[https://nvbugs/6308608][fix] Read request media from local paths only under an allowed directory - #21183
trtllm-serve now rejects request-supplied local paths and file:// URIs unless TRTLLM_MEDIA_ALLOWED_LOCAL_PATH names an allowed directory. The request-side loader confines resolved regular files to that directory and enforces the 200 MiB limit. Offline async_load retains its local-file behavior. Remote and data: URL handling remains unchanged.
The server logs the policy. The serving documentation and multimodal client example explain the setting. Deployments that send local paths must configure the allowed directory. Review findings and severity counts were not supplied. Reported CI results are mixed, and the supplied comments do not identify the failures.
QA Engineer Review
tests/unittest/llmapi/apps/test_chat_utils.py adds TestRequestLocalMediaPaths. The cases cover local-path policy and rejection paths, including symlinks, non-regular files, size limits, and directory configuration. They also cover allowed-file loading and unchanged remote and data: URL handling. Five other test files update server environments for local fixtures. The CPU CI list includes test_chat_utils.py; the L40S list includes test_single_chat_session_image_embeds; and the A10 list includes multimodal serve and MMEncoder example selectors. No matching list entry was found for test_video_url or the VLM guided-decoding test. Coverage verdict: needs follow-up. CI reports include both successes and failures, and the failed tests are unidentified.
Per-File QA Perspective
docs/source/commands/trtllm-serve/trtllm-serve.rst — Documents the local-media setting and directory restriction. Verify that the documented behavior matches the server.
tensorrt_llm/serve/chat_utils.py — Routes local image, video, and audio_url references through the restricted loader. Verify remote and data: URL behavior, and confirm that input_audio remains unchanged.
tensorrt_llm/serve/openai_server.py — Logs the local-media policy at server initialization. Verify startup behavior when the setting is unset or invalid.
examples/serve/openai_chat_client_for_multimodal.py — Explains that local media paths refer to the server filesystem and require the setting. Verify the guidance is accurate.

Description
trtllm-serve accepts media for image_url, video_url and audio_url chat content parts (also reached from the Responses API input_image part and the Anthropic adapter) as http(s) URLs, base64 data: URLs, file:// URIs and
bare filesystem paths.
This change adds an operator setting for the last two forms:
TRTLLM_MEDIA_ALLOWED_LOCAL_PATH unset (the default): a file:// URI or bare path in a request is refused with HTTP 400 and a message naming the variable.
TRTLLM_MEDIA_ALLOWED_LOCAL_PATH=<directory>: the reference is resolved and read only when it is a regular file inside that directory and within the existing 200 MiB media size limit.
http(s) and data: URLs, and the offline Python API loaders, are unchanged.
The serve tests that send local test-data paths now start the server with the variable set to their test data directory. The trtllm-serve docs describe the variable.
Breaking change for deployments that send local paths
Before this change a request could name a file on the server as a file:// URI or a bare path and it was read. Now such a reference is refused with HTTP 400 unless the server is started with TRTLLM_MEDIA_ALLOWED_LOCAL_PATH=<directory>, and then only regular files whose resolved path is inside that directory are read. Deployments whose clients send local paths, including examples/serve/openai_chat_client_for_multimodal.py when LLM_MODELS_ROOT is set, must set the variable to the directory that holds their media. http(s) and data: URLs are unaffected.
Test Coverage
tests/unittest/llmapi/apps/test_chat_utils.py::TestRequestLocalMediaPaths (CPU): the default refusal for all three part types, loading inside the allowed directory, refusal of references that resolve elsewhere or are not regular files, and unchanged handling of data: and http(s) URLs.
Existing unit tests for chat utils, media IO and the Responses and Anthropic adapters pass.
The multimodal serve tests (_test_openai_chat_multimodal, _test_openai_chat_vlm_guided_decoding, _test_trtllm_serve_multimodal_example, _test_openai_mmencoder) pass on H100 with the variable set.

Walkthrough
The serving path checks local image, video, and audio references against a configured directory before loading them. Local reads are limited to regular files within that directory and to 200 MiB. Tests and documentation cover the policy.

Add a request-path test for the local-file size rejection.
The resolver rejects local media over _MAX_RESPONSE_BYTES at tensorrt_llm/inputs/media_io.py:957. The request path reaches this check through tensorrt_llm/serve/chat_utils.py:125. No test in the inspected suite sends an oversized local file through parse_chat_message_content_part and asserts that rejection. TestRequestLocalMediaPaths has no size case. The existing maximum allowed size tests call the media loaders directly, not the request path. A change that removes or weakens line 957 would not fail a request-path test.
Add this case to TestRequestLocalMediaPaths in tests/unittest/llmapi/apps/test_chat_utils.py:
The test lowers the limit below the size of a small PNG, so it does not need a 200 MiB file.

Add an oversized-local-file case to TestRequestLocalMediaPaths that sends a file
URL through _load and asserts parse_chat_message_content_part rejects it with a
ValueError indicating the maximum allowed size; lower _MAX_RESPONSE_BYTES below
the fixture file’s size so the test remains small.

Approving — the comments below are optional touch-ups, not blockers.
This closes the reported local-read paths for image_url/video_url/audio_url. I also checked the serve paths that do not go through _load_request_media: input_audio always builds a data: URL, and VisualGen references are base64-only, so neither needs the gate.
A few follow-ups:
Breaking default for existing users. Anyone who sends local paths to trtllm-serve today (including examples/serve/openai_chat_client_for_multimodal.py when LLM_MODELS_ROOT is set) will now get a 400. Please say this explicitly in the PR description so it reaches the release notes. A one-line comment in that example pointing at TRTLLM_MEDIA_ALLOWED_LOCAL_PATH would also help users who run it by hand.
Defense in depth. The gate lives only in chat_utils._load_request_media. BaseMediaIO.async_load still dispatches ""/file schemes to load_file unconditionally, so any new serve-side caller that calls async_load directly bypasses the check. One option is to make local loading opt-in on the media IO object (for example, a constructor flag that _make_media_io leaves off). Another is a short comment on async_load saying request-supplied URLs must go through resolve_allowed_local_media_path.
Automatically added "ci: full pre-merge approved" because this PR has satisfied the required GitHub review approvals. Unresolved review conversations and other required checks remain independent merge requirements.
…nd decode its bytes
`read_allowed_local_media` replaces `resolve_allowed_local_media_path`: it
opens the resolved path once with O_NOFOLLOW and O_NONBLOCK, runs the
regular-file and size checks on the open descriptor and returns the bytes.
`BaseMediaIO.async_load_allowed_local_file` reads and decodes in one executor
step, and `_load_request_media` uses it for local references, so the decoder
never reopens a path and the filesystem checks no longer run on the event
loop.

… of request errors
When TRTLLM_MEDIA_ALLOWED_LOCAL_PATH is set to something that is not a

…ugh its open descriptor
A request-supplied local file was read into memory and decoded from bytes,
which costs a copy per in-flight request and, for audio, makes libsndfile
read through per-chunk Python callbacks that serialize on the GIL under
concurrent requests. Keep the single open and the fstat checks on the
descriptor, but let the decoder read the file through the descriptor's own
path (/proc/self/fd/<n>) with the ordinary load_file, so the request's path
is never looked up again and nothing is copied. Where the platform has no
such path the open file is still read into memory and decoded from bytes.
Tests cover decoding the opened file after its path was replaced, and the
in-memory fallback.
