e.g. in a UI?

We use the same sutra, I usually write down something like
अतो हलादेर्लघोः इति पाक्षिकः वृद्धिः ।
अतो हलादेर्लघोः इति पाक्षिकः वृद्ध्यभावः ।

If you need to have more concise notation, you can say something like 7.2.7+ and 7.2.7-
