[TRTLLM-15765][refactor] Remove the ModelEngine ABC and settle the executor interface - #20996
Replaced the abstract ModelEngine and its PyTorchModelEngine implementation with one concrete ModelEngine. No compatibility alias remains; the objective identifies tensorrt_llm._torch as internal.
Added read-only CUDA graph batch-size and padding properties. Updated engine references and KV-cache setup to use the new interface.
Made EncoderConfig inherit from RunnerConfig, removing the cast in encoder initialization. Updated decoder beam-history handling to use the runner’s stored mapping.
The supplied objective reports unchanged outputs, scheduling, and resource ownership. No current review findings were supplied, so review severity counts are unavailable.
The author reports 1,337 passing unit tests and 14 passing end-to-end cases; three unit tests were skipped for Blackwell/SM100 requirements. On a follow-up base, pre-commit, Python syntax checks, and git diff --check passed, but cluster tests were not rerun. EP≥2 MoE warmup end-to-end testing remains unrun.
Supplied CI comments report an aborted run, a failed run, and a later successful PR job paired with a failed pipeline. The supplied context does not establish resolution or provide failure details.
QA Engineer Review
Modified tests cover engine construction and warmup, encoder configuration, CUDA graph KV-cache behavior, LoRA reinitialization, multimodal execution, executor behavior, and selected model paths.
The changed integration test is listed in tests/integration/test_lists/test-db/l0_h100.yml and tests/integration/test_lists/test-db/l0_dgx_h100.yml. Manual-QA list status was not verified.
Coverage verdict: needs follow-up. The author reports broad test results, but cluster tests were not rerun on the follow-up base, EP≥2 MoE warmup lacks end-to-end validation, and the supplied CI comments include a failed pipeline without details or resolution.

Description
ModelEngine was an ABC with a single implementation, and the executors already reached past it for everything they used, so the ABC goes and PyTorchModelEngine is renamed to ModelEngine. There is no compatibility alias, since tensorrt_llm._torch is internal. Test files, test classes and test IDs keep their old names, so the existing waiver still matches.
The engine stays between the executors and the runner: it builds the runner's inputs, coordinates warmup and resource rebuilds, and installs the late hooks. Handing the runner to the executors directly would move that coordination with it. Two things settle the remaining entries:
The resolved CUDA graph batch sizes and padding flag become read-only properties, so the KV cache creator stops probing private fields with getattr.
EncoderConfig now subclasses RunnerConfig, so both encoder configs inherit it singly and _initialize_encoder no longer needs a cast.
The Model Engine section of arch_overview.md now describes the engine as the runner's owner and coordinator rather than as the place the forward pass runs. Outputs, scheduling and resource ownership are unchanged.
Test Coverage
tests/unittest/_torch/executor/engine/, test_pytorch_model_engine.py, test_pytorch_model_engine_warmup.py and test_py_executor.py, whose patch targets name the renamed class.
tests/unittest/_torch/executor/kv_cache/test_kv_cache_budget_split.py for the CUDA graph coverage warning that reads the new properties.
tests/unittest/_torch/executor/engine/test_encoder.py and tests/unittest/llmapi/test_llm_encode.py for the encoder config.
Before rebasing onto main, each code commit was validated on 2×H100; the last commit changes only documentation. The rename is AST-identical apart from the name. The final validation included 1337 passing unit tests and 14 passing end-to-end cases covering decoder (including TP2, guided decoding and Eagle3), BART, T5 and Whisper. Three unit tests were skipped for Blackwell/SM100 hardware requirements. Encoder tests also passed before the documentation-only commit.
The original changes were rebased onto main at 011316470c, which includes #20851. A follow-up adds the return annotation to the new beam-history registration hook and removes the redundant engine capability check while retaining the sampler capability check. Pre-commit, Python syntax checks and git diff --check pass for the follow-up; cluster tests have not been rerun on this base. EP≥2 MoE warmup end to end has not been run.

Remove the unsupported partial-engine fallback test.
ModelEngine defines both CUDA-graph properties as part of its concrete interface. The test's Mock() does not represent a supported engine and fabricates those properties, so it provides no valid regression coverage.
