What does this PR do?

Completes the remaining Wave 2 shared components, runtime config layering, and documentation for #1065 and #1066:

  • Shared SeedOmni TextEncoder module (veomni/models/seed_omni/modules/text_encoder/):
    • TextEncoder (ShardedEmbedding lookup, tied/untied decode head), TextEncoderAccelerated (per-instance VeomniOp cross-entropy selection, sample-boundary label masking, unsupervised-row filtering, clamped zero-count denominator), TextEncoderChatTemplate, TextEncoderPreprocessor, and parallel_plan.py.
  • 4-layer per-module argument resolution & per-module ops persistence:
    • build_omni_module_runtime_args merges four layers (global_args < checkpoint_modules < inference_default < modules YAML), with _deep_update treating empty mappings ({}) as no-op merges rather than erasures.
    • OmniModuleRuntimeArguments.to_hf_config() persists ops_implementation into OmniConfig._module_entries, and ModuleRuntime._build_model resolves ops_implementation from the merged self.module_config.ops_implementation.
  • Shared utilities (veomni/utils/):
    • veomni/utils/tensor_utils.py: naflatten and unflatten with host-side shape metadata.
    • veomni/utils/save_safetensor_utils.py: _revert_model_weight_conversions_for_hf (unwrapping DDP wrappers and walking the FSDP2 MRO to recover registered weight conversions).
    • veomni/utils/device.py, veomni/utils/helper.py: guard empty_cache() when the active device has no cache API and avoid division by zero in MultiSourceInfoTracker.
  • Docs & agent guidance: sync docs/seed_omni/design/architecture.md, docs/seed_omni/usage/adding_a_model.md, docs/key_features/sharded_embedding.md, and .agents/skills/veomni-seed-omni/references/module-contract.md.

Closes #1065, closes #1066.

Checklist Before Starting

Test

Added and extended CI-enumerated tests:

  • tests/seed_omni/ (run wholesale in scripts/ci/accelerator/suites/{gpu,npu}.json):
    • tests/seed_omni/modules/test_text_encoder.py (new): TextEncoder save/reload, decode loss/logits and unshifted/masked label parity against native TextEncoder.decode, decode_pre boundary masking, pre-shifted loss dispatch, tied-head eager loss, all-masked zero loss, per-instance VeomniOp selection, pad_token_id forwarding, and tied-head projection through ShardedEmbedding.
    • tests/seed_omni/mixins/test_training_module_mixin.py: verifies every registered class in OMNI_ACCELERATED_MODEL_REGISTRY subclasses TrainingModuleMixin.
    • tests/seed_omni/arguments/{test_config_merge,test_module_args,test_accelerator_args}.py: _deep_update empty-mapping semantics and 4-layer checkpoint/inference/YAML module argument resolution.
    • tests/seed_omni/runtime/test_graph_runtime.py (new), tests/seed_omni/model/test_convert_model.py: execute_train_node / execute_generation_node / GraphProfileCallback and load_family_graphs / attach_module_assets.
  • tests/utils/test_save_safetensor_utils.py (wired into scripts/ci/accelerator/suites/{gpu,npu}.json): DDP unwrap in _revert_model_weight_conversions_for_hf and naflatten/unflatten CPU shape roundtrip.

Verified with pytest, make quality, check_doc_task_paths.py, check_agent_doc_paths.py, and sphinx-build -W -b html docs.

API and Usage Example

See docs/seed_omni/design/architecture.md and docs/seed_omni/usage/adding_a_model.md.

Design & Code Changes

  • veomni/models/seed_omni/modules/text_encoder/: shared TextEncoder module.
  • veomni/arguments/{omni_arguments_types,arguments_types,parser}.py, veomni/models/seed_omni/{modules/module_configuration_base.py,accelerated/omni_module/*}: 4-layer module config resolution and persisted ops_implementation.
  • veomni/utils/{tensor_utils,save_safetensor_utils,device,helper}.py: naflatten/unflatten, MRO weight-conversion revert on HF export, and empty_cache() guard.

Checklist Before Submitting

  • Read the Contribute Guide
  • Applied pre-commit checks
  • Added/updated documentation
  • If tasks/ training scripts were moved or renamed: updated docs/ examples and verified python3 scripts/ci/docs/check_doc_task_paths.py passes (also enforced by the Check doc task paths CI workflow)
  • Tests: extended an existing CI-enumerated test, or added a new test and wired it into scripts/ci/accelerator/suites/{gpu,npu}.json (where applicable), or explained in Test why none is needed. See .agents/knowledge/testing.md.

