On develop: the five base PRs are merged (#1754, #1762, #1756, #1758, #1755, each with its review follow-ups), so this PR carries only
its own four commits over develop. #1763 (programmatic dependent launch on the sparse chain, a draft) is NOT a base: use_pdl=True on the
sparse chain keeps its existing typed decline here. The commits: C1 (QsaSpec.index_list_form declarable at every S_q), C2 (the binding +
the tracker + the docs, one commit per Rule S2), C3 (the measured fuse_prepare default on cc 10.7) and one follow-up commit from the review
of the restacked branch (the DSL-free home of the prepare arms' record; the admissibility-aware AUTO reading of fuse_prepare -- see below).

Summary

The block-sparse DECODE mode (kv_source="paged" on a QsaSpec geometry) now derives the step's selection ITSELF when the
geometry declares index_source="indexer": a new stage _IndexerDecode (qsa_indexer) in the indexer's slot between the
prepare / write-through and the sparse core runs, inside the block's ONE execute,

  1. the indexer-query norm + RoPE (the pool-1 compress of the band's query columns; under fuse_prepare=True an arm of the
    prepare launch) -- bitwise the prefill form's,
  2. the ring / block-compress step over the PAGED compressed-key cache (frost_qsa_compress_step's paged form; likewise fused into
    the prepare launch): every committed row's raw key into the ring at pos % cap, the row completing a 4-token block pools the
    block's four keys into its cache row -- bitwise the prefill compress of the same keys,
  3. the paged scorer (cudnn_block_qsa_score_paged, frost(gated_attention_block): the decode indexer's scorer over the paged compressed-key cache (qsa_score_paged) and its standalone selector #1758) over each row's visible complete blocks through the block table
    (counts = the visible count, block_lens_out = min(top_k, counts)),
  4. the decode top-k (cudnn_qsa_topk_decode, frost(gated_attention_block): the block-sparse indexer's decode top-k -- one CTA per row (a windowed 4096-bin histogram, a one-sweep canonical-order output) and a row-split cluster form for wide rows at few rows #1755; canonical descending ids, -1 past the count) into block_ids_out or the workspace,
  5. the sparse core over the pools on the per-row list (index_list_form="per_row", the only form here).

fuse_prepare is lifted on the block-sparse decode mode (the indexer form AND the caller-list band form -- the raw-key pool arm):
None is the MEASURED default (SPARSE_INDEXER_FUSE_PREPARE_DEFAULT_CCS = ((10, 7),) since the gate below). On cc 10.7 the indexer's
decode step reads True where the fused form is admissible -- the in-place pipeline (inplace_qkv=True), no fuse_norm_rope, no thd, a
paged write-through, a RoPE'd indexer key -- and False (the unfused twin) otherwise, never True where an explicit True is declined; every
other part and the caller-list band form read False until measured there. The two readings are bitwise; the dense-geometry DECODE form
keeps its decline.

Contract and envelope (append-only)

  • Constructor tail: sample_index_kv_cache [n_pages, P / 4, 1, 128] (the paged compressed-key cache: page block_table[b, j // (P / 4)],
    row j % (P / 4); page 0 the null page), sample_index_state_cache [blocks, cap >= S_q + 3, 1, 128] (the position-indexed ring of raw
    indexer keys; block 0 the null block), sample_index_state_block_table [B, 1] int32 -- REQUIRED on the form, refused off it by name;
    index_state_slot_mapping_present (the ring's write rows from execute(index_state_slot_mapping=), block x cap + pos % cap, -1
    dead, slot_mapping's dtype), index_commit_present (True = a typed follow-up), rope_position_tables_only (fused only: cos /
    sin refused, the launch rotates from the position tables at the device-derived position); fuse_prepare: Optional[bool] = None.
  • Execute tail: index_kv_cache, index_state_cache, index_state_block_table, index_state_slot_mapping, cos_pos / sin_pos
    ([1 or B, >= max_pages x P, rope_dim]: the table is the CEILING on positions; one row short is a ValueError naming the bound
    before any stage runs), n_commit (refused). block_ids / block_lens, index_k_raw (the raw key lives in the ring) and
    index_k_compressed (the cache is paged) are refused by name; block_ids_out / block_lens_out hand the selection back.
  • Workspace: five slots appended at the carve's END (ix_q, the fp32 logits [T, max_pages x P / 4], the counts, the ids, the
    compressed-slot report); no plan constant, allocation or host read on the execute path -- the FIRST execute of a fresh declaration
    captures into a CUDA graph with no warm-up.
  • DecodeEnvelope (appended): index_sources, index_cache_dtypes, index_head_dims, index_kv_heads, index_block_sizes,
    index_top_k_range, index_query_rows_max (64 = S_q x next_pow2(index_heads)), index_state_rows_extra (3), index_page_sizes
    (16 / 32 / 64 / 128), fuse_prepare_default (the part's measured reading; a declaration's AUTO resolves it only where the fused form is
    admissible); kv_cache_dtypes narrows to the activation dtype under the indexer. Decline rows, each raised with the text the envelope
    publishes and ONE shared token: indexer_query_rows, indexer_page_size, indexer_e4m3_cache, indexer_e4m3_pool,
    indexer_shared_list, fuse_prepare_rope_tables_unfused (+ indexer_f16, indexer_head_dim, indexer_thd, shared_list_rows
    published on the decode envelope).
  • Rule 9: one FE contract -- a serving stack declares the same block and reads the envelope's rows; nothing engine-specific leaks.
    Rule 7: the kernel modules are imported at plan time behind the DSL floor (qsa_topk.qsa_topk_decode_kernel_module(),
    qsa_score_paged.dsl_decline_reason, the paged scorer's and top-k's own gates; _IndexerDecode takes the top-k's default knobs
    through default_knobs_for, so the cluster form's 4.8.0 floor from frost(gated_attention_block): the block-sparse indexer's decode top-k -- one CTA per row (a windowed 4096-bin histogram, a one-sweep canonical-order output) and a row-split cluster form for wide rows at few rows #1755 applies unchanged); a DECLARATION imports no kernel module --
    the prepare arms' record QsaPrepareIndexArms is read from the DSL-free cache_write_contract.py (the follow-up commit); the ring rule
    is spelled DSL-free in the api and drift-checked at plan time.

