[https://nvbugs/6971730][fix] Keep Inductor's async-compile pool alive - #21007
_prepare_environment() now sets TORCHINDUCTOR_QUIESCE_ASYNC_COMPILE_POOL to "0" before framework initialization. os.environ.setdefault preserves an explicit user value.
This changes the default Inductor async-compile pool behavior and may increase host-memory use. The supplied evidence does not establish the size of that increase or report test-run results.
QA Engineer Review
tests/unittest/test_unified_cache.py adds two tests. They check the default value during environment preparation and preservation of an explicit "1" setting.
The new tests cover both unset and explicit-value paths. No test-list changes are shown. Coverage verdict: sufficient for the environment-variable behavior; runtime impact remains to be verified.
Per-File QA Perspective
tensorrt_llm/_bootstrap.py: Verify the default is set before PyTorch imports and that explicit environment values remain effective. The setting may increase host-memory use.
tests/unittest/test_unified_cache.py: Covers defaulting and explicit override behavior. The test file is not an integration test, so CI or manual-QA integration-list status does not apply.
Description
NVBug 6971730: the GB200 perf-sanity case disagg_upload-gen_only-gb200_deepseek-r1-fp4_8k1k_con1_ctx1_dep4_gen1_tep8_eplb0_mtp3_ccb-NIXL intermittently times out with Endpoint http://...:9159/health did not become ready within 3600 seconds. The GEN server (TP8, MTP3) hangs in the num_tokens=5, num_gen_requests=1 mixed-batch attention warmup.
Root cause
_get_draft_tokens_from_gathered (tensorrt_llm/_torch/speculative/interface.py) is decorated with @torch.compile(options={"max-autotune": True}). The MTP draft loop calls it right after a TP allgather. It is first compiled during the num_tokens=4 warmup, and the mixed batch recompiles it about 63 s later.
With its default quiesce_async_compile_pool=True, Inductor shuts down its async-compile worker pool once it has been idle for 60 s. The idle check runs every 30 s, so the shutdown lands 60–90 s after the last job. A compile job submitted while that shutdown is in progress never gets a reply, and the parent waits on it with no timeout. The rank blocks inside torch.compile, and its TP peers spin in the next collective (GPU utilization 0% vs. 100%).
Evidence from a reproduced hang:
Python stacks of all 8 GEN ranks show the stuck ranks waiting on the compile result.
The compile sidecar is idle in _recv_msg, and its freshly forked pool is idle.
On the stuck node, the first compile's Inductor cache entries are timestamped 03:42:37.6 and the recompile's 03:43:41.0 (+63 s).
Fix
tensorrt_llm/_bootstrap.py defaults TORCHINDUCTOR_QUIESCE_ASYNC_COMPILE_POOL=0 with setdefault, so an explicit setting still wins.
The variable is an env_name_force Inductor config. It is read when torch._inductor.config is first imported and overrides any value set in code later, so it has to be in the environment before torch is imported.
The bootstrap runs before that point in every process that imports tensorrt_llm, including MPI and Ray workers.
Cost: the compile pool (a sidecar plus up to 32 workers per process) stays resident after warmup instead of exiting once compiling has been idle for 60 s. This is a fixed footprint, not a leak.
On an A40 with torch 2.12, a 16-worker pool held about 2.2 GB PSS, and that stayed flat while idle.
Over 300 compiles, the pool's growth was identical with quiescing on and off.
Extrapolating to 32 workers gives roughly 3.5 GB of host memory per rank. This is an estimate; it was not measured on GB200.
If the footprint matters, a possible follow-up is to call shutdown_compile_workers() from the executor thread after warmup. It runs on the thread that submits compiles, so it cannot race with a submission.
No waivers exist for this bug.
Test Coverage
Unit tests (CPU-only, run in l0_cpu through tests/unittest/test_unified_cache.py):
Results: the whole file passed (17 tests) in the failing run's CI image with this _bootstrap.py. In that image, import tensorrt_llm yields TORCHINDUCTOR_QUIESCE_ASYNC_COMPILE_POOL=0 and torch._inductor.config.quiesce_async_compile_pool == False.
Reproduction on OCI GB200 used the failing run's wheel and image, the CI GEN environment, and cold caches. The hang occurred in about 1 of 15 attempts.
Standalone stress test with the Inductor build from the CI image. Each iteration compiles a gather/argmax helper with max-autotune, idles for about the quiesce threshold (lowered to 2 s), then recompiles:
Default: 6 of 16 processes hung within 214 iterations.
TORCHINDUCTOR_QUIESCE_ASYNC_COMPILE_POOL=0: 0 of 8 processes hung over 1188 iterations.
End-to-end GEN server on GB200 with this default set (confirmed in the rank processes' environment): warmup completed (num_tokens=4 in 1064 s cold, num_tokens=5 in 1.0 s) and the server came up.
This is a single pass; with a hang rate of about 1 in 15, the stress A/B above is the main evidence.

Gen-server warmup of DeepSeek-R1 MTP (TP8) intermittently hung in the
mixed context+generation attention warmup. The mixed batch recompiles the
torch.compile'd MTP draft sampler about 60 s after its first compile, which
is when Inductor quiesces its async-compile worker pool. A compile job
submitted across that quiesce is never answered, so the rank waits forever
inside torch.compile while its peers spin in the next collective.
Default TORCHINDUCTOR_QUIESCE_ASYNC_COMPILE_POOL to 0 before torch is
imported so the pool stays up; an explicit setting still wins.

Bootstrap now defaults TORCHINDUCTOR_QUIESCE_ASYNC_COMPILE_POOL to "0" when it is unset. It preserves an existing value. Tests cover both behaviors.

Summary
Set and test the compile-pool default tensorrt_llm/_bootstrap.py, tests/unittest/test_unified_cache.py
Bootstrap sets the environment variable during environment preparation when it is unset. Tests verify the default and preservation of an explicit value.
The change is likely mergeable, but a small ordering regression test should be added to prevent the warmup timeout from returning unnoticed.

The description follows the template well. It has a clear Description section with root cause, fix, and cost tradeoff. The Test Coverage section lists new tests, the reproduction, the stress A/B test, and the end-to-end run. The PR checklist is present and checked. The description clearly explains what and why. Minor gap: the template's Description and Test Coverage placeholders are replaced with detailed content, which is acceptable. The new test_prepare_environment_keeps_inductor_compile_pool_alive checks only the final value of TORCHINDUCTOR_QUIESCE_ASYNC_COMPILE_POOL. It stubs the four later setup steps with no-ops, and it does not record call order. Moving _keep_inductor_compile_pool_alive() below any of those steps would leave the test passing, even though the setting could then be read too late. The module docstring requires phase 1 to run before torch. The existing test_prepare_environment_configures_cache_first checks order, but it does not include this helper.
Stub the helper so it records its call, then extend the existing order assertion:
The default-value test stays as written. This change adds the ordering check without changing that test.
