🚨 Postmortem Analysis

What Broke: Base64 Encoding Issues

Problem Description

The chatbot initially used base64 encoding to pass image data to Gradio, causing critical failures:

OSError: [Errno 63] File name too long: 'data:image/png;base64,iVBORw0KGgoAAAANSUhEUgAA...'

Root Cause Analysis

  1. Base64 String Length: Image grids generated extremely long base64 strings (>100KB)
  2. Gradio Limitations: Gradio Image component couldn't handle ultra-long data URLs
  3. File System Constraints: OS couldn't process such long "filenames"
  4. Memory Issues: Large strings caused memory bloat and performance degradation

Impact Assessment

  • Severity: Critical (system completely unusable)
  • User Impact: 100% of users unable to see search results
  • Business Impact: Core functionality broken
  • Time to Detection: Immediate (during testing)

Resolution Steps

  1. Immediate Fix: Replaced base64 with temporary file approach
  2. Code Changes:
    # Before (broken)
    return f"data:image/png;base64,{img_str}"

    # After (working)
    temp_file = f"search_results_{hash(query) % 10000}.png"
    plt.savefig(temp_file, format='png', dpi=150, bbox_inches='tight')
    return temp_file
  3. Testing: Verified fix with multiple query types
  4. Documentation: Updated code comments and error handling

Prevention Measures

  1. Input Validation: Added file size and format checks
  2. Error Handling: Better exception handling for file operations
  3. Testing: Added integration tests for image display
  4. Monitoring: Added file operation logging

Additional Issues & Fixes

1. Port Conflicts

  • Problem: Port 7860 already in use
  • Fix: Implemented auto-port detection and fallback
  • Prevention: Added port availability checking

2. Gradio Deprecation Warnings

  • Problem: type="tuples" deprecated in newer Gradio versions
  • Fix: Updated to type="messages" format
  • Prevention: Regular dependency updates and compatibility checks

3. Import Path Issues

  • Problem: Module import failures due to path issues
  • Fix: Added sys.path.append('.') for local imports
  • Prevention: Proper package structure and virtual environments
