Description

Problem. Qwen3.8-Flash-Next has 2 KV heads, head_dim 256 and a 128-dim bf16 QSA index K. With an FP8 KV cache at TP ≥ 2 (one KV head per rank), the FP8 K/V page is the same size as the index-K page. KVCacheManagerV2 coalesces a lifecycle's buffers by page size, so index K landed in the K/V pool. Each QSA layer then put three pages into the K/V slot, and _kv_pool_mapping_offset failed its exact_div for odd layers. NVFP4 collides the same way at two heads per rank (TP1, attention DP). Per-token bytes, with 32 tokens per block:

KV dtype K (= V), 2 heads/rank K, 1 head/rank index K
bf16 1024 512 256
fp8 512 256 256
nvfp4 256 128 256

The fix itself is already on main. #20276 packs the QSA side planes (every local layer's index K plus the position page) into one per-slot buffer whenever a side page could match any K/V or block-scale page size. The QSA cache manager is shared by the built-in (modeling_qwen4_exp.py) and modeling_v2 paths, so that change also fixes the built-in model. #20276 also enables FP8 context FMHA for an NVFP4 KV cache, and adds a separate draft page table for the QSA MTP draft loop.

This PR adds what #20276 left out:

  • Descriptive error in KVCacheManagerV2._kv_pool_mapping_offset. It used a bare exact_div assertion, which names nothing and is stripped under python -O; the offset would then be silently wrong. It now raises a RuntimeError naming the cause (another buffer of the same page size coalesced into the K/V pool) and the override point.
  • Layout tests on the layouts that actually collide. test_qsa_cache_manager_layout.py built every manager at TP1 except in the disaggregation test. So the FP8 one-KV-head layout from the report was never checked against the attention op's addressing. The address and packing tests now run on rank 0 of TP1, TP2, TEP4, ADP2 and ADP4. The aliasing test also covers fp32, fp16 and bf16 SSM state. The disaggregation test spans all five layouts.
  • Negative test in test_kv_cache_v2_extra_buffers.py: a K/V-sized INDEX_KEY on every layer, without an offset override, must fail with the new error.
  • Two QA accuracy cases in TestQwen3_8_Flash_Next (added to qa/llm_function_core.txt only), using a new kv_cache_dtype argument. Each covers one collision layout on the NVFP4 checkpoint:
    • test_nvfp4_tep4_fp8kv_trtllm_ple_offload: TEP4 with FP8 KV, the reported case.
    • test_nvfp4_adp4_nvfp4kv_trtllm_ple_offload: ADP4 with NVFP4 KV.
    • Their GSM8K/MMLU references are new references/*.yaml entries.
  • The QSA cache manager docstring now names the FP8 one-KV-head collision next to the NVFP4 one.

Known limitation (unchanged). The packed side-plane size depends on the number of local QSA layers. Disaggregated peers with different PP splits therefore register different side-plane sizes, as with the existing position role.

Test Coverage

  • tests/unittest/_torch/attention/sparse/qsa/test_qsa_cache_manager_layout.py (GPU; already in l0_b300.yml through unittest/_torch/attention)
  • tests/unittest/_torch/executor/kv_cache/test_kv_cache_v2_extra_buffers.py::TestExtraBuffersCacheConfig::test_index_key_coalesced_into_kv_pool_needs_an_offset_override
  • accuracy/test_llm_api_pytorch.py::TestQwen3_8_Flash_Next::test_nvfp4_tep4_fp8kv_trtllm_ple_offload, ::test_nvfp4_adp4_nvfp4kv_trtllm_ple_offload (QA)

Results (GB300, 4 GPUs per node, this branch on top of 0f3e1d0)

Unit tests

  • test_qsa_cache_manager_layout.py + test_kv_cache_v2_extra_buffers.py: 110 passed.
  • test_qsa_sparse.py + test_qsa_runtime_wiring.py: 104 passed.

Reproduction. I built the 48-layer rank-0 trunk manager (12 QSA layers, 32 tokens per block) twice: once with the QSA cache manager from before #20276 (3fa0c60), and once with the one on main.

