fix(StudyBrowser): show the series in the sort picked in the panel settings - #6399
The study browser's settings icon opens a sort picker (sort function + direction). Picking anything there leaves the thumbnails in the same order, so the control looks broken. StudyBrowserSort does call displaySetService.sortDisplaySets, and activeDisplaySets is reordered, but PanelStudyBrowser builds its thumbnails through createStudyBrowserTabs, which regroups the display sets by study and re-sorts each group with the fixed sortingCriteria customization. The picked order is thrown away before it reaches the panel.
No upstream issue exists for this. It was found and fixed downstream by Radical Imaging and is contributed back here.
Changes & Results
DisplaySetService remembers the sort last applied through sortDisplaySets and exposes it with getDisplaySetSort() (new DisplaySetSort type).
createStudyBrowserTabs orders each study's thumbnails with that sort, in the picked direction. Ties under the picked sort fall back to sortingCriteria in the same direction. While no sort has been picked it keeps using sortingCriteria as before.
StudyBrowserSort unmounts whenever the settings row closes. It now starts from the applied sort and direction instead of the first entry, and it does not call sortDisplaySets until the user picks a sort or a direction, so opening the settings no longer changes anything by itself.
The settings icon in PanelStudyBrowserHeader gets a "Sort and filter series" tooltip (label on the action icon, translated through the StudyBrowser namespace).
DisplaySetService.onModeExit clears the picked sort, so the next study opens in the default order; getSortCriteria() returns the comparator the panel uses (picked sort with the default as tie-break, or the default).
Series Date ascending now lists the oldest series first (it was newest first, so the direction icon said the opposite of the order). Both studyBrowser.sortFunctions entries compare by key (series number; series date and time) and return 0 on a tie, so the default order breaks ties; a series with no number or no date sorts first. The docs sample's Series Date direction is fixed to match.
Tests: new createStudyBrowserTabs.test.ts, studyBrowserCustomization.test.ts and DisplaySetService.test.ts.
The tie-break matters. Series Date usually ties for every series of a study, and sortDisplaySets sorts and then reverses, which flips the tied entries each time it is reapplied. Without the tie-break, reopening the settings (which remounts the picker and reapplies its sort) flipped a descending list back to ascending.
Before: toggling the direction or picking Series Date leaves the thumbnails unchanged.
After: the thumbnails follow the picked sort and direction, and keep it when the settings are closed and reopened.
Testing
Unit: cd platform/core && npx jest src/utils/createStudyBrowserTabs.test.ts src/services/DisplaySetService gives 8/8 passing, and cd extensions/default && npx jest src/customizations/studyBrowserCustomization.test.ts 6/6. With only the createStudyBrowserTabs change reverted, 3 of its 4 tests fail.
Manual, on the dev server with the default public DICOMweb data source:
Open /viewer?StudyInstanceUIDs=1.3.6.1.4.1.14519.5.2.1.1620.1225.189514895974227080410265976065 (24 series).
Click the settings icon at the top of the study browser. The tooltip reads "Sort and filter series", and opening it leaves the order as it was.
Click the direction button: the thumbnails go from 101, 103, 201, … to 609002, 609001, 608002, ….
Close and reopen the settings twice: the order and the direction icon stay as picked.
Pick Series Date and toggle the direction: the thumbnails follow, and reopening the settings shows "Series Date" with the picked direction.
On current master, step 3 reorders displaySetService.getActiveDisplaySets() but the thumbnails stay at 101, 103, 201, …. I checked both on the same dev server.

PR
My Pull Request title is descriptive, accurate and follows the semantic-release format and guidelines.
Code
My code has been well-documented (function documentation, inline comments, etc.)
Public Documentation Updates
The documentation page has been updated as necessary for any public API additions or removals. (getDisplaySetSort() is a new read-only accessor on DisplaySetService; no existing API changes.)
Labeled Study Browser action icons display tooltips, including the settings icon’s “Sort and filter series” label.
Sort controls reflect the active sort and direction when available. Choosing a sort or direction orders series accordingly, using the default ordering to break ties.
Bug Fixes
Series numbers sort numerically, with missing or invalid values first. Series dates sort from earlier to later, including time, with undated series first.
…ettings
The study browser rebuilt each study's thumbnails with the fixed
sortingCriteria customization, so picking a sort or a direction reordered
the display set service but never the panel.
The display set service now remembers the sort it last applied and
createStudyBrowserTabs uses it, breaking ties with the default order in the
picked direction. The picker restores that sort when the settings row is
reopened and leaves the default order alone until the user picks one. The
settings icon gets a "Sort and filter series" tooltip.

