Problem

  • After LibreOffice was uninstalled, Homebrew's leftover soffice wrapper still passed which soffice, then hung forever. Even invoicr --dry-run never returned.
  • When PDF conversion failed, invoicr still saved the invoice to history with a PDF path that did not exist, and bumped nextInvoiceNumber.

Change

  • New src/lib/pdf-converter.ts:
    • WordCraft first. Starts WordCraft with --control <free port>, waits for its per-port key file (ignoring stale ones), then runs file.open, file.exportPdf and file.close over its newline-delimited JSON channel ({key, id, method, params}).
    • Cleanup and errors. The WordCraft process is always stopped (SIGTERM, then SIGKILL after 5s). Spawn errors and early exits fail fast with a clear message, and the key never appears in errors.
    • LibreOffice fallback. Used only when soffice --version answers within 15s. Both soffice calls time out with SIGKILL.
  • convertToPdf / generateDocuments, the CLI (src/invoice.ts) and the API routes now all use this one path. isLibreOfficeAvailable and getLibreOfficeVersion are replaced by detectPdfConverter. /system still returns {available, version}, where version is now the converter name. The GUI label is updated to match.
  • src/invoice.ts: a failed PDF now exits 1 before history and numbering are touched.

Verification

  • npm run build is clean. npm test: 45 files, 821 passed, 6 skipped.
  • New tests run against a fake control server, so the real app is never launched. They check the exact request objects in order, error replies, spawn errors, an early exit, and that the child is stopped on success and on failure.
  • Mutation probes:
    • Renaming method to command fails 2 protocol tests.
    • Removing the child stop fails 2 tests.
  • End to end on macOS with WordCraft 0.7.0: convertDocxToPdf picked WordCraft, converted a real invoice DOCX, and the PDF text matched (number, line item, total). No WordCraft control instance was left running.
  • Two adversarial review passes; the second found nothing blocking.

Known gaps

  • The SIGKILL escalation in the child stop has no test.
  • The exit-before-history change in src/invoice.ts has no automated test, because there is no cheap harness for that file. I checked it by reading the code: process.exit(1) comes before saveToHistory and the number bump.
  • detectPdfConverter can block the API event loop for up to 15s when only LibreOffice is present. This is out of scope here.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • PDF generation can now use WordCraft or LibreOffice, with WordCraft preferred when available.
    • Invoice generation and system status now recognize either supported PDF converter.
  • Bug Fixes
    • PDF conversion errors are reported before invoice history or numbering is updated.

…ffice

A stale soffice wrapper left behind by an uninstalled LibreOffice cask
passed the `which soffice` check and then hung forever, even for
--dry-run. When conversion did fail, the CLI still wrote history with a
PDF path that did not exist and bumped the invoice number.

- New src/lib/pdf-converter.ts: prefer WordCraft, driven over its
  local --control channel (file.open, file.exportPdf, file.close);
use LibreOffice only if `soffice --version` answers within 15s.
soffice calls time out with SIGKILL; the WordCraft child is always
stopped and the control key never appears in errors.
- The CLI, generateDocuments and the API routes share this path.
- A failed PDF now exits 1 before history and numbering are touched.

📝 Walkthrough

The change adds WordCraft and LibreOffice detection and DOCX-to-PDF conversion. Document generation, invoice routes, system status, and invoice interfaces now use or describe the detected PDF converter.

Changes: PDF conversion

Layer / File(s) Summary
Detect and run PDF converters
src/lib/pdf-converter.ts, tests/lib-pdf-converter*.test.ts
The new converter selects WordCraft when its binary is available, otherwise probes LibreOffice. WordCraft conversion launches a control server, sends open, export, and close requests, and stops the child process. Tests cover control requests, conversion success, and error cases.
Use asynchronous conversion in document generation
src/lib/document-generator.ts, src/lib/index.ts, tests/lib-document-generator.test.ts
convertToPdf now delegates to convertDocxToPdf asynchronously, and generateDocuments awaits the result. The library exports the converter API instead of the LibreOffice availability and version helpers. Tests cover delegation and conversion failures.
Connect converter detection to invoice workflows
src/api/routes/invoices.ts, src/api/routes/system.ts, src/invoice.ts, gui/src/components/editors/*.tsx
Invoice routes use converter detection when deciding whether to generate PDFs, and system status reports the detected converter. Invoice generation awaits conversion. Interface notices name WordCraft and LibreOffice as converter options.

WordCraft conversion can fail to start despite a ready control server, and a test can stall on some hosts. Fix the readiness check before merging.

waitForWordCraft to treat key-file existence and canConnect(port) as readiness

argument and value.

Review comments at @tests/lib-document-generator.test.ts:
- Around line 201-203: Remove the type-only test in the detectPdfConverter
describe block, since it invokes a host-dependent converter probe; if retaining
coverage, replace it with branch tests that mock fs.existsSync and execFileSync.

…key file

On Linux the kernel stamps mtimes from a coarse clock that can trail Date.now(), so a fresh key file was rejected as stale and the wait ran to its 30s timeout.