The follow-up commit (after the restack)

  • Rule 7: the declaration under fuse_prepare imported kernels/qsa_prepare.py (the CuTe DSL at module scope) for the
    QsaPrepareIndexArms record, so on a sub-floor DSL the constructor died inside cudnn.frost.tile_dsl instead of raising the stage's
    typed version decline. The record (a NamedTuple of ints / bools) and the one definition of its pool default (DEFAULT_POOL) now live
    in the DSL-free gated_attention_block/cache_write_contract.py; kernels/qsa_prepare.py and kernels/qsa_compress.py import and
    re-export both names, so every kernel-side import path is unchanged. Detector: core/test_import_boundaries.py declares the indexer
    decode block on CPU samples under an explicit fuse_prepare=True and under the measured default (the cc patched to 10.7) and asserts
    kernels.qsa_prepare, kernels.qsa_compress, kernels.cache_write and cudnn.frost.tile_dsl absent (RED before the fix); a second
    cell models the public 4.6.2 wheel and gets the typed NotImplementedError naming 4.7.0 / 4.6.2 from check_support, the kernel module
    never imported.
  • The AUTO reading of fuse_prepare resolved True on every indexer-decode declaration of a measured part and ran that derived True
    through the explicit-True rows, so a legal out-of-place declaration (inplace_qkv=False) was refused with a ValueError blaming a knob
    the caller never set. _fuse_prepare_default is admissibility-aware (the Summary's rule); pinned in test_block_qsa_decode.py on every
    part: out of place AUTO constructs with fuse_prepare is False, fuse_prepare_requested is None, no prepare stage, the K / V-only write
    and four stage launches, the explicit True its ValueError; the rope_dim=0, qk_norm=True geometry the same way with the stage's
    check_support decline (RED before the fix). The docs page, the constructor comment, the class docstring, the envelope's field comment
    and the support-matrix tracker carry the clause "False out of place; never True where an explicit True is declined".

Tests (all L0; RED-first on the pre-change tree)

  • test_block_qsa_decode.py: the declaration facts + carve + envelope (host; + the out-of-place AUTO cells above); one trip test per
    decline row, the raised text EQUAL to the envelope's (host); the execute refusals in both directions on an uncompiled block under
    set_sync_debug_mode("error") (host); the decode-indexer ladder vs the TWO-STAGE oracle (the set == the fp64 top-k of the block's own
    (ix_q, kbar) up to ties; every row's attention within budget of the fp32 oracle fed the kernel's list; the ring rows and the completed
    cache rows bitwise the compress kernel; dead rows exact); the identity region bitwise the caller-list block on the full list; fused vs
    unfused bitwise with the launch census by kernel name (8 vs 11), no memcpy / memset, no allocation, no host sync; the indexer's list fed
    to a caller-list block bitwise; the first-execute capture + the replay over a new step; the RoPE-table ceiling; the ring-slot forms
    (int32 / int64); the position-table arm; the MTP residues; the workspace sentinel; the caller-list band form under fuse_prepare bitwise.
  • test_block_qsa_end_to_end.py: eight carried decode steps after a 301-token prefill (S_q 1 then 4, a rejected draft re-stepped;
    the cache rows bitwise a from-scratch compress of the accepted stream after every step; the completing row sees its own block); the
    R9 census (0 allocations, 0 host sorts).
  • test_block_qsa.py: the carve (five slots at the end, nothing else moves) and the published rows. test_qsa_prepare.py: the paged
    decline inverted to the dense-geometry row, the sparse mode builds. test_block_serving_pdl.py: AUTO False, explicit True declined.
    test_block_serving_extend.py: the execute-tail pin moved to n_commit. core/test_import_boundaries.py: the two declaration cells
    of the follow-up commit.

Verdict (reading the control pairs): the five B <= 4 control pairs beyond 1 % are a capture-order bias AGAINST the fused arm (the twin captured last is 0.4-0.5 us faster), so the band-corrected lever is >= +9.1 % on every B <= 4 cell and a build-order control confirmed the rows of record are conservative -- the measured default FLIPS: SPARSE_INDEXER_FUSE_PREPARE_DEFAULT_CCS = ((10, 7),) (commit C3).

Every FROST arm admitted by the oracles (the selection == the fp64 top-k of the kernel's own operands up to ties; cos(out) > 0.999 vs the

the e2e block bitwise) on all 19 + 4 cells. Functional validation of the binding itself: the test counts above.

Restack onto develop

The branch was first built on cherry-picks of the five base PRs; once all five squash-merged, the picks were dropped by range and C1-C3 were
replayed onto develop at #1495 (the develop head of the restack). C1 and C3 applied clean; C2 took one conflict and one adaptation:

Review notes

Open items

  • No FROST writer of the PAGED compressed-key cache at PREFILL -- the prefill form writes index_k_compressed densely; a serving stack
    scatters the rows into its pages and primes the ring from the prompt's raw band (documented; the multi-step cell does so).
  • The fuse_prepare default: measured and FLIPPED to True on cc 10.7 (C3) where the fused form is admissible; every other part keeps
    False until measured there.
  • index_commit_present=True (a per-sequence commit count) is a typed follow-up; the indexer_e4m3_cache / indexer_e4m3_pool arms
    wait for the paged scorer's e4m3 read arm and the sparse core's in-kernel dequant arm.
  • The nightly CI's CuTe DSL 4.7.0 jobs (SM90 / SM100 / A100; green before the base PRs merged) are red from the BASE kernels, not from
    this binding, and are handled in a separate fix PR: (a) the paged scorer raises a CUDA illegal instruction on SM90 / SM100 under the
    4.7.0 wheel -- its bundled PTX assembler (13.3) mis-encodes the uniform-register operands of cp.async.cg.shared.global.L2::cache_hint
    with a createpolicy register policy (the copies read uniform registers nothing writes; the 4.8.0 wheel's 13.4 assembler encodes them
    correctly; the PTX is identical; the unhinted copy passes under 4.7.0) -> the fix keys the L2-hint arm on the bundled compiler version
    (unhinted below 13.4, a typed decline if the hint is forced); (b) the top-k's cluster-form cells raise the 4.8.0 typed decline instead
    of skipping under 4.7.0, and one decline test expects the cc gate before the DSL gate -> the cells skip with the typed text and the cc
    gates precede the form's DSL floor; (c) the fresh-process front-door probe trips on the consolidated selection front door's eager
    cutlass import -> its tuple-dict helper moves to a DSL-free module and the probes are strengthened. The DSL 4.8.0 job of the same
    nightly was green on every gated_attention_block module. This PR changes none of those kernels; _IndexerDecode consumes them behind
    their Rule 7 gates.
  • Coverage: the out-of-place declaration (inplace_qkv=False, the unfused twin) constructs on every part but has no executing cell yet
    (the ladder declares in place); a follow-up adds it. The fuse_prepare_rope_tables_unfused text's hint ("declare fuse_prepare=True")
    leads an out-of-place caller to the in-place ValueError next -- a wording follow-up.
  • Two docstring follow-ups: the kernel listing's top-k entry (kernels/__init__.py) still reads "standalone until the decode indexer
    binds it"; _IndexerDecode.check_support re-runs the geometry rows without the e4m3-pool row (the block's declaration check carries it,
    so the stage is never built under an e4m3 pool).

over the step's own rows, the function the in-block indexer's decode step
computes -- could not bind that form at S_q <= 4.

`QsaSpec.index_list_form` (appended after `index_cache_dtype`; None /
"shared" / "per_row") is the declaration attribute: "per_row" binds the
sparse core's per-token arm at ANY S_q (`block_ids [B, S_q, top_k]` /
`[T, top_k]`, each row at its own position), "shared" the step-0 list by
name (S_q <= 4), None the former S_q rule under caller lists (and per row
under the in-block indexer over the pools, bound by the next change). A
numerics-changing attribute (which keys the speculative rows see), never a
knob. Typed declines, each read back by `serving_envelope().decode`:
"shared" past four rows (`shared_list_rows`, one shared token; the text the
constructor raises equals the envelope's row), "shared" on the block's own
K / V (every row carries its own list there), "per_row" over e4m3 pools
(the gathered cast reads one list per sequence). The envelope publishes
`decode.index_list_forms` / `decode.index_list_form_default` per geometry;
`blk.qsa_list_form` reads the resolved form back.