End to end (built-in modeling_qwen4_exp.py, LLM API)

  • Engine settings: TRTLLM MoE, CUDA graphs, chunked prefill, max_num_tokens 8192, max_seq_len 16384, block reuse off, PLE host offload.
  • Every config:
    • exits cleanly;
    • answers the short sanity prompts correctly;
    • retrieves 9/9 passkeys at ~3k/7k/12k tokens and three depths. These lengths are above the 2048-token dense budget, so every rank logs QSA exact sparse attention is active; NVFP4 KV is the exception, using the regular backend as before.
  • The GSM8K numbers below are on a fixed 250-sample subset, using the same prompt protocol as TestQwen3_8_Flash_Next.
Checkpoint Layout SSM KV fp8 KV nvfp4 KV auto
NVFP4 TEP4 bf16 95.6 95.6 96.4
NVFP4 TEP4 fp32 / fp16 97.0 / 95.4
NVFP4 ADP4 bf16 95.6 95.6 95.0
NVFP4 TP2 bf16 94.0 95.0
NVFP4 TP1 bf16 96.0 94.8 96.4
FP8 TEP4 bf16 96.4 95.0
FP8 TP2 bf16 94.4 95.6
bf16 TEP4 fp32 94.6 97.0
bf16 TEP4 fp16 / bf16 95.0 / 95.8
bf16 ADP4 bf16 94.6 94.6
  • MTP3, FP8 checkpoint. TEP4 uses a separate draft KV manager; ADP4 folds the draft layer into the target manager. Each cell gives avg_decoded_tokens_per_iter as short context / 8k context, then GSM8K:

    Layout KV fp8 KV auto
    TEP4 1.38/1.33, 94.4 1.34/1.34, 94.6
    ADP4 1.33/1.35, 96.0 1.30/1.29, 96.0

There is no long-context drop with the separate draft manager, and no illegal memory access.

  • QA references (full GSM8K / MMLU, TRTLLM_ACCURACY_NO_REFERENCE=1):

    • TEP4 FP8 KV: 95.49 / 87.33.
    • ADP4 NVFP4 KV: 96.02 / 87.21.
    • For comparison, the checkpoint's bf16-KV references are 96.36 / 87.50.

PR Checklist

  • Please check this after reviewing the above items as appropriate for this PR.

Dev Engineer Review

  • KVCacheManagerV2._kv_pool_mapping_offset now raises a descriptive RuntimeError when a layer’s K-buffer offset does not align with the K/V page stride. This makes the failure explicit and identifies the pool-layout issue and offset-override option.
  • The QSA cache-manager documentation clarifies when index-K pages match K/V page sizes and how side pages affect pool mapping and NVFP4 strides.
  • The Qwen3.8-Flash-Next evaluation helper accepts a KV-cache dtype. Two accuracy cases add TEP4 with FP8 KV and ADP4 with NVFP4 KV.
  • The stated limitation remains: disaggregated peers with different PP splits can register different packed side-plane sizes.

QA Engineer Review

  • Modified unit tests cover QSA cache layouts for TP1, TP2, TEP4, ADP2, and ADP4; SSM-state aliasing across fp32, fp16, and bf16; transfer-view metadata; and the misaligned K/V-pool error when an offset override is absent.
  • Modified integration test code adds two Qwen3.8-Flash-Next accuracy cases. The corresponding selectors are present in tests/integration/test_lists/qa/llm_function_core.txt. No changed selector was identified in a test-db/ CI list.
  • The supplied PR objectives report 110 passed for the cache-manager and extra-buffer unit tests, and 104 passed for the sparse-QSA and runtime-wiring unit tests. They also report clean end-to-end runs and 9/9 passkey retrieval. These results were not independently verified here.
  • Coverage verdict: sufficient for the described changes, based on the added regression test, expanded layout tests, and QA-listed accuracy cases.

