Windows ARM64 Desktop environments currently omit OpenCV, leaving custom nodes that import cv2 unable to run. They also still download custom blake3/kornia-rs wheels even though upstream now publishes native wheels.

This builds opencv-contrib-python 4.14.0 (the main modules plus contrib) from the pinned public Windows-on-ARM source commit c9cce3de2eae2039ebb0c22d13c9ed85a40e338f, smoke-tests the resulting wheel on native Windows ARM64/Python 3.13, and installs it with the full standalone requirements. Empty opencv-python, opencv-python-headless and opencv-contrib-python-headless wheels at the same version depend on it, so custom nodes that require any OpenCV distribution name resolve to this build instead of PyPI, which has no Windows ARM64 wheel for any of them. The local builder uses the same recipe in a separate build venv. blake3 1.0.11 and kornia-rs 0.1.15 now resolve as binary-only PyPI dependencies. Historical v1 release assets remain available for old environment definitions.

OpenCV's wheel is built from public sources, not copied from the evaluation archive. No new public wheel release or hard-coded unpublished download URL is needed. The native workflow uploads only a CI artifact; environment publication remains a separate release action.

Validation:

  • Local Python unit suite: 74 passed.
  • Python compilation, workflow YAML parsing, and git diff --check: passed.
  • Native Windows ARM64 CI passed on ca85d06d699eb00d1ef3bfb2ec1039a18c505514: public-source OpenCV build, clean-venv binary installation, native imports, known BLAKE3 digest, color conversion, and lossless PNG round-trip. Python 3.13.16, MSVC 19.51 ARM64, NumPy 2.5.4; the stripped bundle repeats the same smoke checks when built. The wheel artifact was uploaded successfully.
  • Cross-platform resolution against ComfyUI v0.42.1 plus Manager: 101 distributions resolve for CPython 3.13 / Windows ARM64 with source builds disabled, including all NVIDIA pins. This preflight used the evaluation wheel's metadata locally; native CI independently built and tested the distributable wheel from the same pinned public source/version. Artifact download returned HTTP 403 in this environment, so I could not repeat the local resolver check against the newly built wheel bytes.
  • actionlint passes for the native-wheel and tooling workflows. The main environment workflow retains two existing matrix.python_version warnings, reproduced unchanged on main.

Limits: no FFmpeg video backend. Full standalone dependency resolution and RTX Spark custom-node/GPU QA remain release gates. This affects newly built environments, not already installed environments. Environment releases restore the smoke-tested OpenCV wheel from the Actions cache, or build it inside the ARM64 leg when the cache is empty, so the other platform builds never wait for it. Its build tools are not packaged.

📝 Walkthrough

Windows ARM64 builds now build or restore a pinned OpenCV wheel, install it with native dependencies, and run a dedicated smoke test. Local tooling and CI workflows were updated to use and validate this path.

Changes: Windows ARM64 Native Dependencies

Layer / File(s) Summary
Pinned OpenCV wheel build
requirements-nvidia-arm64.txt, scripts/build_opencv_arm64.py
The ARM64 requirements pin native dependency wheels and a custom OpenCV wheel. The new script builds the OpenCV wheel from pinned sources and validates its platform tag.
Local ARM64 installation and validation
scripts/build_local.py, scripts/smoke_win_arm64.py, scripts/test_local_tooling.py, win-arm64-wheels.sha256
Local ARM64 setup builds and installs the OpenCV wheel with consolidated requirements, replacing the hosted-wheel download and checksum path. The dedicated smoke test checks dependencies, architecture, hashing, and image round-tripping. Tooling tests cover installation, wheel selection, and host validation.
CI wheel build and standalone integration
.github/workflows/build-win-arm64-wheels.yml, .github/workflows/build-standalone-env.yml, .github/workflows/test-local-tooling.yml, scripts/test_local_tooling.py
The wheel workflow restores or builds, smoke-tests, and uploads the OpenCV wheel. The standalone workflow restores or builds the wheel for ARM64, installs it with the requirements, and runs the smoke test. Path filters and workflow checks cover the updated build paths.

Priority: ⬇️ Low

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to eb366

This change builds a pinned OpenCV wheel for Windows ARM64 and moves local and CI installation onto it. The only open point is a small test-strength improvement, so no merge-blocking risk remains.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to eb366

Fixed source revisions, architecture checks, and validation before publication constrain exposure. Risk remains low rather than minimal because the change replaces explicit checksums with external package trust and introduces binary reuse whose guarantees were not independently verified.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — A compromised native dependency could execute on ARM64 build/test runners and in downstream ARM64 environments. The standalone release job retains pre-existing repository write authority. Non-ARM64 installation paths do not consume the new OpenCV wheel.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Workflow calls supply literal build paths, while source acquisition uses a fixed HTTPS repository and full commit rather than a user-selected remote or revision. The PR-triggered wheel workflow has read-only repository permission and disables persisted checkout credentials. Its virtual environment isolates dependencies, not execution authority.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The producer and consumer use the same builder-hash cache key without restore-key fallbacks. Release installation and smoke validation still run on cache hits. This detects incompatible reused output before publication, but does not authenticate a malicious wheel before installation or import.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — If byte-level dependency identity is required, record and verify approved wheel digests or provenance before installation, covering both reused OpenCV output and the replacement upstream Rust wheels. This would complement source pinning and behavioral smoke tests rather than treating them as authenticity controls.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win

Check that the installed OpenCV distribution is the pinned custom wheel.

cv2.__version__ reports the OpenCV core version only. Any cv2 provider with core 4.14.0 passes this check. That includes opencv-python-headless or a different source build. The script already checks distribution metadata for blake3 and kornia-rs. Check opencv-python the same way, so the smoke test confirms the wheel from OPENCV_REF. Also check that no other OpenCV distribution is present, because a second distribution overwrites the cv2 package. Without these checks, a different cv2 can pass the test.

Check the OpenCV version as well as the commit suffix.

This test accepts opencv-python==4.15.0+c9cce3d, although the pinned build produces a 4.14.0 wheel. A version-only pin change could therefore pass the test and fail during installation. Assert the complete expected pin, including 4.14.0, so the test detects both kinds of drift.