Suggested reviewers: foolplayer

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 70d9e

No actionable issue remains from the supplied review. The change is mergeable after normal checks.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 653c0

The inspected loading changes preserve existing authority and reduce shared configuration state. The main remaining design risk is caller-managed inference-state isolation and recovery. No exploitable security regression was established, but coverage is incomplete.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • observed — Checkpoint module paths can resolve outside the checkpoint root through absolute paths. This filesystem authority predates the PR; the inspected loader delta does not expand it or add checkpoint-directed arbitrary imports. Loading still operates with the launching process's authority.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Caller-selected module paths remain a trusted loading input rather than a sandboxed resource selector. Registry-based class selection and the existing source-view path-consistency check remain in the changed loader; removing global ops mutation reduces cross-module configuration coupling.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — The cache helper requires exclusive ownership and reset before switching conversations or recovering from an interrupted step. Its implementation does not enforce those conditions. No concrete cross-request disclosure was established: the inspected helper has an explicit single-cache contract, while the established sequential inference path performs the required reset.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Before integrating the cache helper into shared or concurrent request execution, bind cached state to an explicit request owner, enforce exclusive use, and define reset-on-failure behavior so interrupted cache and conversation updates cannot be reused accidentally.

Explanation

The changes remain connected to [#1065] or [#1066]. Runtime layering, module parallelism, checkpoint utilities, text-encoder and packing modules, tests, distributed documentation, and agent guidance support the linked objectives. No unrelated change is demonstrated.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title accurately identifies the main changes: SeedOmni TextEncoder support, runtime configuration layering, and shared helpers. The scope tags add noise but do not make the title unclear or unrelated.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

The PR implements relevant parts of [#1065] and [#1066]. The active requirements are not complete. For [#1065], scripts/seed_omni/ contains only convert_model.py; export_omni_checkpoint.py is absent. The required veomni/ops/kernels/embed/ and veomni/ops/kernels/cross_entropy/__init__.py paths are also absent. The PR description does not establish the required make patchgen, pytest tests/ops/ tests/lora/, or checkpoint round-trip results. For [#1066], the reviewed tree has selected SeedOmni documentation and the veomni-seed-omni skill, but it does not contain the issue-specified seedomni-v2 skill layout or several required design, migration, index, and graph artifacts.

Resolution

For [#1065], include export_omni_checkpoint.py, the required embedding and clamped cross-entropy implementations, checkpoint round-trip coverage through OmniConfig.from_pretrained(), and evidence that make patchgen and pytest tests/ops/ tests/lora/ pass. For [#1066], add the specified SeedOmni V2 documentation, graph and index artifacts, and .agents/skills/seedomni-v2/ layout, or update the active issue requirements before claiming completion.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 44.74% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff. Analyzed 228 functions across 42 files. (4 skipped: 4 unsupported.)

Resolution

Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.

[P2] When cross_entropy_loss_implementation is omitted, ModuleRuntime drops its None value and this fallback forces eager CE instead of the GPU/NPU default. Untied, bias-free heads then allocate full token-by-vocabulary logits, which can exhaust memory on long sequences. Pass None to VeomniOp for a missing selection so the registry selects the hardware default.

Fixed in ed4fe07: removed the "eager" fallback in self.config.ops_implementation.get("cross_entropy_loss_implementation") so omitting cross_entropy_loss_implementation passes None to VeomniOp("cross_entropy_loss", "standard", ce_impl) and resolves to the platform default (liger_kernel on GPU, chunk_loss on NPU), with unit coverage added in tests/seed_omni/modules/base/test_modules_mixin.py.

[P2] Verified fixed in 653c021: an omitted cross_entropy_loss_implementation now passes None to VeomniOp, restoring the platform default. The new test also checks this selection while retaining explicit eager and chunk_loss coverage.

264-297: 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win

Add a production-path assertion for the selected CE operator.

This test checks only veomni_ce.impl during construction. It does not call TextEncoderAccelerated.decode, so a regression could preserve the selected implementation while bypassing it during loss computation. Add one decode assertion with an untied, bias-free head and supervised labels. The assertion must verify that the resolved default or chunk_loss operator is invoked.

