The chatbot initially used base64 encoding to pass image data to Gradio, causing critical failures:
OSError: [Errno 63] File name too long: 'data:image/png;base64,iVBORw0KGgoAAAANSUhEUgAA...'
- Base64 String Length: Image grids generated extremely long base64 strings (>100KB)
- Gradio Limitations: Gradio Image component couldn't handle ultra-long data URLs
- File System Constraints: OS couldn't process such long "filenames"
- Memory Issues: Large strings caused memory bloat and performance degradation
- Severity: Critical (system completely unusable)
- User Impact: 100% of users unable to see search results
- Business Impact: Core functionality broken
- Time to Detection: Immediate (during testing)
- Immediate Fix: Replaced base64 with temporary file approach
- Code Changes:
# Before (broken) return f"data:image/png;base64,{img_str}" # After (working) temp_file = f"search_results_{hash(query) % 10000}.png" plt.savefig(temp_file, format='png', dpi=150, bbox_inches='tight') return temp_file
- Testing: Verified fix with multiple query types
- Documentation: Updated code comments and error handling
- Input Validation: Added file size and format checks
- Error Handling: Better exception handling for file operations
- Testing: Added integration tests for image display
- Monitoring: Added file operation logging
- Problem: Port 7860 already in use
- Fix: Implemented auto-port detection and fallback
- Prevention: Added port availability checking
- Problem:
type="tuples"deprecated in newer Gradio versions - Fix: Updated to
type="messages"format - Prevention: Regular dependency updates and compatibility checks
- Problem: Module import failures due to path issues
- Fix: Added
sys.path.append('.')for local imports - Prevention: Proper package structure and virtual environments
- Python 3.8+