Tests (L0): the host cell -- the vocabulary, the resolution per S_q, the
declines (the envelope row-by-row), the per-row form's execute contract on
an uncompiled block; the declared per-row form at S_q 2 / 4 against the
per-row oracle on three ladder rows (B 4 with a dead and a negative-position
row, page 16 / 64, split 4 / the fill rule / unsplit, the 24 / 2 geometry),
two launches bitwise. The tracker's serving-forms section and the doc
page's QSA / serving-lists / decode-mode paragraphs carry the attribute.

… the pools -- QsaSpec(index_source="indexer") on the block-sparse decode mode (the paged compressed-key cache + the ring, the paged scorer and the decode top-k in ONE execute); fuse_prepare lifted on that mode

The block-sparse DECODE mode (kv_source="paged" on a QsaSpec geometry) now derives the step's selection itself when the geometry
declares index_source="indexer": a new stage `_IndexerDecode` (`qsa_indexer`) sits in the indexer's slot between the prepare /
write-through and the sparse core and runs, per execute, the indexer-query norm (the pool-1 compress; under fuse_prepare=True inside
the prepare launch), the ring / block-compress step over the PAGED compressed-key cache (`frost_qsa_compress_step`'s paged form,
likewise fused into the prepare launch), the paged scorer (`cudnn_block_qsa_score_paged`) over each row's visible complete blocks
through the block table, and the decode top-k (`cudnn_qsa_topk_decode`) into `block_ids_out` or the workspace; the sparse core takes
the list per row (`index_list_form="per_row"`, the only form here).

Public contract (append-only):
- constructor tail: `sample_index_kv_cache [n_pages, P / 4, 1, 128]`, `sample_index_state_cache [blocks, cap >= S_q + 3, 1, 128]`,
  `sample_index_state_block_table [B, 1]` (REQUIRED on the form, refused off it), `index_state_slot_mapping_present`,
  `index_commit_present` (True = a typed follow-up), `rope_position_tables_only` (fused only); `fuse_prepare: Optional[bool] = None`
  -- `None` = the measured default on the block-sparse decode mode (`SPARSE_INDEXER_FUSE_PREPARE_DEFAULT_CCS = ()`: False until the
  end-to-end gate measures the fusion), False on every other form as before; the knob is lifted on the caller-list band form too (the
  raw-key pool arm of the prepare launch); the dense-geometry DECODE form keeps its decline.
- execute tail: `index_kv_cache`, `index_state_cache`, `index_state_block_table`, `index_state_slot_mapping` (iff the flag;
  `slot_mapping`'s dtype), `cos_pos` / `sin_pos` (`[1 or B, >= max_pages x P, rope_dim]`: the ceiling on positions, one row short
  refused by form before any stage), `n_commit` (refused); `block_ids` / `block_lens`, `index_k_raw` and `index_k_compressed`
  refused by name on the form; the optional `block_ids_out` / `block_lens_out` hand the selection back.
- workspace: five slots appended at the carve's END (`ix_q`, the fp32 logits `[T, max_pages x P / 4]`, the counts, the ids, the
  compressed-slot report); no plan constant / allocation / host read on the execute path (the first execute captures with no warm-up).
- `DecodeEnvelope` (appended fields): `index_sources`, `index_cache_dtypes`, `index_head_dims`, `index_kv_heads`,
  `index_block_sizes`, `index_top_k_range`, `index_query_rows_max` (64), `index_state_rows_extra` (3), `index_page_sizes`
  (16 / 32 / 64 / 128), `fuse_prepare_default`; `kv_cache_dtypes` narrows to the activation dtype under the indexer; new decline rows
  with the raised text EQUAL to the envelope's: `indexer_query_rows`, `indexer_page_size`, `indexer_e4m3_cache`, `indexer_e4m3_pool`,
  `indexer_shared_list`, `fuse_prepare_rope_tables_unfused` (and the existing `indexer_f16` / `indexer_head_dim` / `indexer_thd` /
  `shared_list_rows` published on the decode envelope). `use_pdl=True` on the sparse chain keeps its existing decline; the stage
  threads the switch it is handed (`pdl_names`).

Limitation (documented): no FROST writer of the paged compressed-key cache at PREFILL -- the prefill form writes `index_k_compressed`
densely; a serving stack scatters the rows into its pages and primes the ring from the prompt's raw band (the multi-step cell does so).

Tests (all L0; RED-first on the pre-change tree): test_block_qsa_decode.py (the declaration facts + carve + envelope, one trip test
per decline row with the text equal to the envelope's, the execute refusals in both directions on an uncompiled block, the
decode-indexer ladder vs the two-stage oracle, the identity region bitwise the caller-list block, fused vs unfused bitwise with the
launch census by kernel name and the allocation / sync census, the indexer's list fed to a caller-list block bitwise, the
first-execute capture + the replay over a new step, the RoPE-table ceiling, the ring-slot forms, the position-table arm, the MTP
residues, the workspace sentinel, the caller-list band form under fuse_prepare bitwise), test_block_qsa_end_to_end.py (eight carried
decode steps after a prefill with a rejected draft re-stepped; the R9 census), test_block_qsa.py (the carve + the published rows),
test_qsa_prepare.py (the paged decline inverted to the dense-geometry row; the sparse mode builds), test_block_serving_pdl.py (AUTO
False / explicit True declined), test_block_serving_extend.py (the execute-tail pin moved). Docs and the support-matrix tracker in
this commit (Rule S2).

… the in-block indexer's DECODE step flips to True on cc 10.7 (SPARSE_INDEXER_FUSE_PREPARE_DEFAULT_CCS = ((10, 7),))

The end-to-end decode gate measured the fusion on an exclusive Rubin cc 10.7 part (212 SMs at the 2376 MHz lock, CUDA-graph replay
A/B/A 3 x 100 per cell): unfused / fused - 1 = +9.6 .. +14.5 % at B <= 4 (4.6-5.5 us per step: four launches -> one) and +4.4 .. +10.0 %
at B 32 over the 19 decode cells, geomean +11.9 % over B <= 4, the fused step bitwise the two-stage form on out AND the list everywhere.
The control pairs read -0.5 .. -1.3 % (five B <= 4 pairs beyond 1 %): a capture-order bias AGAINST the fused arm (the twin captured last
is 0.4-0.5 us faster), so the band-corrected lever is >= +9.1 % on every B <= 4 cell; a build-order control confirmed the rows of record
are conservative.  Hence the AUTO reading (`fuse_prepare=None`) resolves True on cc 10.7 for the indexer's decode step over the pools;
every other part keeps False until measured, the caller-list band form keeps False under AUTO, an explicit value wins everywhere.

