The Non-Contact Diameter Sensor was developed as a low cast method for measuring plastic filament during extrusion before cooling. The diameter sensor could be used for many other purposes so was moved to its own repository. It works by shining a wide laser across a space to a linear CCD array. Objects that block the laser light measured by the width of their shadow.
The following links describe how to build and assemble the diameter sensor. In the final stages of the building process, it will need to be calibrated. To calibrate the sensor, a calibration tool must also be built:
