Summary

  • let workflow delete-node and delete-nodes accept the interior paths already emitted by workflow print
  • mint a path-scoped delete_node op and replay it inside the owning definition
  • remove incident definition links, scrub endpoint references, and refuse shared definitions atomically

Linear: https://linear.app/comfyorg/issue/PM-2138/agent-is-very-slow-and-gives-me-information-i-didnt-ask-for-when
Shared doc-host support: Comfy-Org/comfy-multi-player#289

Verification

  • uv run ruff check .
  • uv run ruff format --check .
  • uv run pytest -q tests/comfy_cli/command/test_connect_interior.py tests/comfy_cli/command/test_workflow_delete_nodes.py (29 passed)
  • full uv run pytest: 10,303 passed, 33 skipped; 62 failures in unrelated agent/build/deploy/run/output/file-mode suites in this worker environment

Delivery order

This producer change is safe to review independently. Cloud should pin it only after comfy-multi-player PR 289 is merged and released, then update the delete tool descriptions to advertise interior paths.

Hard landing gate: the published applier (comfy-multi-player 0.3.10) ignores path on delete_node. Replayed there, an interior delete such as 70/22 removes the same-id ROOT node 22 and root links whose ids collide with the interior removed_links, and still reports applied (reproduced against the npm 0.3.10 package). So this branch must not reach any doc host older than the release carrying PR 289: do not merge it, and do not let a Cloud comfy-cli pin move past it, until that release is published and pinned in the same change.

Gate status, 2026-10-21: met.

  • comfy-multi-player v0.3.12 (published 2026-10-21T03:25Z, npm 0.3.12) contains feat: apply interior node deletes comfy-multi-player#289. Its merge commit afa8d32 is an ancestor of tag commit f63f689.
  • Checked by running it. This branch mints delete-node 70/2012 on a workflow that also has a root node 2012, and the op is applied with the published packages. With 0.3.12, only the interior node and its link are removed, the same result the CLI produces itself. With 0.3.10 and 0.3.11, root node 2012 is removed instead, and the op still reports applied. So the floor is 0.3.12, not 0.3.11.
  • Cloud main already pins the doc host to 0.3.12 (Comfy-Org/cloud#14458). 0.3.11 is installed there only as the schema-v4 legacy reader, which reads and projects a document for /upgrade and never applies ops.

Still needed on the Cloud side: one change that moves Cloud's comfy-cli pin to a commit that includes this PR, and updates the delete tool descriptions to list interior paths. Do not ship that pin to any environment whose doc host runs a version below 0.3.12.

This PR covers only the interior-delete part of PM-2138. The slowness and the unrequested-information parts of that issue are not addressed here.

The delete commands now accept interior node paths. Interior deletion is limited to nodes in single-instance definitions. Replay removes the target node and scoped links, references, and ordering entries. Deleted paths become no-ops for later interior widget writes.

An interior delete-node removed the node's links from the definition but left
their ids in the definition's inputs[].linkIds / outputs[].linkIds, so the
boundary slot stayed connected to a link that no longer exists (the frontend's
SubgraphOutput.disconnect then dereferences the missing link). Scrub exactly
the dropped ids, matching comfy-multi-player#289's applier.

Also correct the skill and the interior-note hint, which still said
delete-node only reaches top-level nodes.

Independent review at 3e57b60d:

  • One topology bug fixed: interior delete left dead link ids on the subgraph's boundary slots. Fixed with a regression test.
  • Skill text and the interior-note hint still said delete-node is top-level only. Corrected.
  • Do not merge before comfy-multi-player Found no NVIDIA driver #289 is released. The published 0.3.10 applier would delete the wrong (root) node. See the gate in the description.
Full context for agent readers

Fixed in 3e57b60d

  1. _apply_interior_delete_node dropped the deleted node's links from definition.links and node slots, but not from definition.inputs[].linkIds / definition.outputs[].linkIds. A link from the input proxy (-10) or into the output proxy (-20) stayed listed, so the boundary slot read as connected. In the frontend, SubgraphSlotBase.isConnected is linkIds.length > 0, and SubgraphOutput.disconnect() calls link.resolve on the missing link and throws. The fix scrubs exactly the dropped ids, and leaves a surviving sibling link on the same boundary input alone. This matches comfy-multi-player Found no NVIDIA driver #289 at db9f9f8, where removeLinkInScope now scrubs the same arrays (I checked the projection against that head). New test: test_delete_interior_node_scrubs_its_links_from_the_boundary_slots. It fails on bd845d11 and passes on 3e57b60d, and it also checks that replaying the op gives the same boundary slots.
  2. comfy_cli/skills/comfy/SKILL.md said "add-node/connect/delete-node operate on top-level nodes only", which was false for connect before this PR and is now false for delete-node. NoteTextNotWritable's interior hint said "delete-node only removes top-level nodes". Both are reworded; the hint's conclusion (edit the note in the editor) still holds, because nothing can insert inside a subgraph. docs/op-vocabulary-v1.md now names the boundary scrub.