- `SPARSE_INDEXER_FUSE_PREPARE_DEFAULT_CCS = ((10, 7),)` with the measurement as the constant's provenance; the envelope's
  `fuse_prepare_default` follows (True only where the indexer form is served: bf16 x head dim 128 on a measured part).
- Tests: the AUTO pins (True on cc 10.7, False off it and for the caller-list band form; the ladder's AUTO cells resolve by part), the
  envelope rows, the constant pin; docs + tracker rows that state the default.

… bind restack

Two findings of the restack review, each with its RED-then-green test:

P1 (Rule 7): the DECLARATION of the in-block indexer's DECODE step under
fuse_prepare imported `kernels/qsa_prepare.py` for the `QsaPrepareIndexArms`
record, and that module imports the CuTe DSL at module scope -- on a sub-floor
DSL the constructor died inside `cudnn.frost.tile_dsl` instead of raising the
typed version decline of the stage's `check_support`. The record (a plain
NamedTuple of ints / bools) now lives in the DSL-free
`gated_attention_block/cache_write_contract.py`, together with the one
definition of the compress ratio `DEFAULT_POOL` its default needs;
`kernels/qsa_prepare.py` and `kernels/qsa_compress.py` import and re-export
both names, so every kernel-side caller and test keeps its import path. The
two declaration-time import sites in `api.py` (`_QsaPrepare._index_arms`, the
constructor's arms record) read the contract module. Detector:
`test_import_boundaries.py::test_indexer_decode_declaration_under_fuse_prepare_does_not_import_the_prepare_kernel`
declares the indexer decode block on CPU samples under an explicit
`fuse_prepare=True` and under the measured default on a part that reads it
True, and asserts `kernels.qsa_prepare`, `kernels.qsa_compress`,
`kernels.cache_write` and `cudnn.frost.tile_dsl` absent (RED before this
commit: `kernels.qsa_prepare` present).

P2: the AUTO reading of `fuse_prepare` (`None`) resolved True on every
indexer-decode declaration of a measured part and then ran that derived True
through the explicit-True rows, so a legal out-of-place declaration
(`inplace_qkv=False`) was refused with a ValueError blaming a knob the caller
never set, against the method's own promise ("never True where an explicit
True is declined"). `_fuse_prepare_default` is now admissibility-aware: it
reads True only where every explicit-True row is false (the write-through
attribute, `fuse_norm_rope`, the in-place pipeline, `thd`, the e4m3 cache) and
the fused stage's own `rope_dim` row (`_QsaPrepare.check_support`) does not
fire -- False, the unfused twin, otherwise; an explicit True keeps its typed
decline everywhere.  Pinned in
`test_block_qsa_decode.py::test_decode_indexer_declaration_facts_carve_and_the_envelope_rows`
beside the cc-patched loop on every part: out of place AUTO constructs with
`fuse_prepare is False`, `fuse_prepare_requested is None`, `_prepare is None`,
the K / V-only write and four stage launches, the explicit True its
ValueError; the `rope_dim=0` geometry the same way with the stage's
check_support decline (RED before this commit: the ValueError at
construction). The docs page, the constructor comment, the class docstring,
the envelope's field comment and the support-matrix tracker carry the clause
"False out of place; never True where an explicit True is declined".

2140-2322: 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win

Add an independent expected top-k assertion.

The test checks that returned IDs are descending, visible, and well formed, but its attention oracle uses the returned IDs themselves. A scorer that returns the wrong visible blocks can therefore satisfy the shape checks and produce a matching oracle result. The completion check only requires the newly completed block to appear; it does not validate the other selected blocks.

Use the existing independent top-k comparison used by the other indexer tests, based on the scorer's expected query and compressed-key inputs, so an incorrect valid top-k set fails.

Reviewed 65cf3dcbb14a against base cfcb846a295f.

The decode composition passed the focused native checks. One nonblocking test issue remains: the unsupported-target assumption reported below also affects test_decode_indexer_declaration_facts_carve_and_the_envelope_rows in test_block_qsa_decode.py:1502. Both tests need a controlled supported-target state for their positive envelope assertions.

Validation: SM107: 8 native tests passed with no skips, covering first-execute capture and changed-input replay in both prepare modes, int32/int64 ring slots, position-only RoPE tables, and workspace bounds. Additional native probe: out-of-place AUTO, fused/unfused output and selection equivalence, and side-cache rebinding with padded strides passed. Selection was checked against the FP64 top-k oracle on the kernel operands; attention was checked against the independent block reference. Host declaration and serving suites on DSL 4.7.1: 139 passed, 2 failed as described above, 79 skipped, 134 deselected. The two new fresh-process import and version-gate tests passed on both DSL 4.7.1 and an isolated actual 4.6.2 installation. Style, Docs, Security, and the latest merge-requirements workflow passed. Requested python/*/cutedsl CI for this head; pipeline 75942823 is running. All 14 changed files match its integration tree.

Limitations: Native validation is bounded; the full CI result is still pending.

Approved: no P0 or high-risk P1 found. Remaining findings stay with the owner; merge timing stays with the owner.

CI 75942823 on 65cf3dcbb14a found two additional test-maintenance gaps:

  • Add the absent (-1) ix_counts, ix_cslot, and ix_logits fields to the expected workspace dictionaries in test_block_fp4.py and test_block_training_forward.py. These account for 24 SM107 failures; the existing offsets match.
  • Refresh the public API index for the added envelope fields, list-form field, and exports.

The reported envelope assertion also failed on SM80 and SM90. On SM107, all 76 decode tests, 99 QSA end-to-end tests, and 67 prepare tests passed. Other pipeline checks are still running.

Pipeline 75942823 finished with failures on 65cf3dcbb14a.

The workspace snapshots, API index and envelope-test issues reported above remain. SM107 finished with 8,131 passed, 26 failed, 2,695 skipped and 2 xfailed. Of the failures, 24 are the workspace snapshots; two are launch-configuration errors in unchanged GEMM/JAX tests, with cause not established. All 76 decode, 99 QSA end-to-end and 67 prepare tests passed.

SM80 and SM90 each failed the reported envelope assertion. SM100 failed during image setup and ran no tests. No rerun was requested.

Codex bot review — model gpt-6-astra.

…follow-up -- the workspace dictionaries name the absent indexer slots, the API index lists the new envelope fields and exports, the CodeQL and review items

The two expected-workspace dictionaries (the fp4 and the training-forward suites) name the indexer DECODE step's three
absent slots (ix_logits / ix_counts / ix_cslot = -1, appended last as the layout orders them): the 24 workspace cells
the cc 10.7 lane reported.

The API index lists the 16 names the bind added to cudnn.gated_attention_block: the twelve DecodeEnvelope fields
(index_list_forms, index_list_form_default, the ten indexer facts incl. fuse_prepare_default), the three
QSA_INDEX_LIST_FORM* exports and QsaSpec.index_list_form.

The two positive envelope cells (test_block_qsa.py, test_block_qsa_decode.py) model the served DSL state (the public
4.8.0 wheel with the sm_107a target, the sibling cells' pin) instead of reading this host's wheel: a DSL at the floor
without the Rubin target reports decode unserved and fuse_prepare_default False, which the SM80 / SM90 lanes hit.