…rs and tests

Complete the remaining SeedOmni data pipeline items, documentation, and unit
tests for #1063:

- veomni/models/seed_omni/modules/module_processing_base.py: add
  ModulePreprocessorBase.preprocess_conversations and append_batch_anchor (one
  FSDP anchor row per micro-batch when a modality is absent).
- docs/seed_omni/mixins/module_preprocessor.md, docs/index.md,
  docs/seed_omni/design/architecture.md,
  .agents/skills/veomni-seed-omni/references/data-flow.md: document the
  ModulePreprocessorBase extension point and call flow.
- veomni/models/seed_omni/utils/__init__.py: re-export ConversationItem and the
  carrier selection/merge/seal helpers alongside the convert registry.
- veomni/data/multimodal/image_utils.py: check HTTP status / local path
  existence in load_image_from_path and round float pixels before uint8 cast in
  save_image_tensors_to_file.
- veomni/data/dataset.py: forward source_name to each child dataset in
  build_weighted_multisource_dataset when names are configured.
- tests/seed_omni/data/{test_audio_ingestion,test_img_tag,test_preprocessor}.py,
  tests/seed_omni/model/test_conversation.py, tests/data/utils.py: add unit
  coverage for audio ingestion/saving, _img_tag sequential pairing and ref
  deduping, SeedOmniCollator mixed-resolution / batch-anchor handling, and
  conversation carrier helpers.
… anchors

- docs/seed_omni/design/architecture.md: describe ModulePreprocessorBase as a
  separate picklable CPU worker class referenced via preprocessor_class and run
  by OmniProcessor in DataLoader workers, rather than an accelerated-class
  mixin.
- docs/seed_omni/mixins/module_preprocessor.md: update line anchors for
  process_seedomni_example, ConversationItem, and test_preprocessor.py.
… base modules, runtime config layering and shared helpers

Complete the remaining Wave 2 shared components and documentation for #1065 and #1066:

- veomni/models/seed_omni/modules/base/: add the shared TextEncoder
  (ShardedEmbedding lookup, tied/untied decode head, per-instance VeomniOp
  cross-entropy selection, chat template, preprocessor, parallel plan) and
  AR LLM / multimodal packing helpers (llm_packing.py, packing.py).
- veomni/arguments/omni_arguments_types.py, veomni/arguments/parser.py,
  veomni/models/seed_omni/accelerated/omni_module/:
  - 4-layer per-module argument resolution (global model block < checkpoint
    _module_entries < inference eager default < launcher modules YAML), with
    empty mappings treated as no-op merges in _deep_update;
  - persist per-module ops_implementation in OmniConfig._module_entries and
    apply module ops in both wrapped and eager inference builds without relying
    on the process-global ops singleton;
  - support per-module SP, CP, and hybrid CP*SP configurations validated by
    _validate_omni_dp_size;
  - invoke module.configure_optimizer(optimizer) in ModuleRuntime._build_optimizer
    when defined.
- veomni/utils/tensor_utils.py, veomni/utils/save_safetensor_utils.py,
  veomni/checkpoint/dcp_consolidation.py, veomni/utils/device.py:
  - add naflatten / unflatten with host-side shape metadata;
  - revert class-level weight conversions across the FSDP2 MRO on HF export;
  - support F8_E8M0 block scales in DCP safetensors consolidation;
  - guard empty_cache() when the active device has no cache API.
- docs/seed_omni/distributed/, .agents/skills/veomni-seed-omni/,
  .agents/knowledge/: sync per-module SP/CP documentation and constraints.
- tests/: add unit coverage under tests/seed_omni/{modules/base,arguments,runtime,trainer,model},
  tests/parallel/, and tests/utils/test_save_safetensor_utils.py (wired into GPU
  and NPU unit workflows).
…xtEncoderPreprocessor

- TextEncoderPreprocessor.__init__: accept and ignore extra **kwargs so
  from_pretrained can forward processor_config kwargs to subclasses (e.g.
  packed_preprocess) without raising TypeError on the base class.
- docs/seed_omni/distributed/sequence_parallel.md,
  .agents/skills/veomni-seed-omni/references/per-module-parallel.md:
  - note that top-level model.accelerator must also resolve to the shared
    dp_size in the per-module SP/CP example;
  - distinguish local module intermediate activations (~1/S) from the
    full-sequence output materialized by gather_outputs in post_forward;
  - separate item-aligned batch slicing from token-level Ulysses sequence
    slicing in section 5;
  - clarify that get_ulysses_sequence_parallel_group() applies to Ulysses
    modules while CP-enabled modules read get_context_parallel_group().
…erence preprocessor path