Walkthrough
The Study Browser retains applied display-set sorting and uses it to order tabs. It waits for a sort choice before applying sorting. Series-number and date-time comparators use ascending keys. The settings action has a translated tooltip and accessible label.

DisplaySetService stores and exposes the last applied comparator and direction, and clears the stored sort on mode exit. StudyBrowserSort initializes from that state and waits for a sort or direction choice before applying sorting or subscribing to display-set updates.
Apply sorting to Study Browser tabs platform/core/src/utils/createStudyBrowserTabs.ts, platform/core/src/utils/createStudyBrowserTabs.test.ts, extensions/default/src/customizations/studyBrowserCustomization.ts, extensions/default/src/customizations/studyBrowserCustomization.test.ts, platform/docs/docs/platform/services/customization-service/sampleCustomizations.tsx
Tab ordering uses the active display-set sort when available, uses default criteria to break ties, and applies the selected direction. Series-number and date-time comparators use ascending keys. Tests cover default, ascending, descending, missing-value, and tie ordering. The sample customization uses ascending Series Date ordering.
Label the settings action extensions/default/src/Panels/StudyBrowser/PanelStudyBrowserHeader.tsx, extensions/default/src/Panels/StudyBrowser/constants/actionIcons.ts, extensions/default/src/Panels/StudyBrowser/types/actionIcon.ts, platform/i18n/src/locales/en-US/StudyBrowser.json
The settings action has the label “Sort and filter series.” The header uses the translated label for the trigger’s accessible label and tooltip content.

Explanation
The title names the StudyBrowser fix and the sort picker in the panel settings, which matches the main change. The PR makes study browser thumbnails follow the sort function and direction chosen in the settings panel. The title follows the semantic-release format (fix(Scope): summary) and is specific enough for a teammate scanning history.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description follows the repository template. It has Context, Changes & Results, Testing, and Checklist sections. Context explains the root cause: createStudyBrowserTabs regroups display sets and re-sorts them with sortingCriteria, which discards the picked order. Changes & Results lists each file-level change, including the tie-break rationale and the Series Date direction fix. Testing gives unit test commands and five manual steps with expected results. The checklist is filled in, and the tested environment is listed. The description is mostly complete. The Context section has no issue link, but the author states that no upstream issue exists, which explains the gap.

Minor · Functional Correctness · Quick win
Keep empty series numbers distinct from zero.
If SeriesNumber is '' or null, Number() returns 0. The comparator then treats a missing number as equal to a valid series number of 0, instead of placing it first. The image display-set handler also replaces missing numbers with 0, so this case needs an upstream fix as well as a key check. Preserve the missing value and map it to -Infinity before numeric conversion. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Fixed: a blank ('') or null SeriesNumber now counts as missing and sorts first, like an absent one, and the test uses SeriesNumber: ''. I've left the || 0 in getSopClassHandlerModule as it is. Every consumer of the image display set's SeriesNumber reads that value, so changing it is a wider change than this PR. As a result, a missing number on an image series still sorts as 0.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
@TFRadicalImaging The updated seriesNumberKey handles '', null, and absent values as missing while preserving valid 0.
Keeping getSopClassHandlerModule unchanged limits this PR’s scope. The image-series part of the finding remains: missing numbers normalized to 0 cannot sort separately from valid zero values.
Would you like me to open a follow-up issue for that upstream normalization and its consumers?

Ties under the picked sort fall back tosortingCriteriain the same direction. While no sort has been picked it keeps usingsortingCriteriaas before.StudyBrowserSortunmounts whenever the settings row closes. It now starts from the applied sort and direction instead of the first entry, and it does not callsortDisplaySetsuntil the user picks a sort or a direction, so opening the settings no longer changes anything by itself.PanelStudyBrowserHeadergets a "Sort and filter series" tooltip (labelon the action icon, translated through theStudyBrowsernamespace).DisplaySetService.onModeExitclears the picked sort, so the next study opens in the default order;getSortCriteria()returns the comparator the panel uses (picked sort with the default as tie-break, or the default).studyBrowser.sortFunctionsentries compare by key (series number; series date and time) and return 0 on a tie, so the default order breaks ties; a series with no number or no date sorts first. The docs sample's Series Date direction is fixed to match.createStudyBrowserTabs.test.ts,studyBrowserCustomization.test.tsandDisplaySetService.test.ts.The tie-break matters. Series Date usually ties for every series of a study, and
sortDisplaySetssorts and then reverses, which flips the tied entries each time it is reapplied.