CodeQL: _IndexerCase no longer skips a base initializer -- the shared methods move to _CaseBase and each case builds its
own state; the unused KV_SOURCE_SELF / _qsa_decode_decline_texts imports and the unused B, S locals go; the api module
is imported in one form; api.py drops the unused logging / _logger / WorkspaceLayout and spells the two float NaN tests
as math.isnan (v is a float: identical semantics).

The end-to-end decode-step cell asserts the expected list in closed form (top_k above every visible count: the complete
visible set, descending); the binding top-k stays compared against the fp64 top-k in the decode ladder.

Follow-up b52f25775 (one commit on 65cf3dcbb) addresses the CI findings on pipeline 75942823, the open CodeQL alerts and both CodeRabbit items. Each item: the change, then the evidence. Node class below is the cc 10.7 development node (204 SMs, shared, functional only); the host is an A100.

1. The 24 workspace-dictionary failures on the cc 10.7 job (test_block_fp4.py::test_workspace_layout_is_byte_identical_without_fp4, test_block_training_forward.py::test_workspace_layout_is_byte_identical_without_want_saved, 12 cells each)

  • Change: _COMMON / _ABSENT name the indexer DECODE step's three absent slots, ix_logits / ix_counts / ix_cslot = -1, appended last as _Intermediates orders them (the existing offsets were already right, as reported); the comments beside them name the set.
  • Evidence: on the unchanged tree the host reproduces the 24 failures with exactly {'ix_counts': -1, 'ix_cslot': -1, 'ix_logits': -1} missing from the expected dictionaries; on the fix 12 + 12 pass on the host, and on the cc 10.7 development node test_block_fp4.py L0 119 passed and test_block_training_forward.py L0 94 passed (0 failed, 0 skipped).

2. analysis:api_index (the API index mismatch)

  • Change: test/python/api_index/api_index.txt lists the 16 names the bind added to cudnn.gated_attention_block, inserted by hand in the generator's sorted() order: DecodeEnvelope.{fuse_prepare_default, index_block_sizes, index_cache_dtypes, index_head_dims, index_kv_heads, index_list_form_default, index_list_forms, index_page_sizes, index_query_rows_max, index_sources, index_state_rows_extra, index_top_k_range}, QSA_INDEX_LIST_FORMS, QSA_INDEX_LIST_FORM_PER_ROW, QSA_INDEX_LIST_FORM_SHARED, QsaSpec.index_list_form. No other module's exports changed.
  • Evidence: api_index.py run on cudnn.gated_attention_block alone against this branch's package derives exactly these 16 additions and nothing else; after the edit the same run matches the committed set (the only remaining delta is the Python 3.10 dir() artifact on ProjBlock's int methods, which the Python 3.11+ CI image does not show); the file stays in sorted() order with no duplicates; the api_index fixture suite is 10 ok. The full runtime check could not be run on the host (its Python 3.10 environment has no jax, so the scanner declines before diffing), so the analysis:api_index job is the arbiter for the whole index.

3. The envelope cell red on the SM80 / SM90 jobs (test_block_qsa.py::test_decode_indexer_declines_are_published_row_by_row_and_the_envelope_names_the_indexer_facts; CodeRabbit's Major on line 380 and the Codex [P2], which also named test_block_qsa_decode.py::test_decode_indexer_declaration_facts_carve_and_the_envelope_rows)

  • Change: both positive envelope cells model the served DSL state the way the sibling cells already do (cudnn.frost.buffers._DSL_STATE = the public 4.8.0 wheel, _cutedsl_has_sm107 True, through monkeypatch): the facts they pin are a reading of the SERVED form, never of the host's wheel. Under a DSL at the floor but without the sm_107a target, serving_envelope(..., device_cc=(10, 7)) reports decode unserved and fuse_prepare_default False by the knob's own rule, which is what those two jobs read.
  • Evidence: with a pytest plugin that models a DSL without sm_107a (what those jobs run), the unchanged tree fails both cells exactly as CI did (fuse_prepare_default False at line 380; served False at the decode cell's line 1502); the fixed tree passes both under the same plugin (2 passed) and under the host's own DSL (2 passed); on the cc 10.7 development node test_block_qsa.py L0 70 passed and test_block_qsa_decode.py at every tier 76 passed.

4. CodeQL (the ten open alerts on the PR's files)

  • py/missing-call-to-init (error) test_block_qsa_decode.py:1776: _IndexerCase no longer inherits an initializer it never ran. The methods the two decode cases share (compile / execute / run / slab_views / label / check) moved verbatim into _CaseBase; _Case and _IndexerCase each derive from it and build their own state (the indexer's case declares a different geometry and primes the ring and the compressed cache, so calling _Case.__init__ would have drawn a second dataset from the generator for nothing). Behaviour is unchanged: the decode module passes at every tier (76) on the cc 10.7 development node.
  • py/unused-import test_block_qsa_decode.py:78 (_qsa_decode_decline_texts) and :69 (KV_SOURCE_SELF): removed from the two import statements.
  • py/import-and-import-from test_block_qsa_decode.py:1468: the one import cudnn.gated_attention_block.api as _api (the monkeypatch target) is now from cudnn.gated_attention_block import api as _api, the module's one import form.
  • py/unused-local-variable test_block_qsa_decode.py:1060 (B, S): the dead assignment removed (pre-existing on develop; the file is in this diff).
  • py/unused-import api.py:326 (WorkspaceLayout): removed; nothing in the package or the tests reads it through this module.
  • py/unused-global-variable api.py:328 (_logger): no log line in the module uses it (so no diagnostic is lost); removed together with the then-unused import logging.
  • py/comparison-of-identical-expressions api.py:2770 / :2931: the two deliberate NaN tests on v = float(...) are spelled math.isnan(v); identical semantics on a float, import math added. (These four api.py alerts and the two unused locals predate this PR on develop; fixed here because the files are in the diff.)

5. CodeRabbit nitpick (test_block_qsa_end_to_end.py, the decode-step cell: an independent expected top-k)

  • Change: in that cell top_k = 512 exceeds every visible count (at most 79 complete blocks across the eight steps), so the scorer's top-k IS the complete visible set; the cell now asserts the expected list in closed form, count - 1 .. 0 then padding, so an incorrect yet well-formed selection cannot hide in the shape checks. The BINDING top-k (fewer slots than visible blocks) stays compared against the fp64 top-k of the kernel's own operands in the decode module's ladder (check_selection, top_k 4..512 at lengths up to 8192) and, for the prefill form, by _indexer_two_stage in the same module; a fp64 comparison in this cell would have been vacuous.
  • Evidence: test_block_qsa_end_to_end.py L0 99 passed on the cc 10.7 development node (the decode-step cell under both knob readings included).

Host tiers on the follow-up: core/test_import_boundaries.py 33 passed (host and node); the host halves of the touched modules at the default tier: test_block_qsa.py 67 passed / 3 skipped, test_block_qsa_decode.py 20 / 56, test_block_qsa_end_to_end.py 3 / 96, test_block_fp4.py 60 / 59, test_block_training_forward.py 30 / 64 (the skips are the Rubin-only cells). black -l 160 clean; py_compile clean.