- TextEncoderAccelerated.__init__: pass None to VeomniOp("cross_entropy_loss",
  "standard", ce_impl) when cross_entropy_loss_implementation is omitted so the
  op registry selects the active platform's default kernel (liger_kernel on GPU,
  chunk_loss on NPU) instead of forcing eager CE.
- docs/seed_omni/design/architecture.md: clarify that OmniProcessor runs
  ModulePreprocessorBase in DataLoader workers during training and once per
  request with inference=True before the generation FSM during inference.

📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Update the intro: it still says the job shares one SP size.

Line 7 says the job shares "one sequence parallel (SP) size". Lines 49-56 now say that modules share dp_size. Under that rule, each module chooses its own split of sp_size = cp_size * ulysses_size. The two statements contradict each other. The path instructions require flagging stale parallelism guidance.

bypassing module isolation. Keep the guidance consistent with use_parallel_state
and ModuleRuntime._recompute_context, and ensure agents do not rely on ambient
global ParallelState.

Review comments at @docs/seed_omni/distributed/sequence_parallel.md:
- Around line 137-141: Update the Loss section describing
reduce_sequence_parallel_loss to state that, after SP slicing, sequence-sliced
ranks contribute different shard-local ce_sum and n_valid values and the
reduction combines their numerators and denominators. Limit the replicated-copy
cancellation statement to unsliced full-replica paths.
- Around line 3-10: Update the sequence-parallel documentation’s data-flow
example and agent reference to describe attention using “the configured
attention collective” rather than claiming an in-group all-to-all for every
module with sp_size greater than one. Preserve the distinction that CP-only
modules use the scoped CP group while hybrid/Ulysses modules use their
configured collective.

Review comments at @veomni/models/auto.py:

ModuleRuntime-scoped SeedOmni builds so documented module types such as
text_encoder can use context parallelism or supported hybrid layouts without
being rejected by the generic model-type allowlist. Bypass or extend the gate
through the existing build path, while preserving the check that rejects
unsupported CP plus Ulysses combinations.

Review comments at @veomni/utils/tensor_utils.py:

…refine SP/CP docs

- veomni/models/auto.py: allow SeedOmni module configs (OmniModuleConfig) in
  check_context_parallel_supported while preserving the NPU guard and the
  combined CP+Ulysses check when an inner config matches
  CONTEXT_PARALLEL_MODEL_TYPES.
- veomni/utils/tensor_utils.py: pass device="cpu" explicitly when constructing
  shape metadata rows in naflatten so an active non-CPU default device does not
  place shape metadata on device.

    per_module_parallelism.md intro;
  - align Config Ownership with per-module ParallelState registration and
    scoping;
  - use "configured SP/CP collective" in the data-flow pseudocode and describe
    both sequence-sliced shard-local and unsliced full-replica decode loss
    reductions.

[P2] Global sdpa/veomni_sdpa or veomni_flex_attention selections reach this attention-free module, but TextEncoder inherits false SDPA/Flex capability flags. Transformers 5.16.1 therefore raises in super().__init__, preventing training or inference from starting. Handle these irrelevant attention selections locally in TextEncoder and add an explicit-backend construction test.

TextEncoder itself has no attention layers; this check is triggered only because build_foundation_model currently forwards ops_implementation.attn_implementation into PreTrainedModel._from_config (which sets HF's config._attn_implementation). We are decoupling VeOmni's ops_config.attn_implementation from HF's config._attn_implementation in a follow-up PR so attention-free omni modules will not go through HF's _check_and_adjust_attn_implementation gate.

[P2] This unconditional emb plan blocks a DDP text encoder inheriting a backbone's ep>1, even with emb=1: the DDP guard rejects any nonempty plan when any extra-parallel dimension is enabled. Check the intersection of active dimensions and module plans so an inactive embedding plan does not reject this configuration.

[P2] An all-masked span projects every row into [T, V] logits, even with fused CE configured. Long prompt-only spans can therefore OOM while supervised spans use the fused path. Use empty or minimal zero-gradient anchor rows here while preserving the required FSDP/embedding collectives.
