Description

Fixes https://nvbugs/6858845.

NoKVCacheRunner.prepare_inputs asserted that the attention metadata was VanillaAttentionMetadata or TrtllmAttentionMetadata before calling prepare() without a KV cache manager. Because setup_attn_metadata always builds that metadata with kv_cache_manager=None, the assertion ran on every call. So with attn_backend: FLASHINFER, the multimodal encoder-only runner raised on every forward. The pooling runner uses the same prepare_inputs.

FlashInferAttentionMetadata.prepare() already has its own kv_cache_manager is None branch for context-only batches. It asserts num_generations == 0 and plans the ragged prefill wrapper, and the no-KV-cache runner only schedules context requests.

This change removes the runner-side type assertion, so each backend's prepare() handles the no-KV-cache case itself. The Vanilla and TRTLLM paths are unchanged.

Test Coverage

  • tests/unittest/_torch/multimodal/test_mm_encoder_standalone.py::test_encoder_flashinfer_attention_matches_trtllm (new): runs the Qwen2.5-VL-3B multimodal encoder with TRTLLM and with FLASHINFER attention on the three test images. It checks that the embedding shapes match and that the cosine similarity is above 0.99. On H200 it fails before this change (RequestError from the removed assertion) and passes after.
  • tests/unittest/_torch/executor/engine/test_no_kv_cache.py: removes the monkeypatch that let the stub metadata pass the removed assertion. The existing prepare_inputs tests now run with a metadata type that is neither Vanilla nor TRTLLM.
  • With this change on H200: tests/unittest/_torch/multimodal/test_mm_encoder_standalone.py and tests/unittest/_torch/executor/engine all pass (239 passed).

Dev Engineer Review

NoKVCacheRunner.prepare_inputs now calls prepare() whenever kv_cache_manager is None, without restricting the metadata type. This allows attention backends to handle no-KV-cache metadata. Verify encoder-only and pooling requests with FlashInfer, and confirm Vanilla and TRTLLM behavior remains unchanged.

QA Engineer Review

The change adds test_encoder_flashinfer_attention_matches_trtllm and modifies the no-KV-cache runner tests. The new test compares Qwen2.5-VL encoder embeddings across three images, checks matching shapes, and requires cosine similarity above 0.99. The CI selectors found for this test file do not include the new test; no manual-QA listing was found. The reported 239-test result was not independently verified. Coverage verdict: needs follow-up.

Per-File QA Perspective

  • tensorrt_llm/_torch/pyexecutor/engine/runners/no_kv_cache.py: Verify that metadata with no KV-cache manager reaches backend prepare() for FlashInfer, Vanilla, and TRTLLM.
  • tests/unittest/_torch/executor/engine/test_no_kv_cache.py: The helper no longer patches the metadata type to satisfy the removed assertion. Verify the no-KV-cache input preparation tests still pass.
  • tests/unittest/_torch/multimodal/test_mm_encoder_standalone.py: The new test compares FlashInfer and TRTLLM encoder outputs by shape and cosine similarity. The CI selectors found for this file do not select the new test.

…attention

NoKVCacheRunner.prepare_inputs asserted that the attention metadata
was Vanilla or TRTLLM before calling prepare() without a KV cache
manager. FlashInferAttentionMetadata.prepare() has its own
kv_cache_manager=None branch for context-only batches, and the no-KV-
cache runner only schedules context requests. Because
setup_attn_metadata always builds the metadata with
kv_cache_manager=None, prepare_inputs raised on every call when
attn_backend was FLASHINFER.

Remove the runner-side type assertion, so each backend's prepare()
handles the no-KV-cache case itself.

Tests:
- test_mm_encoder_standalone.py: new
  test_encoder_flashinfer_attention_matches_trtllm (Qwen2.5-VL-3B
encoder-only, FLASHINFER vs TRTLLM embeddings, cosine > 0.99).
- test_no_kv_cache.py: drop the monkeypatch that made the stub
  metadata pass the removed assertion.