Not in this follow-up: the two test_grouped_gemm_canonical_jax.py cells red on the cc 10.7 job are the develop nightly's pre-existing gemm/jax failures (CUDADialectError), untouched by this PR; the SM100 job of the same pipeline did not run any test (the runner failed to import its image, 403 at the registry); the merge-requirements Milestone is a maintainer field.

Reviewed b52f25775cb6 against base cfcb846a295f.

The follow-up resolves my envelope-test finding and the reported workspace snapshot and API-index gaps. The test-method move preserves behavior, and the small production cleanup preserves validation semantics. No remaining actionable finding from this review.

Validation: Focused host run: 91 passed, 4 skipped, including the 24 workspace snapshots. The decode declaration/envelope test also passed alone on public DSL 4.7.1. On the actual public DSL 4.6.2 floor, the portable envelope test and quantization-spec validation both passed. Ten focused SM107 tests passed with no skips: fused/unfused first-execute capture and replay, ring forms, position-only RoPE, workspace bounds and the strengthened multi-step decode checks. The gated_attention_block API scan matches all 173 expected names. The six moved test methods are AST-identical. Requested pipeline 75959853 for this head and verified all 17 PR files match its integration tree. CI is pending.

Limitations: The full local API-index scan could not complete because JAX is absent from the test environment; the changed module was checked separately. CI must confirm the full index and all affected lanes. Reused earlier kernel and performance evidence: this update does not change the execution kernels.

Comment only: this PR already has an active approval; preserving existing approvals.

Pipeline 75959853 tested b52f25775cb6; all 17 PR files match its integration tree. The API-index check now passes. SM80 passed 775 tests and SM90 passed 1,254, including the repaired portable envelope test.

SM107 passed 8,156 tests, including all 76 decode, 99 QSA end-to-end, 70 QSA, 67 prepare, 119 FP4 and 94 training-forward tests. The earlier snapshot failures are resolved. Its one failure is in unchanged GEMM/JAX code: test_canonical_jax_parity[wrapper-True-True-True-1-swiglu] rejected a CUDA launch configuration; I have not established its cause.

SM100 failed during image setup before testing. The pipeline remains red; these results confirm the PR's reported test fixes but do not provide a passing SM100 run.

…ves the wave tail -- where the fill rule leaves a second wave the split minimizes waves x (tiles per chunk + 1); every one-wave schedule keeps its measured split (#1802)

On `develop` (33bee40: #1789's in-block indexer decode step and #1792's DSL 4.7.0 fixes merged): ONE commit over `develop`, the
block-sparse DECODE mode's default split rule. No binding / tracker / Capabilities change (a knob-domain default only, Rule S2 exempt:
`decode_split_kv` stays the one served knob, any split in `[1, ceil((top_k + 1) / 32)]` pins the former choice).

## Summary

The block-sparse decode mode (`kv_source="paged"` on a `QsaSpec` geometry) chooses its split-KV when the declaration leaves
`decode_split_kv=None`.  The former FILL rule -- `ceil(SMs / (B x H_kv x S_q))` chunks per work item, capped at the item's tile count and
at 16 -- puts one chunk-item per SM but does not see the tail wave it leaves where the chunk-items overflow one wave of SMs: a CTA streams
its chunk serially, so 256 equal items on 212 SMs cost two item durations, not 1.2. The block's end-to-end census on a Rubin cc 10.7 part
(212 SMs at the 2376 MHz lock, CUDA-graph replay, the 24 / 2 geometry at `top_k` 512) showed three schedules left in two waves: the
T 128 step's (B 32 x S_q 4) 256 unsplit 17-tile items, B 32 x S_q 1 at split 4 (256 chunk-items in 1.2 waves) and B 4 x S_q 4 at split 7
(224 chunk-items in 1.06 waves).

`sparse_decode_split_choice` gains the WAVE rule: where the fill rule's pick overflows one wave (`units x split > SMs`) the split in
`[1, min(ceil((top_k + 1) / 32), SPARSE_DECODE_SPLIT_CAP)]` that minimizes `ceil(units x split / SMs) x (ceil(tiles / split) +
SPARSE_DECODE_SPLIT_ITEM_COST_TILES)` -- the waves the launch takes, times the tiles a chunk streams plus the chunk-item's fixed cost
(`sparse_decode_split_rounds`; the cost constant is ONE tile, a model term: the bare `waves x tiles` count would cut the 17-tile T 128 item
into nine two-tile chunks) -- ties to the smaller split.  On a 212-SM part: T 128 1 -> 3 (768 chunk-items of 6 / 6 / 5 tiles), B 32 x
S_q 1 4 -> 3 (192 chunk-items, one wave), B 4 x S_q 4 7 -> 6 (192, one wave).  Every launch the fill rule keeps in one wave -- every
B <= 4 x S_q 1 cell and B 1 x S_q 4, the measured 16s -- is untouched, bitwise.  The combine form a moved cell takes is the pinned one
(the lean group walk at B 32 x 24 heads at split 3 as at 4; the combine module's own forms at B 4 x S_q 4 at split 6 as at 7).  A
performance choice only: the same function under every value.

## Tests

`test_block_qsa_decode.py` (RED-first on the pre-change tree: the constant's `ImportError` and `4 == 3` on the B 32 x S_q 1 class): the
rule table (one-wave rows unchanged, the second-wave rows, the undo row, the one-wave invariant, the bound) and the 19 measured decode cells
at 212 and at 204 SMs (the ten one-wave cells bitwise the former rule, the six two-wave cells and the three T 128 cells moved, the combine
form per moved grid). Docs: the decode-mode paragraph and the published requires row name the wave rule.

Re-verified after the rebase onto `develop` on a SHARED Rubin cc 10.7 development part (204 SMs; functional only, never a performance
number): `test_block_qsa_decode.py` at every tier, `test_block_serving_decode.py` and `test_block_serving_capture.py` at L0 -- the counts
in the first comment below.

## Measured (on the same single commit before the rebase onto `develop`; the rebased patch is byte-identical): the block-sparse decode split rule (the wave rule) vs the former fill-rule split, pinned in the same process, with the vLLM QSA attention sub-layer as the baseline

**Setup.** One exclusive GPU of a Rubin cc 10.7 performance node, 212 SMs at the 2376 MHz lock (busy clock sampled per cell, power-cap counter delta 0 on every cell, Xid count unchanged, no foreign processes); HBM SOL % against that GPU's copy bandwidth measured in place (13180.6 GB/s), never the datasheet. **Verdict: PASS.** Every arm admitted by its own oracle (never widened); every control pair within 1 % (the widest -0.79 %); no cell loses beyond its band -- every moved cell gains: +6.7 % at B 4 x 32K x S_q 4 (split 7 -> 6), +5.7 / +4.9 / +3.6 % at B 32 x S_q 1 (4 -> 3; 8K / 32K / 128K), +20.0 / +16.8 / +14.8 % at the three T 128 cells (1 -> 3); geomean +10.2 % over the 7 moved cells. The four unmoved cells (split 16 -> 16) are bitwise identical between the two declarations (out and selection).