Verified, no change needed

  • Path parsing: 70/2012 and 70:2012 both mint path: ["70"]. Binding names from workflow print (70/<name>) resolve through _template_id. A missing interior node or missing host falls back to the existing node … not found error, with no write.
  • Batch atomicity: delete-nodes f 70/2012 70/9999 fails as batch failed: … and leaves the file byte-identical. A shared-definition refusal inside a batch takes the same path, because it raises ValueError in the loop.
  • Root-node preservation: when a root node 2012 and an interior 2012 both exist, deleting 70/2012 removes only the interior one.
  • Shared definitions are refused, with nothing written (existing test).
  • Presence: the CLI never applied LWW to top-level add/delete either, so leaving the interior path ungated is consistent. _write_target matches the shared applier's path-scoped ["node", path, id].

Not changed, noted

  • The CLI doesn't mint container_incarnation. Its other interior ops don't mint one either, so the doc host uses the legacy life-0 route.
  • Validation: ruff check and format are clean; test_connect_interior.py + test_workflow_delete_nodes.py give 30 passed; skills + workflow_edit give 253 passed. A wider -k workflow|subgraph|interior|note sweep has 3 failures in test_run.py/test_run_json.py (TestExecuteUiWorkflow, TestQueuedEventShape), and the same 3 fail without this change in this worker environment.

Address the cursor-review panel on 3e57b60:

- Refuse an interior delete of a node that backs a promoted widget (linked
promotion or legacy proxyWidgets). The host keeps that value positionally,
and neither this CLI nor the shared applier realigns it, so a delete would
silently shift later values onto the wrong inputs.
- An interior set_widget replayed after the node was deleted is now a no-op
(delete wins) instead of raising, so both arrival orders converge.
- Guard the interior delete replay against non-dict nodes and slots.

🟡 Minor · Track interior deletions separately from missing nodes. · workflow_ops.py:1362-1363

comfy_cli/workflow_ops.py:1362-1363
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Track interior deletions separately from missing nodes.

For a path such as ["70", "9999"], _navigate_subgraph_path raises because the final node is absent. _interior_path_deleted then treats every missing descendant under an existing definition as a deleted node. _apply_set_widget suppresses the error, and apply_op records the invalid operation as applied without changing the workflow.

Record scoped deletion state only when _apply_interior_delete_node actually removes the target node. Use that state for delete-wins replay. Re-raise the ValueError when no matching interior deletion exists. Do not let a phantom delete turn an invalid path into a pass.

🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Reject promoted-widget-source deletes during replay.

apply_op can replay a previously minted delete_node operation after the workflow changes. _apply_interior_delete_node checks only the path and instance count before deleting the target. It does not repeat the producer’s promoted-widget checks.

If the target becomes a promoted-widget source after the operation is minted, replay can delete it and shift positional host values onto the wrong inputs. Apply the same canonical and legacy promotion checks before mutating the definition.

CodeRabbit outside-diff Minor, _interior_path_deleted (missing interior node treated as deleted): no change.

  • Matches top-level replay. A set_widget whose top-level node is missing is already a delete-wins no-op.
  • A never-valid interior path is refused at mint time.
  • Telling "deleted" apart from "never existed" would need tombstones in the workflow file, which the CLI does not keep for top-level deletes either.
Full context for agent readers
  • In _apply_set_widget on this head, the non-path branch does node = _find_by_str(workflow, op["node_id"]); if node is None: return # target concurrently deleted => no-op (delete wins). It has no record of whether the node ever existed. The interior branch now treats a missing leaf under an existing definition the same way. It still raises when an intermediate segment is not a subgraph or a definition is missing.
  • An authored op cannot target a node that does not exist. set_widget resolves the path with _navigate_subgraph_path before minting, so ["70", "9999"] reaches replay only in a hand-edited or foreign op stream.
  • Cloud's canonical order and outcome come from the doc host's applier (comfy-multi-player), which keeps stamped presence registers. Local CLI replay is not the authority for that case. Adding scoped deletion records to the workflow JSON would be a new persistent state surface that no other delete path uses.
  • If maintainers want the stricter behavior, a follow-up should apply it to top-level and interior replay together, so the two paths stay consistent.