Walkthrough

The no-KV-cache runner no longer restricts attention metadata types when no KV-cache manager is present. A new standalone multimodal test compares Qwen2.5-VL 3B encoder outputs from the TRTLLM and FLASHINFER backends.

Changes

No-KV-cache metadata handling

Layer / File(s) Summary
Remove the metadata type restriction
tensorrt_llm/_torch/pyexecutor/engine/runners/no_kv_cache.py, tests/unittest/_torch/executor/engine/test_no_kv_cache.py
The runner no longer asserts that attention metadata uses either VanillaAttentionMetadata or TrtllmAttentionMetadata when no KV-cache manager is present. The test removes its monkeypatch of VanillaAttentionMetadata.

Multimodal encoder backend comparison

Layer / File(s) Summary
Compare encoder outputs across backends
tests/unittest/_torch/multimodal/test_mm_encoder_standalone.py
Adds a helper and test that encode Qwen2.5-VL 3B image batches with TRTLLM and FLASHINFER. The test checks output counts, matching shapes, and cosine similarity greater than 0.99.

Explanation

The title follows the repository template with an NVBugs ID and the [fix] type. It names the main change: the no-KV-cache runners can now use FlashInfer attention. The raw summary confirms the runner-side assertion removal that enables this, so the title matches the changeset.

Explanation

The description covers the problem, the root cause, the fix, and the test coverage. It names the new encoder test, the removed monkeypatch, and the H200 results. The template's Description and Test Coverage sections are present and filled in. The PR Checklist section is not addressed (no checkboxes ticked and no API-change label note), and the description omits the '@coderabbitai summary' line the template includes at the top. These are non-critical omissions, so the description is mostly complete.

Check embedding magnitude as well as direction.

The test name says that FLASHINFER matches TRTLLM, but the assertion checks only direction. A uniformly scaled FLASHINFER embedding can pass because cosine similarity is scale-invariant. These embeddings become inputs_embeds, so magnitude is part of the observable behavior. Add an elementwise or norm comparison with tolerances appropriate to the model dtype and attention backends.

Skip when the checkpoint or FlashInfer is unavailable.

The H100 selector provides the GPU CI target, but it does not check the Qwen2.5-VL checkpoint or the optional FlashInfer dependency. _QWEN_2_5_VL_3B_DIR is only a path, and _encode_images() passes it directly to MultimodalEncoder. A missing checkpoint or dependency can fail setup instead of skipping.

Approving — the comments below are optional touch-ups, not blockers.

FlashInfer's prepare() already has its own no-KV-cache branch: it asserts num_generations == 0 and plans the ragged prefill wrapper. Removing the runner-side type check therefore leaves validation to each backend, which matches how Vanilla and TRTLLM already work. The test_no_kv_cache.py change is useful: without the monkeypatch, the existing prepare_inputs tests now run with a metadata type that is neither Vanilla nor TRTLLM.

Gap: as far as I can tell, test_encoder_flashinfer_attention_matches_trtllm won't run in CI. The only test_mm_encoder_standalone.py entries in tests/integration/test_lists/test-db/ are -k-filtered selections in l0_b200.yml (lines 251 and 254), and neither one matches this test. Please add an entry (for example -k "test_encoder_flashinfer_attention_matches_trtllm" on a stage that already runs this file) so a regression would be caught. The inline comment has the details.

Untested by this PR: the pooling runner with FLASHINFER (it uses the same code path), and TP>1.

Two things would let this test catch a regression:

  1. CI registration: no test-db list selects this test (the l0_b200.yml entries for this file are -k "qwen3_30b_a3b_fp8" and -k "test_kv_event_mm_keys and uuid"). Please add an entry so it runs pre-merge.
  2. Silent fallback: if FlashInfer isn't importable, get_attention_backend (attention/backends/utils.py:56) logs a warning and returns TrtllmAttention. In that case this test compares TRTLLM against itself and passes. Add pytest.importorskip("flashinfer"), or assert that the encoder's attention metadata is FlashInferAttentionMetadata, so it can't pass without testing anything.
