Summary

Make the bounded-workspace backward from #1781 available through cudnn.ops.qsa_indexed_backward for 12Q/1KV packed THD workloads. Callers declare selection_mode="causal_topk" and pass device cu_seqlens for packed inputs; optional max_seq_len bounds document lengths. The kernel consumes the public forward's FP32 output and head-major LSE directly.

The default remains general: arbitrary supported block ordering, padding holes, empty rows, and its nonfinite fallback keep their existing behavior. Shape alone never selects the canonical backend. The new mode requires finite operands, exactly the top-512 complete four-token blocks plus causal tail, width 2052, scale 1/16, and the CUDA 13 DSL compiler for sparse execution. These device-value relationships are documented caller contracts; there is no host readback. Existing positional signatures and the bitmap/Miles API remain intact.

Extend the unchanged-Relax benchmark to exercise this public route, compare the general indexed backward on identical saved state, and time combined forward-plus-backward directly. Indexed validation now gathers tokens without allocating a quadratic bitmap. Reports include correctness before/after timing, source/input hashes, allocation identity, compiler versions, GPU limits, and peak extra allocation.

Related: #1739, #1774, #1781. Shared DSA scorer/top-k remains in place.

Validation

  • ComputeLab production B300 SXM6 AC, SM103 / 148 SMs, MIG disabled, default and maximum 1100W power limit; PyTorch 2.14.1+cu130, cuDNN 9.29, DSL 4.8 with compiler CUDA 13.4.
  • pytest -c test/python/pytest.ini -v -m L0 test/python/QSA/cutedsl/test_qsa_indexed_training.py: 16 passed, including 32K single/packed sparse windows, native saved state, replay that removes/restores sparse rows, general-selection isolation, and existing regressions. A final metadata-guard addition passed the focused options test.
  • pytest -q benchmark/qsa/test_reference.py benchmark/qsa/test_benchmark_qsa.py: 4 passed. The direct-index oracle is checked against independent dense PyTorch autograd.
  • Changed-file pre-commit run and git diff --check: passed. Optional-diagnostic success, missing executable, nonzero exit and timeout paths were checked; the real ComputeLab snapshot is preserved.
  • Final-head ComputeLab B300 benchmark smoke: packed lengths (1,2,3) and (3,13,17) both pass all six outputs, the general-backward control, and post-timing checks.
  • Same-input Relax comparisons at 8K, 32K, 64K, 128K single and packed: all six outputs pass independent FP32 checks and post-timing checks for both implementations and the general backward control. No local engineering-board performance is used.

Warm full public calls, medians of 14 CUDA-event samples across two reversed-order rounds; three warmups per arm. Combined calls are measured directly. Allocations, metadata, preparation and casts are included; compilation, selector/top-k, route expansion and TP are excluded. Packed lengths are 43691, 43691, 43690. Relax backward uses BK=32, stages=3, warps=4, exactly as explicitly set by the pinned public Relax benchmark script. This is synthetic attention, not training E2E.

At 128K, canonical backward workspace is about 2.487 GiB (0.376 GiB reusable sparse records). Measured peak extra allocation, including outputs, is 3.362 GiB versus 2.884 GiB for FE general and 2.625 GiB for Relax. The bounded two-pass path is faster but still uses more memory than those two current alternatives.

Measurements were collected at ec83d86. The later review fixes only handle optional diagnostic failures and release selector temporaries outside timing; the QSA implementation, input RNG operations, oracle, and timed calls are unchanged. Raw reports preserve their original hashes.

📝 Walkthrough

The indexed QSA backward API adds an opt-in causal-top-k mode with packed-sequence metadata and dispatches eligible calls to the two-pass implementation. The benchmark adds mode selection, token-gather reference support, correctness checks, and timing and provenance reporting.