Per-File QA Perspective

  • tensorrt_llm/_torch/attention/backends/sparse/qsa/cache_manager.py: Documentation changes clarify index-K page sizing and side-page effects. Verify that the described FP8 and NVFP4 page-layout conditions match supported runtime configurations.
  • tensorrt_llm/_torch/pyexecutor/kv_cache/kv_cache_manager_v2.py: Misaligned K-buffer offsets now fail with RuntimeError instead of relying on exact_div assertion behavior. Verify both the error path and successful exact-multiple offsets.
  • tests/unittest/_torch/attention/sparse/qsa/test_qsa_cache_manager_layout.py: Expands layout, aliasing, and transfer-view coverage across five parallelism configurations and three SSM dtypes. This unit test is not listed in the integration CI or manual-QA lists.
  • tests/unittest/_torch/executor/kv_cache/test_kv_cache_v2_extra_buffers.py: Adds a negative test for K/V-sized INDEX_KEY pages without the required offset override. This unit test is not listed in the integration CI or manual-QA lists.
  • tests/integration/defs/accuracy/test_llm_api_pytorch.py: Adds TEP4/FP8-KV and ADP4/NVFP4-KV evaluation cases and passes the selected cache dtype into KvCacheConfig. Both selectors are listed for manual QA in qa/llm_function_core.txt.
  • tests/integration/defs/accuracy/references/gsm8k.yaml: Adds GSM8K accuracy references for the two Qwen3.8-Flash-Next configurations.
  • tests/integration/defs/accuracy/references/mmlu.yaml: Adds MMLU accuracy references for the two configurations.
  • tests/integration/test_lists/qa/llm_function_core.txt: Adds both new accuracy selectors to the manual-QA list. The changes do not add these selectors to a test-db/ CI list.

…layouts on TP/TEP/ADP

KVCacheManagerV2 coalesces a lifecycle's buffers by page size, so an extra
buffer the size of a K/V page lands in the K/V pool and leaves no uniform
per-layer offset. _kv_pool_mapping_offset checked this with a bare
exact_div assertion, which names nothing and is stripped under python -O.
Raise a RuntimeError that names the cause and the override instead.

Build the Qwen3.8-Flash-Next QSA trunk and draft managers on rank 0 of TP1,
TP2, TEP4, ADP2 and ADP4 in the layout tests, so the FP8 one-KV-head case
(index-K page == K page) is checked against the attention op's addressing,
and cover the fp32/fp16/bf16 SSM state dtypes in the aliasing test. Add a
negative test for the new error, and let TestQwen3_8_Flash_Next choose the
KV cache dtype.

…NVFP4 KV caches

Cover the two layouts where a K/V page is the size of a QSA index-K page:
TEP4 with an FP8 KV cache (one KV head per rank) and attention-DP ADP4
with an NVFP4 KV cache (two KV heads per rank), both on the NVFP4
checkpoint without MTP. The cases go into the QA function list only.

TRTLLM_ACCURACY_NO_REFERENCE=1: 95.49/87.33 for TEP4 FP8 KV and

Walkthrough

The KV cache manager now validates pool-mapping offset alignment and reports layout mismatches. Unit tests cover additional parallel layouts and SSM cache dtypes. Qwen3.8-Flash-Next integration evaluations cover FP8 and NVFP4 KV caches, with added GSM8K and MMLU accuracy references.

Changes

KV cache layout and evaluation coverage

Layer / File(s) Summary
KV pool mapping validation
tensorrt_llm/_torch/attention/backends/sparse/qsa/cache_manager.py, tensorrt_llm/_torch/pyexecutor/kv_cache/kv_cache_manager_v2.py, tests/unittest/_torch/executor/kv_cache/test_kv_cache_v2_extra_buffers.py
_kv_pool_mapping_offset now checks that the address offset is divisible by the K/V page stride. It raises a RuntimeError for a non-aligned offset. The class documentation describes page-layout constraints, and a regression test covers the error.
Sparse cache layout tests
tests/unittest/_torch/attention/sparse/qsa/test_qsa_cache_manager_layout.py
The tests cover TP1, TP2, TEP4, ADP2, and ADP4 layouts. They use layout-specific KV head counts and compare transfer-view metadata across layouts.

Exercise SSM storage in the trunk aliasing case.

ssm_dtype changes the trunk SSM allocation, but the current write/read loop never includes an SSM view. An SSM-to-side-plane overlap can therefore pass. Draft managers have no Mamba layers, so keep only one SSM dtype for draft cases.

Add cm.get_ssm_states(0) for trunk cases. Use a valid slot for each view because the manager sizes SSM and attention pools separately.
