Design Refinement Discussion: Open-Source Prosthetic Hand Design for Community Fitting

Context

We are coordinating a community prosthetic fitting initiative across the Boston/Cambridge/Somerville, MA area. Our goal is to leverage open-source prosthetic design projects to improve accessibility and affordability of prosthetic devices.

Purpose

This issue is to coordinate design refinement discussions between engineers, designers, and community volunteers working on open-source prosthetic hand/arm projects. We aim to:

  1. Align design standards across open-source prosthetic projects (OpenBionics, Handy, r-echeverri's myoelectric arm, etc.)
  2. Standardize fitting protocols for community events
  3. Identify key mechanical/electronic improvements needed for durability, comfort, and usability
  4. Coordinate volunteer contributions from engineers and designers in the Boston/Cambridge/Somerville area

Proposed Discussion Topics

  • Mechanical design improvements (joint stability, material selection)
  • EMG sensor integration and signal processing
  • 3D printing tolerances for comfortable fit
  • Palm and finger geometry standardization
  • Battery life and power management
  • Modular design for easier repair and customization
  • Cost reduction strategies for community-level production

Meeting Format

  • We plan a hybrid meeting with engineers from across the region
  • Venue: TBD — seeking accessible community space in central Boston/Cambridge/Somerville area
  • Timeline: Initial discussion within 2-4 weeks