**Finding (reported, not a bar).** The T 128 cells were modelled at parity to about +8 % vs vLLM under this rule and read +15.0 / +11.9 / +11.9 %. The census above says which kernel moved: at B 32 x 8K x S_q 4 the sparse tile kernel 64.8 us at split 1 -> 44.7 us at split 3, plus a 3.9-us lean-walk combine that split 1 did not need (-16.2 us net on an 82.7-us step); the GEMMs, prepare, scorer and top-k are identical within 0.2 us. The schedule lever (two waves of 17-tile items -> four waves at split 3) is worth more than the model's ceiling; this rule is still not the T 128 fix (the per-row re-gather of a sequence's listed KV is a separate change), so the T 128 numbers here are this rule's share alone.

**Limitations.** (1) One GPU of one node class; a second node class gets its own table. (2) On the moved cells the output differs from the former split by the combine's fp32 summation order only (cos 0.999996-0.999997, max abs 9.8e-4 = one bf16 ulp at the output's magnitude; the selection bitwise); the unmoved cells are bitwise. (3) The rule also moves classes outside these 11 cells (B 8 x S_q 1 / B 2 x S_q 4: 14 -> 9; B 16 x S_q 1: 7 -> 6; B 8 x S_q 4: 4 -> 3), unmeasured here, inside the knob's contract (the same function). (4) PDL on the sparse chain is not in the measured stack; bf16 pools only. (5) The vLLM arm is admitted by its own oracle on every cell; it is not bitwise across two launches on 10 of 11 cells (its own property), the FROST arms are.

## Open items

- The cost constant `SPARSE_DECODE_SPLIT_ITEM_COST_TILES = 1` is a model term; the measurement above agrees with its direction on every
  moved cell, so it is NOT refit here. The T 128 cells read above the model's band (parity to about +8 % vs the vLLM layer): the census
  attributes the gain to the sparse tile kernel alone (64.8 -> 44.7 us at split 3, plus a 3.9-us combine); this rule is still not the
  T 128 fix (the per-row re-gather of a sequence's listed KV is a separate change).
- The rule also moves classes outside the 11 measured cells (B 8 x S_q 1 / B 2 x S_q 4: 14 -> 9; B 16 x S_q 1: 7 -> 6; B 8 x S_q 4: 4 -> 3),
  inside the knob's contract (the same function); a second node class (a different SM count) gets its own table.

… at DECODE -- QsaSpec(index_source="indexer", index_cache_dtype=torch.float8_e4m3fn): the compress kernels' e4m3 store arm, the paged scorer's e4m3 read arm on mma.sync.m16n8k32, the block's binding; opt-in by dtype, bf16 the default and the reference (#1803)

On `develop` (a8851aa = three commits over `develop`): the in-block indexer's DECODE step (#1789) and its DSL-4.7.0 follow-up (#1792)
are the base, so this PR carries only its own three commits. Restacked onto the merged scorer (the unhinted key copies below the 13.4
assembler, the `l2_hint` knob and the DSL-free front door `cudnn.QSA.selection_paged`): the e4m3 read arm emits develop's hinted / plain copy
at both of its copy sites, `cache_dtype` joins `l2_hint` as an appended compile key, and every bf16 key (and persistent-cache entry) is unchanged.

## Summary

The compressed-key (indexer) cache of the block-sparse DECODE mode may be **e4m3**: `QsaSpec(index_source="indexer", index_cache_dtype=torch.float8_e4m3fn)`
on the paged pools. Opt-in BY DTYPE -- a declaration attribute, never a knob; **bf16 stays the default and the reference** (the `None`
reading is the activation dtype, exactly as before; nothing of the bf16 chain moves). Three commits:

1. **The compress kernels' e4m3 store arm** (`compile_qsa_compress(out_dtype=)`, `compile_qsa_compress_step(index_cache_dtype=)` on the dense
   AND the paged step form, `compile_qsa_prepare(index_cache_dtype=)` on the fused prepare's query + compress arms; one `tile_dsl` helper
   `bf16_words_to_e4m3_words`): every writer stores **the e4m3 cast OF THE bf16 ROW** the bf16 form stores -- the packed bf16 words widened
   exactly and rounded once by `cvt.rn.satfinite.e4m3x2.f32` (round-to-nearest-even, saturating at +-448, never a NaN), plain e4m3 at unit
   scale, no scale field anywhere. That is the serving stacks' indexer-cache convention and the prefill form's per-tensor cast, so a paged
   cache a stack primes from the prefill form's e4m3 rows and the step appends is ONE chain, bitwise. The ring stays the io dtype (a bit
   copy, never quantized); f16 io has no e4m3 arm; below sm_89 a typed `NotImplementedError` names the instruction.
2. **The paged scorer's e4m3 READ arm** (`compile_qsa_score_paged(cache_dtype=)`, appended): the same kernel with the element size swapped --
   128-B rows (8 granules), lane `(g, q)` loads granules `q + 4 j` for `j in {0, 1}`, 4 k-steps of `mma.sync.m16n8k32.row.col.f32.e4m3.e4m3.f32`
   (every e4m3 x e4m3 product exact in fp32: the arm's error is the accumulation's alone); every k-step consumes 32 B of a row in both forms,
   so the K permutation and the fragment indexing are dtype-free and only the step count (8 -> 4), the granules per lane (4 -> 2) and the row
   bytes (256 -> 128) move, each a function of the element size (`selection_paged.row_bytes` / `k_steps` / `chunks_per_lane` / `mma_k`, never a
   second literal). One copy instruction moves four rows (two per n-tile), the query tile one `cp.async` per thread per m-tile, at page 8
   (`R = 2`) two page parts per instruction with a per-lane shuffle source; ring slot 1 KiB, SMEM 18 KiB at the defaults (bf16 36). The
   barrier table is UNCHANGED row by row (`bar.sync` 1, `bar.warp.sync` one per n-tile, the commit / wait counts identical): the arm changes
   the bytes per copy, never a participant count or a wait. sm_89+ (a typed decline naming the instruction below it); the bf16 arm's trace
   is unchanged (a register-normalised PTX diff against the base: the query-tile index arithmetic only). The standalone selector
   `qsa_select_decode_paged_forward` admits the e4m3 pair (a mixed or an unserved pair stays a form error); `_kbar_rows_view(dtype=)` and
   `moved_bytes(elem_bytes=)` appended.
3. **The block's binding**: the declared dtype threads through `_QsaPrepare` (the fused query + compress arms store e4m3), `_IndexerDecode`
   (the pool-1 compress and the step form on the unfused arm store e4m3; the scorer runs its e4m3 arm) and the carve (`ix_q` at 1 B per
   element; every bf16 carve byte-identical). `sample_index_kv_cache` / `execute(index_kv_cache=)` are REQUIRED in the declared dtype both
   ways (a bf16 cache under the attribute and an e4m3 cache under a bf16 declaration are refused by name, at declaration and at execute);
   the ring stays bf16. No cast kernel: the launch census is the bf16 form's (8 fused / 11 unfused). The `indexer_e4m3_cache` decline row
   is retired (a served form has no decline row) and `decode.index_cache_dtypes` reads `(torch.bfloat16, torch.float8_e4m3fn)` wherever the
   indexer is served. Still declined: the e4m3 MAIN pool with the indexer (`indexer_e4m3_pool`, under both cache dtypes), e5m2 / any other
   cache dtype, the attribute under caller lists, f16 activations, an e4m3 ring, `use_pdl=True` under `QsaSpec`. The prefill form's e4m3
   (its cast chain and census) is untouched. Tracker (Rule S2) and docs in the same commit; the docs and the `QsaSpec.index_cache_dtype`
   docstring carry the measured result below.