Changes: QSA causal-top-k backward

Layer / File(s) Summary
Public dispatch contract and validation
python/cudnn/QSA/indexed/api.py, test/python/QSA/cutedsl/test_qsa_indexed_training.py, docs/fe-oss-apis/qsa*.md
qsa_indexed_backward accepts keyword-only causal-top-k and sequence-bound options. It validates the mode, width, scale, and bounds before dispatching eligible calls to the two-pass implementation. Tests and API documentation cover the contract and dispatch behavior.
Indexed token-gather reference
benchmark/qsa/reference.py, benchmark/qsa/test_reference.py
The reference forward and backward functions accept optional token selection indices and apply row bounds during gathering. A CPU test compares reference results with dense attention and autograd.
Benchmark modes, checks, and reporting
benchmark/qsa/benchmark_relax.py, benchmark/qsa/README.md
The benchmark adds causal-top-k and general-backward comparison options, passes packed-sequence metadata to indexed backward, and reports correctness checks, timing, and environment metadata.

Explanation

The description follows the repository template closely: it has a Summary, Validation (Testing), ComputeLab B300 performance details, and a completed Before submitting checklist. It covers what changed and why (exposing the bounded-workspace causal-top-k backward through cudnn.ops.qsa_indexed_backward for 12Q/1KV packed THD workloads). It also states the API and compatibility impact: default general mode unchanged, positional signatures and bitmap/Miles API intact, CUDA 13 DSL compiler needed for sparse execution. The Affected area section is missing, the Related issues section is only partly covered by 'Related: #1739, #1774, #1781', and the Why section is not labeled as such, but the substance is present.

benchmark/qsa/benchmark_relax.py:104
🚀 Performance & Scalability | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Release the selector-scoring temporaries before building the benchmark state.

logits, visible, values, and ids remain bound to the final scoring iteration. At the maximum supported length, the final logits and visible tensors retain tens of MiB while the benchmark builds indices and runs correctness checks. This reduces available GPU memory and can cause an avoidable OOM. Delete these tensors at the end of the inner scoring loop so the all-short-sequence case remains valid.

In the inner scoring loop, release the per-iteration `logits`, `visible`,
`values`, and `ids` tensors after their final use so they do not remain
allocated while benchmark state and correctness checks are built; ensure this
cleanup also works when all sequences are short.

Addressed the second review's outside-diff memory-retention note in c053095: selector logits, visible, values, and ids are released immediately after their last use inside each scoring iteration. Packs whose documents are all shorter than four tokens skip that loop entirely, so no unbound deletion is introduced. Changed-file pre-commit, Python compilation and git diff --check passed.

The GPU results in the PR were collected at ec83d86. The two follow-ups only make diagnostics optional and release input-generation temporaries outside timing; QSA source, input generation/RNG operations, FP32 oracle, and timed calls are unchanged. The complete raw reports retain their original source and harness hashes.

Codex bot review · model: gpt-6-astra

Reviewed c053095b1c6e against base cfcb846a295f.

Reviewed the explicit causal_topk route, packed metadata contract and benchmark changes. The default general path remains separate, saved FP32 output/LSE pass through directly, and the new options preserve positional calls. No actionable defect found.

Validation: Built a matching extension and ran all 16 indexed API L0 tests on SM100 with CuTe DSL 4.7.1 and its CUDA 13 compiler: 16 passed, no skips. This covers sparse 32K inputs, packed boundaries, changed-boundary graph replay, general-mode isolation and option rejection. Four benchmark host tests passed, including the direct-index oracle checked against independent dense autograd. A separate same-input public-call comparison at 8K and 32K packed tokens matched all three gradients before and after timing. GPU time improved for the opt-in route in both local cases; host-call time was measured separately. With an actual CuTe DSL 4.6.2 installation, the new mode raises the version-naming error before importing the kernel. Style, Docs and Security checks passed.

Limitations: Local GPU tests used an SM100 engineering device; they do not reproduce the author's qualified B300 or Relax performance results. The current standard PR CI target skips this mode because of its DSL/platform coverage. Used direct native validation instead of starting a run that would skip the affected GPU tests.

Approved: no P0 or high-risk P1 found. Remaining findings stay with the owner; merge timing stays with the owner.
