Why

FreeshardBase/sundial is a public repository with no licence file. Under default copyright that grants a reader no rights at all — not to run it, fork it, or redistribute it. That is a strictly weaker position than the licence shard_core already carries, and it is what every directory reviewer, journalist or prospective contributor sees when they click through from freeshard.net.

Found during the zero-budget marketing plan's licensing research (freeshard/marketing/research/1e-licensing.md §1.1 in the vault), which recommends fixing it unconditionally as the cheapest item in the whole report.

What

  • LICENSE.md — FSL-1.1-ALv2, byte-identical to FreeshardBase/freeshard's.
  • A short licence block at the end of README.md, naming the two facts the licence grants that we currently never state: self-hosting is explicitly permitted, and each release converts to Apache-2.0 on its own second anniversary.

Why this licence

FSL-1.1-ALv2 matches web-terminal, the component Sundial replaces. This records the terms that were always intended rather than choosing new ones, so there is no strategic decision buried in the diff.

Two things this deliberately does not touch: the shard_core relicensing question (a separate dated decision), and app-repository, which gets Apache-2.0 in its own PR because it protects no part of the hosting business.

Licence interpretation is a lawyer question; nothing here has had an Anwalt-Gegencheck.

The repository was public with no licence file, which under default
copyright grants a reader no rights at all — a weaker position for
anyone evaluating the project than the licence shard_core already
carries. FSL-1.1-ALv2 matches web-terminal, the component Sundial
replaces, so this records the intended terms rather than choosing
new ones.