## Numerics

A **different selection function** (3 mantissa bits), chosen at declaration. Its oracle is EXACT and never widened: the step's set == the
fp64 top-k of the block's own e4m3 `(ix_q, kbar)` up to ties, the cache rows and `ix_q` bitwise the bf16 twin's `.to(float8_e4m3fn)` on the
same inputs (one rounding convention across the fused prepare, the step form, the pool-1 compress and the prefill form), fused == unfused,
two launches and the first-execute capture bitwise, the multi-step uniform cache after a 301-token e4m3 prefill. The bf16-vs-e4m3 agreement
is a statistic (99.0 / 97.4 / 96.5 % of the blocks at 4K / 32K / 128K on synthetic activations) with the structural pin that every flipped
block sits at the rank boundary. The model-quality question of serving the e4m3 cache is the caller's; the e4m3 column is labelled a
different function in every table.

### Verdict (first run)

- **(ii) PASS** -- the lever at B 32 x 128K x S_q 1 is +7.41 us / +10.8 % (modeled +18.0 %: the paged scorer reads 23.8 -> 16.8 us where the model said 24.0 -> 12.2 us).
- **(v) PASS** -- every FROST oracle on all 13 cells: the selection exact up to ties (0 tie flips), cos > 0.99998 vs the fp32 reference fed that list, fused == unfused bitwise (out + list), the e4m3 arm's cache rows / indexer queries / rings bitwise the bf16 twin's `.to(float8_e4m3fn)` on every cell (up to 1,048,576 rows). No tolerance widened.
- **(i) FAIL, marginal, 8K only** -- B 1 x 8K x S_q 1 reads -1.1 % and B 1 x 8K x S_q 4 reads -1.0 % against the 1.0 % band (-0.38 us each). The scorer itself reads equal (2.6 / 2.6 us); the loss is the e4m3 path's fixed cost in the small prepare / score / top-k kernels (~0.2 us each) at a 0.26 MB cache, where halving the bytes buys nothing. A finding on the e4m3 arm's fixed cost.
- **(iii) FAIL on one 128K cell** -- at B 32 x 128K x S_q 1 the FROST e4m3 scorer reads 16.8 us vs vLLM's fp8 scorer 16.0 us (-4.8 %) over the same 134 MB; the other five 128K cells read +10.4 .. +29.0 % in FROST's favour. A kernel finding (the fp8 `mma.sync` scorer arm at 1 M rows).
- **(iv) FAIL on 5 of 6 128K cells** -- the e4m3 comparison column (+10.5 .. +14.7 %) sits 0.3-2.3 points under the bf16 column (+12.9 .. +16.7 %): vLLM's own e4m3 lever (+2.2 .. +3.9 % at B <= 4) exceeds FROST's (+0.2 .. +2.7 %) because FROST's bf16 scorer is already 3.0-5.2 us there. FROST e4m3 remains +10.5 .. +14.7 % faster than vLLM e4m3 on each of those cells; the one cell where FROST trails vLLM (B 32 x 128K x S_q 4, -3.5 %) trails by -3.0 % under bf16 too (a known state of the block at B 32 x S_q 4, not this lever's).
- Control pairs within 0.54 % on every cell; clock verdict CLEAN on every cell; no exit 124.

The function is opt-in by dtype (`index_cache_dtype=torch.float8_e4m3fn`); **bf16 stays the default and the reference**; the e4m3 column is a different selection function (3 mantissa bits) and is labelled so.

### Limitations (first run)

- The 13 rows above were measured on one GPU; the node's allocation ended early with a node failure, so the remaining 6 page-16 cells and the four page-32 / 64 twins were measured in a completion run on a second GPU of the same class (212 SMs @ the 2376 MHz lock, its own measured HBM pin 13030.8 GB/s) -- reported in the section below, in its own table, never merged with the rows above (absolute times differ by ~1-2 us between the two GPUs at B 1; every speed-up, lever and pair is in-process).
- The per-row list agreement with vLLM's own selection (96.7-100 %) is a caption statistic, never a gate; the two prefills round the compressed keys differently.
- The vLLM arm's own timed closures are not bitwise across launches (its split-K attention) on every non-identity cell; recorded, never a refusal for a baseline.

**The build-order control (B 1 x 8K x S_q 1).** The first run's two no-loss misses were both at B 1 x 8K (-1.1 / -1.0 %), where the e4m3 arm is the FIRST-built FROST arm of every process; a first-built-slot bias of 0.05-0.3 us had been measured on this tree's arms before. One extra process ran the same cell with the bf16 twin built FIRST and the e4m3 arm second (the e4m3 arm kept as the control twin): vLLM e4m3 38.7 us | FROST e4m3 37.1 us (control pair +0.13 %) | FROST bf16 36.6 us | vLLM bf16 38.5 us -> lever **-1.3 % (-0.50 us)** against -1.1 % (-0.38 us) in the original order. **The B 1 x 8K loss is therefore not a measurement-order artefact**: with the bf16 twin in the first slot the e4m3 arm reads slower still, so bar (i)'s miss at B 1 x 8K belongs to the e4m3 path itself (the fixed cost of its small prepare / score / top-k kernels at a 0.26 MB cache; the scorer census reads 2.5 vs 2.3 us here). This process is a control, not a row of record.

### Verdict after the completion run

All 19 page-16 cells and the four page twins are measured (13 + 6 + 4, across the two GPUs; the control beside). **The verdict is unchanged in kind: (ii) PASS, (v) PASS on every cell of both runs; (i) FAIL on the two B 1 x 8K cells only -- now confirmed by the build-order control -- and within the band on the other 17 cells and the four twins; (iii) FAIL on one 128K cell; (iv) FAIL on 5 of 6 128K cells.** bf16 stays the default and the reference; the e4m3 cache is opt-in by dtype.

- **The two B 1 x 8K cells read -1.1 / -1.0 %** against the bf16 cache (bar (i)'s 1 % no-loss band; -0.38 us each).  The build-order
  control (the bf16 twin built first, the e4m3 arm second) reads -1.3 % there, so the loss is the e4m3 path's own: the fixed cost of its
  small prepare / score / top-k kernels at a 0.26 MB cache, where halving the bytes buys nothing (the scorer census reads 2.5 vs 2.3 us).

  B 1 x 8K gains nothing from the e4m3 cache and keeps bf16.
- At B 32 x 128K x S_q 1 the e4m3 scorer reads 16.8 us against the serving baseline's fp8 scorer's 16.0 us over the same 134 MB (the other
  five 128K cells +10.4 .. +29.0 % in this scorer's favour): a kernel finding on the fp8 `mma.sync` arm at 1 M rows, not a blocker.
- The top commit's message was written before the gate and still ends with "performance is not yet measured"; the docs, the tracker and
  the `QsaSpec.index_cache_dtype` docstring in the same commit carry the measured sentence.
