Moving things
Things to backup and reinstall on the new computer:
-
C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\ModOrganizer
: the global instances are in there (if any), plus some other global settings - MO's installation folder (this folder includes the portable instance, if any)
- Any custom folders that were set in the Paths tab in the Settings, for all instances.
Mod Organizer always stores data in the registry (in HKCU/Software/Mod Organizer Team/Mod Organizer
), even for portable instances, but it does not need to be transferred. It just keeps track of the last opened instance, plus some options about tutorials, etc.
Before starting:
- Always make a backup of your profile. It is likely that Mod Organizer will reset both your mod and load orders when changing folders.
- Mod Organizer will not move files by itself. They have to be moved manually.
The paths to the various folders used by Mod Organizer can be changed in the Settings, in the Paths tab.
- Close MO2.
- Use Windows Explorer to copy the content of the old folder into the new location.
- Start Mod Organizer.
- Go in the Settings, Paths tab.
- Change the location of the folder that needs to be moved.
- Restore your mod and load orders if necessary.
- Delete the contents of the old folders.
- Exit Mod Organizer.
- Move or reinstall the game to a different folder.
- Run the game at least once.
- Start Mod Organizer.
- Change the game location setting:
- Since version 2.4, Mod Organizer should pick up the game's new location automatically.
- If it does not, a window will open asking for the game's folder.
- Confirm that the new path is correct in the Settings, Paths tab, in "Managed game" at the bottom. Change it manually if necessary.
- Mod Organizer will not change any of the paths to the various executables. Some may still point to the old location.
- In the list of executables next to the Run button, select "<Edit...>" to open the executables window.
- Go through all the executables in the list and fix their paths if necessary.
- The "broom" button can be used to reset the default executables.

Q: Do I need to have Mod Organizer and the game on the same drive?
A: No. -
Q: Does it matter which drive my mods are on?
A: Yes, for load times. Although Mod Organizer makes it look like the files come from the game'sData
folder, they're still physically on whatever drive themods
folder is on. The faster the drive, the faster the load times.
